Savoring the Odds
Quite awhile ago, I worked in a casino dealing cards to pay my way through University. When on a break from dealing, I scrawled out this little rhyme for a university poetry class assignment that was due the next day. After finishing it, I read it to a few colleagues in the back room. They laughed and insisted on pinning it to the staff bulletin board in the dealer's lounge where it remained for quite some time.
Hope you like it too.
Savoring the Odds
The wheel spins through my way of life,
a turn of a card,
a toss of the dice.
Luck's not a lady but an odd of the day.
You may win or lose
but I shall have my way.
Probability's the tune that I have learned well.
The music I love—
the ringing of bells.
You say it's addiction,
give it up,
take a stand.
And I will reply,
I'll bet you I can.
