As the new gang flew on Knight to new places, Kit soon urged Knight to stop in a nearby house in the Earth Kingdom, parking the Sky Bison into a barn, where he immediately started to chew on the hay.
Shasa confidently knocked on the door, Nika and Toko quickly taking off the heavy coats they had from home.
"Before we had stopped here, before the Fire Nation took us on that ship," Honey spoke before Tango Koryu opened the door, and upon seeing Kit, Shasa, and Honey, quickly ushered them in, before stopping at Toko and Nika.
"You know them?" Tango asks.
"Yeah, they're safe." Kit nods.
"Where's everyone?" Shasa questions, upon seeing an almost empty house.
"Not too long ago, the Fire Nation took over the areas near here, and took all the Earthbenders," Ichika says, her older brother Fumiya tending to the fire. "All the Earthbenders expect Taka and a new arrival who claims he's the Avatar."
"Because I am!" Xavier says. "If you teach me a new element, then I will show you!"
(Since the Avatar is the master of 4 elements, and technically the "Hero" I think Xavier's a perfect fit! haha)
"It's good that you guys have come, maybe we can see if Xavier's really the Avatar." Tango smiles.
"I can teach him Fire-bending." Shasa says. "We're going to the Northern Water Tribe, to find a master waterbender for Nika to master Water-bending." Shasa answers.
"I can teach him Air-bending!" Kit eagerly volunteers.
"Me and Xavier and learn Fire-bending together!" Honey smiles.
"I can teach you some basics that I learned," Nika says.
"I can teach you survival skills that don't need bending!" Toko declares. "Wait, am I really the only non-bender of team Avatar?"
"Guess so buddy." Kit claps a hand on Toko's back.
"Well, let's see if Mr. Avatar, is really the Avatar!" Fumiya declares, clapping his hands together. "Let's go!"
"Wait!" Taka exclaims. "What about Arman, Dante, and Delta! They're still in that Fire Nation prison!"
"Well, I am the plan-master!" Toko boasts. "Shasa, Honey, you teach the basics of Fire-bending to Xavier, while the rest of us compile a plan to save uh-" Toko turns to Taka. "Who?"
"My brother Arman, and his friends, Dante and Delta." Taka patiently explains.
"Right." Toko blushes.
"We can bring Xavier somewhere safe from any Fire Nation Soldiers." Shasa says, before leading Xavier and Honey out of the hut.
"Right." Toko nods, insides turning inside and out.
"So, what's the plan, o' great one?" Fumiya asks, his red eyes narrowing at the Water Tribe boy.
"Sorry, uh. Okay, Taka, how good is your Earth-bending?" Toko asks.
"I'm still learning." Taka sighs. "Arman, Dante, and Delta were teaching me until, you know."
"Well, can you lift a boulder?" Toko asks.
"Yeah, that's easy!" Taka declares.
"Are you trying to get Taka arrested?" Ichika asks.
"Well, do you know where the prison is?" Toko retorts.
"We only know there's this Fire Nation ship that takes them to the prison, and that leaves every other day with supplies," Ichika says. "Today's the day they'll be leaving again."
"My plan is that we get Taka arrested, and then we follow the ship under the cover of the clouds, thanks to Kit and Nika, while on Knight. Taka can find Arman, Dante, and Delta, and then bring them somewhere, and we'll make our big escape!" Toko crosses his arms proudly. "Any questions?"
"It sounds foolproof..." Fumiya starts. "Go ahead."
"Wait! But I can't really bend water that much!" Nika protests.
"Okay, we can improvise, we'll follow at a distance," Toko says.
"How am I gonna get arrested?" Taka asks.
"We'll just make you Earth-bend right in front of some soldiers," Toko says.
"Yeah, there's a troop coming soon." Tango hums in agreement.
"Great!" Toko says and screams suddenly alerted them of the 3 people who left.
"What's going on?!?" Tango questions, running outside. "Oh!!!"
"What?" Kit runs out. "Knight!"
Outside, it seemed like someone had accidentally started a forest fire, as Shasa, Honey, and Xavier ran away from the flames.
"He's the Avatar!" Honey shrieks, running frantically from the fire.
"I accidentally set the forest on fire!" Xavier shrieks.
"Nika, I think we need a Water-bender!" Ichika yells, the flames drawing closer and closer.
"I-" Nika starts before she ran to a water pipe. "Please, Tui and La, and the Moon Spirit. Just let me summon one good wave to save these people!"
Nika closed her eyes, focused on the water that must be in the pipe, raised her hands up, then down, then forcefully up, then pulling her hands back slowly.
"Woah! Nika!" Toko cheers, but Nika faintly heard her twin over the rushing sound of water. She pivoted herself, and pushed forward, opening her eyes, as the water splashed onto the trees, taking out the fire, but also freezing the forest.
"Well..." Fumiya starts, before fainting.
Taka's mouth fell open, before using his Earth-bending to restore the pipe.
"We saw that!" Fire Nation Soldiers ran toward the two, raising up their weapons. "We saw the girl Water-bend and the boy Earth-bend!"
Nika and Taka raised their hands, as the onlookers couldn't do anything but watch as the two got escorted away in handcuffs.
"I'm sorry guys." Xavier sighs, as the soldiers were finally out of earshot. "It's my fault that Nika and Taka got arrested."
"On the contrary, I guess the plan is in motion," Toko says. "But the adding variable of Nika is seriously hard. What if they bring her somewhere else? Also, that Water-bending was sick."
"Then let's follow them! Come on!" Ichika says.
"Yeah! We'll catch up with you at the docks." Shasa agrees. Honey nods, clenching her fist.
"Okay, we'll come at night with Fumiya, Xavier, Tango, Kit, and Knight," Toko says.
"I'll stay here. People might need me." Tango answers.
"Okay then." Toko nods. "Minus Tango."
"We're going on a rescue mission!" Kit yells, excitedly punching the air. "I knew leaving the Air Temple was a good idea! I've met cool people, a hot Water-Tribe boy, The Avatar, and now I'm on an epic mission!"
"It'll be a trip." Xavier nods, hands at his hips.
* * * *
Nika knew one thing about ships. Fire Nation prison ships are uncomfortable.
She was shoved in this cell along with Taka, hands still cuffed, while Taka was released, the guards exclaiming that the entire ship was made of metal, and you can't bend metal, before roughly throwing tattered prison garb towards them, ordering them to throw it over their clothes. Taka quickly put it on, but realizing Nika couldn't do anything with her hands behind her back, quickly helped her put it on, tying the cloth in the back. Nika tried to be of some sort of comfort to the young Earth-bender as the ship rocked with the waves.
She had seen some other Earth-benders but didn't bother to get a good look at them, although she did overhear the Fire Nation prisoners tell the prison to prepare for the water-bender, which she assumed was her.
"Nika, what if they take you somewhere else?" Taka worriedly exclaims.
"Don't worry Taka, everything will be fine. I hope." Nika muttered the last part, lest she worried Taka even more. "Tell me about your brother and his friends."
"Oh, Arman's the best big brother! He's so cool with all of his earth-bending skills! Dante's super hyper, you'll love him! Delta's really calm though, he's like Dante's impulse control. They're as close as anyone!" Taka says, waving his arms in the air. "Tell me about the Water Tribe where you came from!"
"Oh, well, it's the Southern Water Tribe, so it's not that impressive. A lot of the men have gone off to war, and the Fire Nation actually took all of our Water-benders, but I'm the last one. Toko's my twin brother, but I also have an older brother named Valt. We left our family and friends behind though." Nika starts, trailing off.
"Oh. My mom and dad have gone off to war. Mom's a medic and dad's a soldier, along with the other's parents, so Tango's taking care of us. We call him Pops though." Taka smiles.
A Fire Nation soldier opens the door to the cell, pulling Nika and Taka through roughly, as they approached the shipyard.
The Warden smirks at everyone. "Earth-benders. It is my pleasure to welcome you aboard my modest shipyard. I am your warden. I prefer to think of you not as prisoners, but as honored guests. And I hope you come to think of me as your humble and caring host. You will succeed here if you simply abide-"
The Warden pauses, suddenly interrupted by a prisoner in line coughing. With no warning, he leaps into the air and aims a blast of fire at the prisoner's legs in anger. The prisoner cowers away for safety as the warden stands defiantly toward the man.
"What kind of guest dishonors his host by interrupting him?! Take him below!" He swings his arms. Some guards escort the man away. "One week in solitary will improve his manners. Simply treat me with the courtesy that I give you, and we'll get along famously. But before we start, I see we have a Water-bender in our midst. But pay no mind to her. She is not of use, and will be taken away tomorrow."
Everyone's eyes follow the Warden's, landing on Nika as she shifted uncomfortably.
The prisoners are taken on a tour of the facility. Below, fellow prisoners are seen laboring away, under strict supervision.
"You will notice, Earth-benders, that this rig is made entirely of metal. You are miles away from any rock or earth. So, if you have any illusions about employing that brutish savagery that passes for bending among you people... forget them. It is impossible." The Warden smiles, seemly happy with the prisoner's responses. "Good day."
A guard escorts the prisoners into the prison courtyard, as Taka holds onto Nika's arm carefully. They're the last to come out, however, as the Earth-benders made their way into the courtyard.
"Taka?" A tall young boy gasps, which Nika assumed was Arman. "What are you doing here?"
"Arman!" Taka grins, running toward his brother. "Dante! Delta!"
"Huh? Taka?" Dante gasps. "It's been a long time since I've seen you! Man, I missed you!"
"Who's this?" Delta asks, staring at Nika. "If she's an Earth-bender, why is she cuffed?"
"That's Nika! Shasa, Honey, and Kit came back, but Nika and her brother Toko were with them. We also met the Avatar!" Taka explains. "He accidentally set fire to the forest, so then Nika made this really cool wave, just like a tsunami, and froze the entire forest! But I'm pretty sure it's melted by now. I fixed the pipe, however, and now we're here!"
"A Water-bender? Cool! Maybe you can summon another wave to get us out!" Dante cheers, running up to Nika, his face getter red. "You can do that right? Right?"
"Uh, that was just a fluke. I'm not a master." Nika shook her head. "And I'm in cuffs. It's not possible for me to get out of these without a key."
"Actually, it is." Arman smiles.
Delta looks proud of himself, smiling ever-so confidently, before continuing. "I created metal-bending, but I haven't used it a lot yet. We were waiting for a chance."
"Well, everyone else is going to come tonight, so there's your chance!" Taka answers.
"Maybe. But I don't know..." Nika starts.
"The first rule of any sort of bending is that you need to believe in yourself," Arman says.
"Yeah... and Water-benders get their power from the moon!" Nika starts, her smile growing wider.
"Alright! We're gonna get outta here!" Dante cheers, jumping up and down. "Isn't it great guys! Huh, Delta?"
"Yeah, Dante. It'll be great." Delta smiles, lovingly staring at the blonde boy.
"Are they together or something?" Nika asks.
"I actually don't know," Taka says.
"Yeah, they are," Arman nods eagerly. "And about time!"
Delta bit his lip, trying not to blush, but failing. "Maybe we should get out of the way. The prison guard's coming to do his rounds and we don't want trouble." He grabbed Dante's hand, pulling him over to the wall.
Arman took Taka by the hand, following the sea-green haired male, as the pink-haired girl turned her head, her pigtails held up by her star-shaped bobbles jingling, before following the brown-haired siblings.
Later, under the cover of darkness, Nika quickly woke up the Kusaba siblings, and the couple, before ushering them towards the edge of the shipyard, where Kit and Knight stayed.
"Ready?" Toko asks, as everyone reunited.
"Yeah. And it's a cloudy day, Kit, let's get a cloud-cover." Nika smiles at Kit, who's eyes had raised up excitedly.
"Aw man, this is so cool! Air-bending master and a Water-bending master making clouds together!" Kit cheers softly, Nika blushing at the word master.
"Here." Delta approaches Nika. "I can take off those handcuffs for you."
Nika turned around, and Delta focused on the metal before him, clenching his fists, taking a deep breath, and opening them.
"Thanks." Nika smiles, shaking out the metal, throwing it on the ground and fingering her necklace.
Every single child in every nation at the age of 10 will get a charm with their "guardian spirit" from a nomadic group called the Guardian Whisperers. It's sacred to every culture, which was why even the Fire Nation wouldn't take the charms away. Nika had her charm, her guardian spirit called Nymph, while Toko had Treptune, but on top of the charm necklace was a traditional Water Tribe necklace, passed down from her grandmother, to her mom, and to her.
"What's your guardian spirit? Mine's Dragon." Dante asks, as they took off the prison garb, and took off, Kit and Nika on Knight's head to form a cloud around them.
"Mine's actually Air Knight, but funnily enough, Knight and Air Knight have the same name, so I just call Air Knight Air." Kit says.
"Nymph. Toko's guardian is Treptune." Nika answers as Toko smiles.
"Wizard Fafnir!" Fumiya proudly declares.
"Huh, I know someone with Fafnir. Guess you guys share a guardian spirit's family tree." Kit comments.
"Ashindra." Arman answers.
"Iara," Ichika says.
"Devolos," Delta replies, touching his necklace.
"Mine's Siren." Shasa answers
"Hamsa." Honey replies, leaning against her sister.
"Breaker Xcalius!" Xavier answers. "I know someone named Alexander Shakadera who has the original."
"Yeah, we know him! He's a family friend!" Toko chimes in.
"Man, oh, man, I can't wait to get my charm! Just one more year!" Taka groans, earning a laugh from the residents on Knight. "Oh yeah, Toko, your plan was amazing! Great job!"
"Oh! Thanks! But I did tell you I'm the plan-master!" Toko blushes, before regaining a proud smile.
"We know!" They all groan, and Toko sheepishly rubs his head, chuckling to himself.
"Can you do that more often?" Kit says, out of nowhere.
"Do what?" Toko asks, cocking his head to one side like he does when he's confused, and looking at Kit with a perplexed expression.
"What you just did. It's so cute!" Kit grins wildly, winking at Toko, who madly blushes.
"Kit Lopez, maybe you should stop flirting with Toko before I force you to go back to the Eastern Air Temple!" Shasa forcefully orders, mom-mode setting in.
"Haha, you don't have to do that Shasa, I'm just saying." Kit sweat-drops, nervously laughing.
As Knight finally flew down towards the little shack that Tango Koryu owned, the forest covered in ice was still melting.
"You did that Nika?" Delta gaps at the forest, supporting a sleeping Dante. "You just might have the potential to become a skilled Water-bender."
"Really? Thanks, Delta, it really means a lot." Nika smiles.
Knight lands in front of the shack, Kit hopping off easily, twirling in a small wind tornado. "Heya Pops! Ya ready!"
Tango rushed outside, stuff almost neatly packed into boxes. "Yup! Just need a little help putting them on."
Kit smiles, hopping onto the saddle of Knight where everyone was sitting, going to the very back and pulling out his Air-bending staff.
Pointing it at the boxes, Kit summons a gust of wind, which he then uses the staff to control, and motioned for people to move, and set the boxes filled with stuff on Knight, before helping Tango up.
"What's the meaning of this?" Arman asks. "Aren't we staying here?"
"When word gets out that 5 prisoners escaped, they're definitely going to check where they lived." Toko says. "So, we're going to find you a good place to stay."
"There's a cave I've mapped out not to far from here." Tango informs. "Just a little bit Northwest."
"Yup! Time to go, Knight!" Kit pulls on the reins, heading Southwest.
"Uh, Kit?" Toko starts. "It's Northwest."
"Oh! Hehe, I totally knew that!" Kit blushes, turning the other way.
"How will we communicate?" Fumiya questions.
"We'll have a code word I guess." Shasa shrugs.
"I know! Since we're going on a journey fit for heroes, our code word shall be 'The Hero's Journey!' if we need help, we'll send a message to you, and you'll the code word!" Xavier declares.
A murmur of agreement rippled through the group.
"Well, I hope the best for you." Honey says.
"You too. Stop the Fire Nation's war, and if you need help, we'll be here." Arman promises.
(Yes, this means requests for Rise characters will be allowed! Also, there will be a part 4, so I think it may be 10 parts, but I really don't want to write a full-blown fanfic because I already have too much, but it'll end nicely, promise! So, how do you like it?)
