[20] Official Records

A spell of bad weather had struck so there weren't any Quidditch lessons for me to organize that month. Professor Dumbledore told me I could take some time off and visit my family if I wanted to. He also knew Remus and Tonks' wedding was coming up, so he mentioned that I could take a leave and attend the event.

That was very generous of him and I thanked him for the consideration. I had yet to decide whether or not to take a leave but when I received a letter from Percy telling me that he had something important to discuss, I eventually gave in.

It seemed he had found out about the Everharts like I asked him to. It was confidential and I couldn't possibly discuss everything with him at Hogsmeade or the Leaky Cauldron. So it would be better for me to take that leave and go to his apartment.

Therefore, I let the Headmaster know that I would take a week's leave as Rem and Tonks' wedding was on the weekend. I had to return to Hogwarts after that.

So I packed my bags and told Ginny I would go home for a week.

I was welcomed very warmly at the Burrow like always. Mum was delighted to see me and so were Fred and George. I waited till evening then told them I had dinner plans with Percy so after convincing the twins that I was not fighting again with our Headboy brother, I finally left to go to Perce's apartment in London.

I knew he would have returned from his job at the Ministry by then so I rang the doorbell, waiting for him to open up. A short while later, the door shifted, revealing Percy in his hand-knit cardigan and thick spectacles.

"Straight up showed to my door without warning?" He smiled, stepping aside to let me in, "I had almost forgotten how persistent you can be when it comes to getting something done."

"Well, I just had to remind you so that you don't forget about me too soon," I remarked, watching him close the door and secure it from any intruders, "How are you though?"

"The usual, swamped in work at the Ministry and very tired," he replied, going to the kitchen while I followed behind him, "Tea or coffee?"

"Whichever's easiest. No wait, you sit down, I will brew tea for both of us."

He didn't object to the offer so I fetched the cups from the cabinet as well as the kettle to make tea for us. In the meanwhile, he had brought over his briefcase that I assumed contained information on the Everharts.

"Kat, how much do you trust me?" He asked all of a sudden and I paused, not expecting that question.

However, the reply was ready on my tongue, "Enough to know that you will always be here for me."

"Good. Because finding all of this wasn't easy and I've put myself in trouble for you," he remarked and though it may seem he was emphasizing how effortful that task had been for him, I caught the solemn look in his eyes, hinting there was more to it than what met the eye. "I also have a lot of questions about everything and I will need answers from you."

"Of course, I will try and answer all that I know."

"Promise me," his hazel eyes were focused in an unwavering look, "Because last time when you told me about your visions, you didn't tell me everything."

Oh, dear... He caught onto it, probably. That means I would have to tell him about the Malfoys and all I know about the link between them and myself so far.

"I promise," I agreed, mixing the sugar in our cups as I poured the tea, "I will tell you everything but you also have to swear that it will remain our secret. You won't say a word to anyone else."

"I swear I won't tell it to anyone else."

I took my seat across from him and watched him open the bag at last. He took out a file from it which was the official record file on the Everhart bloodline.

I knew he had his ways but for him to go that deep and fetch out the official records was something I hadn't expected.

Noticing my surprise and awe, he remarked, "Told you it was quite some trouble to get my hands on this but there was no other way I could have found out all you wanted me to. Like I said, the Everharts are a secretive lot."

"Perce... This is brilliant, thank you so much."

His expression softened, seeing that I was satisfied with his effort, "You're welcome. You guys somehow always underestimate me."

"No, not anymore. You're the best."

He chuckled, dismissing my flattering attempts, "Alright, look at this. You were right about there being an Evelyn Everhart. The last known members of the family were twins; Evelyn and Evander."

He showed me the file which contained all the records of known Everhart members. Professor Trelawney had said they were a family known for having a Seer lineage and I could see that was true as it was often mentioned in the data of the Everhart witches.

The last pages of the file were what caught my attention. First was Evander Everhart's profile then was the woman I had seen in my vision; Evelyn Everhart.

"What happened to them and where are they now?"

"Evelyn, as you can see here died years ago," Perce pointed to a paragraph on her profile, "She was being treated in St. Mungo's and was presumably driven to madness due to her visions. She died during treatment in 1982."

"And what about Evander?"

"No one knows," he shrugged, "he disappeared soon after his sister's death. And there's no record yet of whether he's alive or not."

Strange...

He could be alive and if he was, then he would know what happened to Evelyn. Why was Narcissa asking forgiveness from her and if I really was her daughter, why did she leave me with the Malfoys?

"That's all you could find?" I asked, reading the profiles but finding nothing that could answer my questions.

Perce looked rather solemn as he shook his head, "No, there's more."

"Oh... What is it?"

"I have a colleague who went to Hogwarts and was in the same batch as the Everhart twins," he told me and I leaned closer to listen, knowing it was something very important, "he told me that Evelyn was a Ravenclaw but she was best friends with Narcissa Malfoy as they were often seen together."

I see...

"But the strange thing is that he said there was quite a scandal in school regarding Evelyn and Lucius Malfoy," he mumbled, telling me everything just the way he had heard, "and if what he told me was true, then there might be an explanation why you look exactly like Evelyn but had blonde hair."

Percy caught onto everything very quickly. There was no use in hiding the truth from him now and he had dug out the answers to so many of my questions too.

"You might be a Malfoy, Kat," he concluded, looking at me with that serious expression, "and you might be Evelyn's daughter."

I took in a deep breath and nodded, not saying anything just yet.

"You don't seem too shocked to hear that," Percy remarked, raising an eyebrow skeptically.

"Well, that's because I knew half of the truth already," I replied, "I knew I was related to the Malfoys but how exactly, that you've uncovered just now."

Now it was his turn to get shocked.

"How long have you known?" He asked when he recovered from the shock, his mind working on deducing everything as usual.

"From Christmas Break. I have proof too that I will show you once we go back home. But you have to promise me you won't tell anyone else about it."

He knew why I was asking to keep it confidential so he didn't refuse, "I promise."

An unnerving silence gripped us after that and I reluctantly put forward the question that was eating away at my heart, "One last thing, Perce... This doesn't change anything between us, right? Whether I am a Malfoy or not, it doesn't change that I consider you all my family..."

I wanted to know exactly what he thought about it and I didn't want him to hate me just because I was a Malfoy.

Much to my relief, his features softened into that caring elder brotherly look I had always adored and pulled me close in a one-armed hug, "Of course, Kat. This changes nothing. You're our sister and no matter what the truth is behind your ancestry, you will always be family to us."
