Chapter Twenty Eight - Desperate Cindy
Xander has always been there for me. Even though we try to ignore the attraction between us, we find ourselves coming even closer at the end of the day. I'd want to do anything to see him happy.
With a serious look of concentration and determination on my face, I picked up a chalk and traced some of the lines to the main circle. With a deep breath, I channeled the jumbled emotions within me into the patterns that were similar to that of the ones in my Grandma's grimoire.
Infusing with my magic, the chalk shimmered and sunk into the floor, glowing alongside with all the drawn patterns around me now. The smaller circles which I've drawn around the main circle began to rotate in different directions slowly as some glowing words began to detach themselves from the wards and hover above my figure. Rays of light shot out from the intersected lines and engulfed me from all sides completely. It felt so good that I didn't even realize that I was levitating the whole time!
Awesome, I can fly!
"Focus! Don't lose it!". Minuet yelled from the other side of the room, like to encourage me, but right now he was distracting me!
I took another deep breath to calm myself down even more and closed my eyes to make this whole thing more relaxing, just like a meditation in yoga would do!
I felt some sparks within me flow across the joints of my body and as this was happening, I immediately felt cozy, warm and happy all of a sudden.
The positivity around me was so strong that I thought I'd lose it any moment from now. I'm guessing it's something related to that of side effects...cause I was embarrassing myself by blurting out things about my feelings for Xander non-stop.
How embarrassing....
"Yea, I knew you had feelings for Xander, your knight in shining armour...your sunshine and all that..". He mumbled with a snort.
Wait what-
"You never stopped talking about your knight and how he swooped in to save you, it was a very good bedtime story for my perfect beauty sleep in my cat form".
Dammit! He's making me lose focus slowly...
I don't want to end up being fried by these shields!
I'd have to save the process for anytime I think.
"Oh my bad, you'll have to get used to me being boring". I rolled my eyes with a small frown and flickered my arms to discontinue the warding. I recited the words backwards and watched as the circles gradually fade off as if they were never even there. I let out a sigh of relief when I could feel my feet back on the ground once more as height was my greatest enemy.
"But it's okay, you're useful to me when I've trouble sleeping". He chuckled behind his knuckles teasingly. "You should do that often".
"Ugh, yea I get it...my story's boring. I mean who would find a story about a desperate Cinderella looking out for her prince interesting?".
"Why not? Of course I would...". He whispered behind my ears as he stood behind me. "I mean which weirdo doesn't love that tale?".
"Huh?". My face went red from the sudden closeness.
"Why was Cinderella so desperate?". He gave me that cute sharp grin again as he asked the question.
"Uhh Minuet, you do know that I'm actually referring to myse-".
"I know...it's about the desperate troublemaker and her sunshine". He cut in, walking away from my figure to the bedside.
"Hey! I'm no troublemaker, I'm more of a peacemaker...". I pointed out, stalking him from behind with annoyance. He says I'm trouble when he barely gives me rest!
Minuet laughed at my reaction, and I was pretty much surprised to see him laugh for the first time. It was cute, but embarrassing still.
"I'm thinking he's just like you". He chuckled. "Trouble, trouble, trouble". He muttered as a mocking singsong.
"He's no trouble! He's perfection!". I frowned deeply at his statement. "Your just jealous!".
"My bad...". He innocently said and raised his hands in the air for surrender.
I shot him a deep glare from across the room as the room was now suddenly silent. He didn't even realize my action until his ears did the job-and twitched softly. I scoffed when he raised an eyebrow and shrugged. Always so stubborn and feisty! He's supposed to give me an advice or something!
"Don't give me that eye". He broke the silence and staring contest. "It's very disturbing...".
"Excuse you". I hit my hand against my forehead with a sigh. "Aren't you going to advise me or something!".
"Nope". He replied flatly.
Oh boy...
"You know what, forget what I said...". I began to flip through the pages of more Grimoires in search of something that could catch my eye and attention.
"It's worth forgetting that guy, that's my advice". He suggested, with a small smile, snatching the book from my hands and replacing it with another.
"Okay asking you for an advice was pretty much a bad idea". I couldn't help but laugh a bit at his suggestion. Me? Forget Xander? That's like 100% epic failure! Does he think feelings are like bubble gums that you could toss away easily after use?
"Then stop blabbing in my ears and ask him out already!". He murmured. "Is that so hard?!".
"Ask him out?! Do you know the position he's holding and the position I'm holding! That's more impossible...he likes girls more of his level, girls that has confidence, girls that has authority, girls that has beauty, girls that has...umm...you know...".
He tilted his head curiously as I hung up in my sentence and rolled his eyes when I demonstrated my point.
"Jeez I get it, you can stop making those awkward shapes in front of your bust now..". He covered his face with his palms with a hiss. "And you said you two aren't like that". He further said with sarcasm.
"So what do I do, Minuet?". I ignored his usual sarcastic words.
"You mean, what do you do? I'm a demon...a guardian...not some kind of plastic surgeon".
"That's a great idea! I need surgery at once!".
"Wait! that's not what-". He stopped with an exasperated sigh. "There's no use talking, she won't even listen".
"But plastic surgery is expensive! Besides, my parents won't let me have a penny, not to talk of giving me permission". I groaned in frustration and gasped when something clicked in my mind. "Yes yes yes! I know the answer!".
"What? Don't let what I said get into you head, you maniac". He groaned as I tapped my chin with a bright smile.
"I do have an idea...but I'm the worst at bringing up good ideas and doing them, so don't expect perfection from my mouth. I'm guessing that's the only way though because-".
"Don't be a headache and spit it out already before my headaches get any worse". He cut in with a low growl.
I walked besides him and pressed my lips against his ears, whispering my plans carefully, so he could savor every bit of it slowly. Honestly, that took like twenty minutes of explanation, and by the time I was done he looked like he had woken up from a horrific nightmare. His face was pale and hollow.
"Are you sure?". His voice went dangerously serious. "Is this necessary?".
"Just because Cinderella used magic to seduce her prince charming doesn't mean you should try that as well". He gave me a strict look. All the playfulness and friendliness in his voice had now vanished into the thin air. "Magic is not to be trusted in cases like this".
"But it worked out for her...there's no way he'd like me for me Minuet". I wanted to get Xander so badly, even if it means coming back home by twelve midnight sharp. "It's the same magic we practise by the way".
"So by removing me out of the equation, we can replace that subtracted one with another. I'm so gonna do it with or without you, mister frustrator".
Minuet just sighed deeply, rubbing his head with one hand, and his other holding my musical box.
"Again Isabelle, are you really sure about this?". He gave me a concerned look. "It won't be you he'd be dating...".
"Yea...". My answer came out quite unsure and blunt. At least it's worth a try? "I know...".
"Isabelle...".
"Yes! I'm sure Minuet! Don't pity me...You think I'm probably pathetic? I can see pity written all over your face!".
"Pfft, I don't pity you at all". His voice was surprisingly soft and still. "Not even a bit".
"I just have no idea humans wished to hide their true form as well". He mumbled and handed me back my box, which I took confusingly and dropped back on the table. "It's just surprising".
Within a blink of the eye, he was back in his cat version and was already laying at the window sill. There was nothing but silence and the quiet sounds of chewing on some cookies. Holy shit! Where did those cookies even from?!
"I'm not hiding...I'm just not bringing out the real me at that time. You know, just like how you're in your cat form too...I mean you aren't really hiding, as that's just a spell, right?".
The black cat turned his head at me with a paw up in the air, and I'm thinking that's a yes, since the cat ended up nodding somehow.
"Me changing here and there depends on the mission I'm accomplishing". His voice startled me, especially as he was now back in his human version. "That's what familiars do".
Jezz, he needs to stop scaring me like that!
"That's so cool...". I cooed at him. "Familiars are awesome!".
"Yeah yeah I get it...". He rolled his eyes.
"So we're doing this?". I asked.
"Point of correction, it's 'you' are doing this...I'm just here to laugh myself out when it fails and backfires at you".
"H-hey! Don't wish me that! If that so happens, I'd kill you for pronouncing that in the first place!"
