[17] Trip To Diagon Alley
It was a change to come to Diagon Alley instead of Hogsmeade. The winter village as many people called it, Hogsmeade was very snowy even up to late March. On the contrary, the streets in Diagon Alley were clean and there was no sign of snow anywhere.
A calm breeze blew as I walked through the cobblestoned pathway, going to Gringotts where I was supposed to meet with Percy.
No, we were not going to talk while we were at Gringotts. He had said he had some task to take care of at the bank, so I should wait for him outside, and he would join me when he got free.
By the time I reached Gringotts, the influx of people had started to increase, giving the street that bustling quality it was quite known for. Shortly after in the crowd, I spotted a glimpse of red hair and a dark green sweater that could belong to none other than Perce.
I smiled seeing him approach and when he came to stand in front of me, I caught a faint smile on his face too.
"I hope you didn't have to wait much longer," he spoke up, adjusting his wide spectacles on the bridge of his nose, "people are flooding into Gringotts, it took me quite a while to get out."
"I saw. And no, I wasn't waiting long," I reassured him as we started to walk back toward the Leaky Cauldron, "so how are you?"
"Good, you?"
"I'm good too," I nodded but he seemed to have caught onto my lie. So before he could ask, I gave in, "Maybe not very good but if you're able to help me out, then maybe things will get better."
"Ah of course. Explains why you would suddenly feel the need to see your good old Headboy brother. You wanted a favor from me," he remarked and for a second it felt as if he had gotten offended. but the teasing glint in his eyes said otherwise; he was only saying that to annoy me.
"Oh come on..."
"I'm always right," he held his head up high, hands in his pockets and he looked quite a funny sight right then that I couldn't help but laugh.
"Watch where you're going, Perce," I added, remembering that he would often bump into stuff on the way at school whenever he was giving us his characteristic Prefect sermons.
The Leaky Cauldron was full save from a few seats in the corner which was a good thing because with a Muffliato charm, we would have enough privacy and no one would care to suspect that we were discussing something important either. Besides everyone at the Leaky Cauldron was already very caught up in their own lives, the people there hardly looked around to see what was happening for them to pay attention to us.
"Now tell me, what do you want?" Percy asked as we settled down into our seats and I erected the Muffliato charm.
"I am having visions again," I decided to start from there because, for some reason, Perce too had always been interested in my ability to glimpse the future. "And I thought the best person to reach out would be you."
"That... That's very touching, yes, but I know you too well, Katerina," his eyes were focused on me and I couldn't escape even by making an excuse. "I feel like you want more than just a listening ear."
"Yes, well, I do want your help in finding out the identity of a person I am seeing constantly in my visions," I decided it was better to get to the point before anything interrupted us, "since you work at the Ministry, you could definitely do that, right?"
He didn't reply immediately as if considering my offer. then he finally spoke up, "Depends. First, tell me what vision it is and who's this person you want to know about."
Now that was a problem. I couldn't tell him about the Malfoys and everything that Draco told me and without that context, recounting my vision would make no sense. So I had to think of an alternative.
"There's this woman I have been seeing constantly for the past few weeks," I began omitting the parts that could link to the Malfoys, "her name is Evelyn because I heard someone call her that. And I think she is a Seer too because she has what Professor Trelawney describes as Seer's eyes."
He was listening very attentively as he took out a small notebook and portable quill from his pocket and began noting down, "Evelyn, green eyes, Seer, what else?"
"And she had dark hair," I tried to recall from memory, "and she looked... Well, she looked exactly like me."
He paused as if not expecting to hear that, "exactly?"
"Exactly. It was so creepy like I was looking into a mirror."
He thought about it, then noted down the words black hair, looks like Kat beside the points he had already taken. "So what do you want me to find out about her?"
"It would help if you could tell me which family she is in and where is she now. I do have a lead that I learned from Professor Trelawney, she said the only other Seers belonged to the Everhart family so maybe you could look up if there was ever an Evelyn Everhart."
He nodded, noting down the word Everhart. "Very specific. But at least the lead will take us somewhere."
"I hope so too."
He pocketed his notebook and quill as I did not have much to tell him aside from all the information that I had given him. But the thoughtful frown on his features lingered as he added, "You know, she could be related to you if she really looked so similar to you. I mean, you're adopted. You must be from a wizarding family because I once heard Mum say that you were a Pureblood too which couldn't have been possible if you were born to Muggles... The Everharts are purebloods although I know nothing else about their family, just heard that name in passing."
Percy had switched to his investigative mode as he was running all the information in his head and trying to conclude. My ears had perked up when he said the Everharts were purebloods but he noticed that so he was quick to justify it.
"You don't know anything else about the Everharts?"
He shrugged, "They are a very discreet lot, we hardly see any at Hogwarts or the Ministry. But I will look into them and let you know."
"Alright," I nodded, smiling at him, "thank you, Percy. I owe you."
He got startled as if he had suddenly thought about something but got shaken out of it by my voice. But then he didn't react to that as he smiled too and replied, "Of course you do. Don't forget it."
Something was off. But I let that thought slide.
Percy was going to do me a big favor if he found out about the Everharts and Evelyn as it would clear so many doubts I had that I couldn't clear from anyone else.
So for now, I simply had to wait until Percy managed to deliver the required information.
