Chapter 2

---Bidziil's POV---

The wolves whimpered as they struggled to get up. Those that were smart enough to back off looked wide-eyed at their pack mates before gulping as they glanced at me. They shifted on the spot, though several stayed in their animal form.

As a precaution, I'm sure of it. A wicked smirk slipped on my face while I crossed my arms, looking at the men who were eying me cautiously. "What are you?" One of the werewolves at my feet spat out, glaring up at me with a combination of hatred and fear.

The man flinched though when he met my burning gaze, my eyes probably as dark as charcoal. "What I am is of no concern of you. You rather be worried to why I am here." I stated, speaking cryptically since I wanted these men to remember this conversation.

They seemed confused but didn't dare to speak as I lowered my arms casually before taking a step closer, smiling coldly when they backed off. Cowards. I've seen them attack that small group of humans and they had easily outnumbered them three to one. But when they were faced with a fare fight, they cowered with their tails clutched tightly between their legs.

It made my temper flare up and probably my eyes as well, since the men stepped back, feeling threatened while those still as a wolf whimpered and laid down to in an attempt to sooth my anger.

"I've been sent here by the elders of my realm," I emphasized that last bit, watching with cold amusement as their eyebrows shot up and their eyes widening comically. "Because it has been brought under our attention that you immortals screwed this world over."

"Now hold on just a minute, that isn't our fault! Those humans are the cause of this!" The woman that shouted out stepped forwards, her eyes flaring up with the typical golden hue of a wolf's eyes.

Turning my attention to the woman, I scowled and spat in disgust. "Its true that they started the issue of ruining this world with their overpopulation and the global issues but your kin along with all the other immortals sat back and watched until you were forced to come out of your seats."

She seemed shocked but paled at the truth that slapped her ears and backed off, looking down at her feet in shame. My eyes scanned each and every one of the wolves, who had now all shifted back. "All of you could've done something to prevent this." I spat with a wave at the destroyed forest, the black trees as they twisted up towards the sky as if pleading for help.

I could sense that they all felt guilty but none of them was going to admit that they were in the wrong. The sun was slowly creeping up the sky, feeding me with warmth and energy as the rays caressed my face softly as a lover's touch.

"Now, I want to know when and why it was decided that humans should become the hottest thing to kill in this planet. Aiming for the weak, are we?" I asked sarcastically, seeing several of the weres shift on their feet as all of them stayed silent.

Thumping of more paws resounded through the forest, though they seemed heavier and faster at the same time. Several of the weres tilted their heads hopefully, some of them were even grinning broadly when two Lycanthropes stepped out of the woods. They stopped grinning though when the black one stepped back as soon as he laid eyes on me and growled in his mangled language before shifting.

"What has one of the Old Ones to do with our world?" The African male asked as soon as his fur dropped in shreds to the forest floor, giving me a shocked look. I snorted and leaned against one of the trees, rolling my eyes.

"Please, Ye'iitsoh is the only one of the family called like that. As to why I am here; I'm setting things straight again. My younger brother has neglected his worlds that he should've guarded and our mother has sent me out to fix this mess."

The Lycan swallowed harshly, undoubtedly trying to find out which one of the siblings I was. Clearly not my older brother but still... One of the female werewolves cleared her throat, gaining our attention as she flushed before stuttering," so-uhm...are you a ...god?"

I laughed at that, though it sounded more like a bark than laughter. The god thing was beginning to grow old. "No, we simply came before. Don't get your hopes up though, we're possibly stronger than those little deities." I shrugged, smirking as the wolves' pungent scent of fear filled the woods.

Oh, I so loved to tease. Especially cowards like these.

The Lycan didn't seem to know what to do, he simply stared at me with wide open mouth, closing it when I smiled slowly before pushing myself of the rough bark. His heartbeat was thudding wildly and I could almost see the gears in his head churn, trying to find a way out of this.

"Now, you and your pack are going to bring me to the group of humans you caught so I can ask them a few questions as well." My eyes narrowed instantly, making his dark skin pale in fear before he nodded and shifted, snarling at the werewolves as they began to whimper their protests.

Something, a small sound in the distance, drew my attention and I twisted my head slightly. "On second thought, wait here for a moment. There's something I need to check out." The wolves relaxed instantly as I flashed away, though I heard several gasps along with a soft curse from the Lycan when they saw me disappear in a burst of flames.

I reappeared on top of a large hill that looked out over a sea of waving golden grass, a city's skyline blurred out in the distance. My eyes scanned the grass, wondering what had pulled my attention before I saw some movement out of the corner of my eyes.

The grass parted on the far side as a little girl dashed out before a slightly older boy rushed out to stop her, grasping her hand tightly. I stepped forwards to stop him, thinking he was just like the wolves but it wasn't necessary; the girl looked up and smiled at the boy, making me realize that they belonged together.

Just when I was about to teleport myself back to the waiting wolves and Lycans, the grass parted again and this time I had to force myself to stay rooted to the spot.

A young male stepped out of the woods in just a pair of cut and worn jeans, showing his delicious body to the world. His muscles were clearly defined, though his body remained lithe. He smiled at the children and ruffled through his hair, holding one arm under the bundle of clothes and pressed up against his chest.

His lips pulled up into a soft smile as the kids continued ahead and he shook his head before his eyes landed directly on me. I gasped at the blankness of his eyes, the purity and intense gaze lying hidden in those depths and the shock of blue that swam in the middle.

I only saw caution mixed with curiosity in his gaze as his body tensed slightly, the smooth pale skin rippling when he turned in my direction. When I didn't move, he slowly relaxed and tilted his head, looking adorably confused, though adorable didn't seem to fit with him.

Sexy would do.

The young male simply backed away, keeping a close eye on me until he disappeared back in the grass, following the trail left behind by the two children. It wasn't until his dark eyes disappeared in the grass that I realized I had been holding my breath.

Damn the fact that I need to follow those wolves! I'd rather follow that vision through the grass...

I sighed and closed my eyes, smiling as I realized I had taken the man's appearance in completely. It would be rather hard to forget such a fine male specimen. With another sigh, I turned around to teleport back to the wolves.

I'll find you again, I swear.

---Thorn's POV---

The soft, natural scents of the grasslands were slowly giving away to the scent of smoke and pollution, making me aware that we were getting increasingly closer towards the city.

I hadn't realized we were this close until I hushed Blake and Lyra, calling them back to me since the urban fields weren't safe for us anymore. Then again, there wasn't a place on this world where we could hide safely, but the city provided us with a means to restock our supplies, get some better clothes and maybe a blanket for the kids.

That meeting in the fields of grass had shook me; I hadn't anticipated being watched so...hungrily by that man. I blinked slightly in shock when I realized I hadn't felt threatened at all, merely curious, cautious of his intentions but still.

I shook my head, dispelling the sight of his tanned, golden-brown skin, abs on display through the opened shirt and above all, those piercing gold eyes that had the strength to pin me to the spot, changing me to a mindless body.

"Okay, Blake, I need you to stay here with Lyra and Noah while I go into the city." Blake's eyes snapped towards me, the anxiety rolling of him in waves as he struggled to keep himself calm. Like I said, every human, hybrid or not, knew better than to casually stroll into the crumbling reminders of our past.

Blake nodded sharply while I handed him the baby, making sure that Noah was secured tightly to his chest, in the case we all needed to make a swift escape. Noah might be stronger than any human baby but he was still a newborn and I didn't want to jerk him around too much.

Scanning my eyes through the edge of the grasslands, I managed to find a tree that still had some leaves on it, giving Blake and Lyra a perfect opportunity to hide themselves behind.

"I'll be back soon, don't worry. We need more food and water, since our supplies are running out thanks to that group of humans." I added in annoyance, since I had only just realized that they had kept my backpack when they had rejected me.

Blake nodded and hoisted Lyra on his back before looking at me worriedly. "Stay safe Thorn and please come back soon." I smiled at the kid, hopefully in a reassuring way before he scampered of towards the tree while I made my way towards the city.

My heart thudded heavily in my chest as my shoes scraped over the gravely soil, the streets overgrown by plants and cracked over the years. What worried me more was the scent of decay and a pierced window a few feet above my head, where the glass was tainted with dried blood.

As I quietly walked into town, I couldn't help but hunch slightly, my eyes scanning each and every corner as I favored the sun-engulfed streets for now. The sunlight was a dear friend for now and I would make use of it while I was here.

The wind blew through the streets, my head shooting up when something creaked above me, only to scowl at the streetlight, which had managed to cling onto its post, barely, swaying in the wind with the screeching sound of iron grinding on iron.

"Fuck!" I hissed between my teeth, the tension inside of me building rapidly. It didn't help me to realize that it was already late in the afternoon, and it would quickly get darker.

My feet picked up their pace and I quickly went for the nearest store, throwing its glass doors wide open and locking them in place with a metal bin. Sunlight poured through the shop and I smiled in relief when I realized it was a shop for outdoor activities. Just my luck.

Within a few minutes, I had found a decent enough backpack, along with a medium sized sleeping bag that looked relatively good, though it smelled a bit weird. There was some money in the cash-register but I ignored that and walked around the desk, trying to find anything useful.

It might have taken me a few minutes but I got out the shop with a few cans we could use to cook our food in, a blanket and the backpack with sleeping bag. My ears were keen to pick up on any unnatural sounds as I rushed through town, searching for a store where I might find some warmer clothes for Lyra and Blake, and maybe some clothes for Noah.

I shot up startled when the unearthly voice screamed loudly in my head, making me winch before I backed away in the shadows, where the blue light had already disappeared into.

Voices were coming closer but I couldn't quite understand them. Part of me wanted to know what they were saying and more specifically, who or what was speaking. As if hearing my silent request, the blue light flickered slightly before making its way through the slowly darkening streets until it hovered outside a convenience store, where the voices were coming from.

"...Hardly anything left in this town. Are you sure humans even come here?" My eyes narrowed instantly as I stealthily approached the shop, staying behind the wall and completely engulfed in shadows.

"I could've sworn I heard a heartbeat in this town about two minutes ago but now its gone; it just stopped, vanished without a trace!" a second voice snapped before the sound of protesting iron resounded through the street while the black shadow intertwined with its twin before they both shot inside me.

The feeling was unpleasant, comparable to being submerged in ice water whilst being punched in the stomach. My mouth opened in a silent gasp while the two creatures inside growled and hissed before they ventured out on the street.

Both were well build males, though its was very obvious that neither of them were human; the one on the left had burgundy hair down to his hips, loose strands pushed behind his pointed ears while the other one had silver hair. My eyes kept on the second figure, scanning over his body to pinpoint what he was until he turned his head slightly to look at his companion.

The blood red eyes were a give-away. I pressed myself closer against the wall, wondering why the vampire hasn't picked up on my heart as it raced inside my chest, fueled by the pinch of dread and adrenaline racing through my blood.

My thoughts were harshly interrupted by an echoing scream that was soon replied by several others. I gasped, gaining the attention from the two creatures in the street but they only narrowed their eyes at me, unsure what to do.

"Fuck it, I'm not going to risk my life to capture whatever he is." The redhead stated before making a mad dash out of the city, the vampire hesitantly lingering in the streets before he glanced at the buildings surrounding me.

"Good luck, hybrid." He drawled, his accented voice reaching me over the growing screams before he simply vanished from sight. I gulped, my eyes searching the impending darkness as the sunlight was being shrouded by the buildings itself, combined with the sun slowly setting behind the skyline.

"Fuck!" I hissed under my breath, focusing on all my senses and abilities to survive. This was the reason why I didn't want to be in the vicinity of any city or town. When the immortal world had focused on us, they had viciously hunted and killed any human they could find before they found out about the hybrids living amongst them.

Cities had been whipped out within days, the corpses left behind to rot. But the witch-hunt had gained an unsuspected twist; by killing the humans in such a violent and brutal way, not even discriminating between men, women or children, their spirits were unable to rest and became warped, twisted with their confusion, anger and hatred.

Those spirits attracted the attention of lesser demons, more specifically Shadow demons, who devoured their souls instantly and remained in the city until this day. It were their screeches that made my ears ache while they woke up with a hunger for new souls.

Stay calm Thorn, you can do this. Okay, find a way out and trust your senses. And whatever you do, don't be seen!

I gulped slightly before taking a few deep breaths, trying to calm myself enough to stay hidden. My hands unclenched and I opened my eyes again, crouching slightly as I tightened the straps of my newly acquired backpack.

The city grew silent again, safe for the angry cry now and then or the breaking of glass when the demons took on their physical form. I crept through the alleyway, staying in the safety of the deeper shadows as I made my way slowly towards the main road that led out of the city.

The voices inside my head screeched and I ducked to the side as the shadow shot ahead of me, exploding in a red light as it engulfed the deformed husk of the shadow demon. Its completely black eyes appeared to be staring straight ahead but I could sense it prying through the shadows, looking for prey to devour.

I was crouching now, pushing myself further on hands and feet whilst ignoring the cold stone underneath my skin or the filth and grime I grabbed onto when pushing myself further away from the creature.

As soon as I managed to sneak out of the alley, three more shadows shot out of me and exploded around the danger ahead, making me curse mentally before I zigzagged between them, hiding behind garbage cans and cars.

I was literally on edge and it didn't help that I could hear their growls and crazed cries, the sound of bare feet slapping on stone or the scuffle in the darkness accompanied with the normal sounds of the city.

Just a few more streets...I need to get back to the kids before someone finds them!

My heart was beating in my throat as I slowly sped up as much as I dared in these circumstances. I didn't want to be spotted but I didn't dare leave Blake, Lyra and Noah alone for any moment longer. What if they tried to find me and stumbled into the city?

Finally I made it to the main street but cursed under my breath as it just turned into a sea of red in front of my eyes; countless of demons were prowling the street, making it impossible for me to exit the town this way.

I crept back and followed a street running parallel with the main one before fate lucked out on me. Just as I managed to get around the main horde of demons, I managed to stumble on my trembling legs and tripped, shattering the already broken window beside me in the process.

My ears rung with the screeches of the demons behind me before I pushed myself off the wall and ran, not even caring that I was making noise.

"Shit. Shit. Shit!" I cursed while running through the streets, hearing the demons grunting and wailing behind as they chased me. I dared a look over my shoulder when I jumped over a decaying bench and paled when I saw three demons jumping over it as well, their black eyes glowing with demonic delight.

I rounded the corner with the help of a large truck, which made it easier to push myself up and between the long line of cars in an attempt to get away from the demons. They smacked into the iron, making it protest against the harsh treatment before I heard the hood of the truck screech as they crawled onto it.

My heart was racing in my chest as my legs kept pumping, pushing me faster and faster as I dodged and passed more demons, making the pursuing ones crash into them. I knew I was closer to the edge of town but was forced to run into a building when I ran on the street and saw more demons running towards me, making me backtrack and jump in the darkness of the open door.

It was with sheer luck that when one of the demons managed to tackle me and pin me down just within reach of the stairs, another one crashed into the deformed creature, fighting for the right to feed. I blinked rapidly, trying to dispel the image of that humanoid form with deformed jaws and hands before I shot off the ground and up the stairs.

You might think I was crazy for running into a building but I was desperate to survive and I knew these demons weren't the smartest around. So when I saw a window that wasn't barricaded and opened, I simply took a chance and leap of faith. Literally.

I crashed hard into the grass; panting and chest heaving while my back and legs protested against the hard treatment before I looked up at the building. The kiss of sunlight on my face was barely there but I nearly cried in joy, because the demons that were screaming their protests loudly could only watch as I managed to escape their claws.

My feet pounded against the sand as I rushed towards the tree where I left the kids, feeling a spark of happiness at the sight of their faces when the worry turned to joy and they smiled back.

"What took you so long!" Lyra scolded from Blake's back as they made their way down the tree. I simply shook my head and placed my hands on my knees, filling my longs with the oxygen they were craving for.

Blake patted my shoulder before handing Noah over when I had managed to catch my breath again. The child cooed and reached out with its hands, making me rasp out a chuckle before I placed a kiss on top of its head and strapped him against my chest, safe and secure.

"We need to get moving, fast. I was caught up in the city and those demons will try to follow me as soon as the last sunlight disappears." I stated, my head swiveling around to look at the city in the distance. We were more up the hill, giving us more sunlight and time to escape but still, I didn't want to make any chances.

I froze however when I noticed a flash of burgundy out of the corner of my eyes and before I could blink, I was standing nose to nose with the creature that had appeared in front of me.

"Seems like your luck has run out, hybrid." The voice lilted as I stared up straight into a pair of blood-red eyes while I felt Lyra press herself into my back with Blake probably backing up towards me so she was safe in the middle.

We were no-where near safe though; it seems that my luck really had abandoned me in the middle of that city. I just hoped I hadn't doomed us all.
