Chapter 13: Lost

She said, coming closer to him, about to step front and he took one step back, not wanting her too close to him, as weird things would happen to his body, his face would grow hot, his cheeks, red and he would begin to stammer and whirl his fingers around if things got out of hand. "Don't you feel cold?" He dared to ask, tired of the awkward silence that sat between them. She smiled at him as if expecting him to ask.

She closed her eyes, the smile on her face growing wider, as the wind blew their hair, sending darts through Darra's skin, as she seemed to feel the opposite. She lifted her arms, now going horizontal as if embracing the coldness. "Everyone seems to hate the cold, it's harsh and violent to them, but soft and welcoming to me."

She said, opening her eyes, Darra could see the excitement in her eyes, yet she stood calm, her eyes having an opposite emotion to her body. He noticed the rope she was holding, tightly wrapped around her hand. The rope was leading to a rectangular body, which had a handle on each side, with a backrest at the back of the body. "Wanna go sledding?" She asked as she seemed to notice he was staring at her sled.

"Okay, I guess." They both headed towards the hill where all the kids were sledding, now the hill was empty and there weren't that many children in the park anymore, as it was getting dark. They climbed from the foot of the hill to the top. Lilly holding the sled so Darra would be able to go in without it riding down the hill.

She then got in quickly, sitting between his legs, not too close, but it was enough just to make him blush, a deep, bright red. She then pushed them forward with her arms, and the sled started to move, soon going fast down the hill. He heard her screams and shouts of joy and he thought there was nothing better in the world to listen to.

"I wish there was a way to go faster." He shouted as they were halfway down the hill. "Faster faster" They both chanted like five-year-old kids on the merry-go-round. He smelled an unearthly scent, he couldn't quite put his finger on. He thought he smelled lavender, but there was a certain spiciness in its scent.

Then he thought it was a rose, but there was a certain tanginess in the scent. Then he thought of sunflowers, but there was a certain sweet yet sourness in its scent. He could've sworn he saw the snow, rising and taking them higher and faster. It seemed he wasn't imagining things, for Lilly looked at the snow that was now about three feet from the ground.

"I don't know what's happening but I like it." She shouted as she enjoyed the wind in her face, her hands up in the air as she shouted in joy. Most girls would've screamed and asked to be taken off the sled. But she was least worried about that, in fact, not worried at all. She instead decided to enjoy the moment while it lasted.

He felt warmth radiating from around his body and he decided to enjoy the moment, as well, for he felt this is a once in a lifetime thing. "Faster!" He heard Lilly scream and the snow took them higher and faster. They were closing their eyes, smiles plastered across their faces, and with every passing moment, going higher and faster. About ten minutes after their crazy roller-coaster, the snow dropped and they dropped along with it from ten feet above the ground.

It was only a short while, but Darra thought he was sleeping for hours. He opened his eyes, his head aching and his sight blurry. He reconnected his vision, from three copies of an image to the original, then focusing on making the image clear, his migraine slowly reducing. When he was able to see properly again, he saw Lilly laying on the snow, a few feet from the sled. He slowly got up from the sled, walking at an immensely slow pace, then slowly picking it up, wondering if Lilly was hurt or okay.

"Lilly..." He said in a low and muffled voice. "Lilly, wake up." He knelt and shook her lightly. "Lilly!" He raised his voice and saw her eyes slowly beginning to lift. He felt a wave of relief go through him as he stood up, offering his hand. She took it, trying to stand up but she tripped over her own feet, holding his hand tighter.

He then held her other hand and helped her stand up. She smiled softly at him, then burst into laughter. "That was the most fun I've ever had in all my life." She shouted and began to spin around, falling just after two twirls. It seemed to him that she didn't have her balance in check yet. He chuckled. But his smile soon went flying off his mouth, off to join the other one high in the sky that gave off orange, light pink, and purple hues.

As he saw the sun at the end of the earth. Halfway gone. But that was the least of his troubles. He noticed there was a water body right next to them, it looked to be a lake, though the biggest he had ever seen, about fifteen feet ahead, and for some reason, it wasn't frozen. The small little crystals of snow that fell onto the lake seemed to vanish right when they landed on it as if the lake was hot. And pure snow all around them, in every corner and turn, no site of the park or any children. They were lost.
