Chapter 9: His Birthday, An Apology, The Forgotten Flower Blooms

He reached the mansion and saw a limousine parked in the parking lot, thinking either it was a special guest or Mrs. Roberts. Not wanting to see the two, he second thought his coming here. But it was getting dark and cold outside, so the proposers of the motion. "Go into the mansion" won the debate and he found himself, moving closer to the big doors the opened the mansion that held about 130 floors of secrets and memories.

He pushed the doors opening them, soon jumping back out when he saw all the staff, Mr. and Mrs. Roberts jumping from behind the couches, the counters, the huge vases, and under the coffee tables and a banner that said "happy birthday, Darra" in big, bold letters came hanging from the ceiling, confetti shooting out from hidden canons and balloons falling from the ceiling. Slight laughter filled the room as everyone studied the stunned Darra, some of the staff, pulling out their phones and clicking pictures, including Mr. Roberts, as his wife scolded him playfully for taking advantage of the situation.

He saw Mrs. Roberts coming close to him, and instead of her aura being terrifying and cold, it was warm and welcoming, reminding him of his mother. She kneeled down to be able to reach his height and played with his shirt nervously as she looked around. Sighing, she decided to speak. "I'm sorry for the way I talked to you earlier.

I shouldn't have ever said things like that, moreover to an orphan child who is still recovering from his parent's death. I'm so sorry." She began to sob as small tears threatened to fall down her cheeks. "I just felt jealous because you kept on talking about your parents with such a confident tone in your voice. They must've been good people, and I respect them more than ever. I just...I just wanted to love and to be loved.

I just wanted a child who would love and care for me with this whole world and beyond, and I would give them the same I swear! I won't talk to you in a harsh manner anymore. I will cherish you like you're the last diamond on earth. All I ask for is your love in return. And I don't expect it right away cause you recently lost your parents, it's gonna be hard for you to move on. And I know we can never replace your parents.

But I promise, I" She paused, looking over her shoulder to see Mr. Roberts lay a hand on her shoulder. She held it tightly, continuing the sentence. "And Coal will be here with you every step of the way!" She said, pulling him into a light embrace, and suddenly, he remembered his mom. He remembered his mom in this woman that he thought would be his worst nightmare for the rest of his life. The wind gushed through them as if pushing Darra's hands to return her hug. Unable to hold back anymore, he hugged her, tight, as if never wanting to let her go as if hugging his mother. "In time, I think I will learn to love you both as my parents." He muttered as he tightened his embrace.

The rest of the night was filled with fun, music loud enough to be heard on the 5th floor was blasting in the lobby. The staff members chatting and dancing, John, one of those who worked behind the counters had finally found the courage to ask May, one of the girls who did the cleaning jobs around the house for a dance.

Mr. and Mrs. Roberts were sitting next to Darra, Laura on his right, Coal on his left. And they talked and talked and talked for what seemed like hours, but enjoying each other's company. They talked about different kinds of toys, their favorite cars, and types of ice cream, his parents, and school. "Coal, Laura, will I be enrolling in school here next year?" He asked both of them. "Wow, the thought never crossed my mind." Coal said recklessly and earned himself a shoulder full of punch from Laura who was giving him the don't-say-that look. "Actually I have thought about that and I'm willing to enroll you in next year." She said smiling at him. He smiled back, wider, thinking about seeing Lilly again.

It was soon time to open his gifts. He got lots of gifts from the staff since each one brought him a gift. He received toy cars with remote controls, board games, Movies on CD, action figures of the marvel superheroes, and many other gifts. Then it was time, for Mr. and Mrs. Roberts to present their gifts to him. Mrs. Roberts was first, she presented a cuboid that had the picture of the iPhone on top of the cover. "Is it..."

He hesitated to open it, but he saw the encouraging eyes of Mrs. Roberts urging him to open it. He opened it and saw an iPhone sitting on a bunch of bubble wraps. "A new phone?!?" He almost shouted with excitement and joy in his eyes. "I saw you with that old one and thought it would be nice to buy you a new one. And I also caught you staring at my phone so..." She was whirling her fingers around and her foot was dancing in rhythm with her fingers, nervous to know if he liked her gift or not. He smiled, "Thank you, so very much Laura. I shall keep it forever."

"Aww, your welcome." She said her face lighting up to know that he liked her gift. She then stepped back and brought Mr. Coal forward. He kneeled down to give him a gift wrapped in paper that had snowflakes decorated on it, with a red background. He unwrapped it to see a snow globe with a picture of a mother and her baby boy, and when he shook it, it made the sound of jingle bells and it seemed it snowed in that small round ball.

"I know it sounds more Christmassy than a birthday gift but it was the close I could get to you and your mother. It's meant to represent that the both of you will always have a love for each other even in the tough times, and even though death separates you, she is always watching over you from above." He said and his wife gave him a hug from behind. "Thank you, Coal. This has touched my heart, and I shall keep it forever. I promise." Everyone clapped at the three of them, some of the guys whistling and some of the women crying.

"Goodnight, Darra. Sweetest of dreams." She caressed his head as she had just finished putting him to bed, Coal by the door, leaning onto the wall, watching his wife, and their son. "Goodnight Laura." He said, as he snuggled closely to her arm, she stood up, walking towards the exit, glancing one more time at her now, sleeping son, switching off the lights, and exiting the room. When he couldn't hear their footsteps anymore, he stood up, putting the now, exposed iPhone into one of his lockers on his nightstand, next to the twenty-dollar bill Coal gave him.

He tried giving it back to him since he had no use of it, but Coal insisted on him keeping it, to think of it as birthday money. He promised himself not to ever use the phone until he was eighteen because he believed that he would become a spoiled child if he began using gadgets at such a young and tender age.

All his toys were lying around his room, yet he refused to touch any until about a week later, when he felt the expensive gifts would become old, therefore he could touch them with his hands, he thought were unworthy of holding such expensive gifts. He opened his window to stare up at the moonlight, his heart filled with joy and excitement.

Thinking about calling Grace and telling her all about it when realizing it was already late and he didn't want to disturb her about it. He then remembered that she was able to send him a text message, why wouldn't he be able to do it as well? So he switched on his old phone, seeing as he had 65% battery left. He could last with it for about four days or five if he only used about 10 minutes per day. He scanned the phone for the messenger app.

Succeeding, he began to write to the number that was saved in his contacts, Grace's number. He began to express how the night went, detail by detail, removing the bits that had to do with his parents' death. When he was finally done, he pressed the send button, and it began processing, it would either go through or be denied.

And he prayed hard for the message to go through. After a short pause, he heard a ding sound coming from his phone, and he saw that his message went through. He was so happy, willing to shout his heart out, but he decided to consider Laura and Coal and pretty much the entire neighborhood. He sat at his windowpane, staring at the moon and seeing his mother's image in it, but instead of crying and feeling sad, he felt happy that the moon was able to show him a picture of his mother. Thinking to himself, maybe it wasn't so bad that he was living in America with his adopted family.

Just ten floors below were the garden in the backyard of the mansion under Darra's window, which now had a small flower blooming under the moonlight. The stalk that had a leaf on each side, an unusual color, instead of green, blue now had a small but noticeable flower, the same color and of the leave, blue, purple, and a hint of pink at the end of each petal was sending an incredibly attracting and earthly sent that could be smelled from miles away. The flower itself was quite strange, it had a white glow around its edges under the pale light of the moon and seemed to only bloom under the same, pale but luminous, light of the full moon. An unearthly scent, for a deadly price.
