Chapter Eighteen - Action speaks louder.
His head jerked to the side instantly, his unreal eyes roaming around the room tiredly before finally settling on my angry eyes. The angry look on his face quickly switched to that of a neutral one as soon as our eyes met. It was then I realised that he hasn't been looking at me the whole time. What the hell was he looking at then?
"So you finally awakened huh, good. We need to talk, young lady." His voice was as soft as the cottony-white wools that's neatly tucked in your pillows. I was too dazed to even talk back at him. Who knew that such a sweet voice could make me go silent at will. With a sarcastic chuckle, he continued, "Also, you can try calling the cops...I'm pretty sure they'd show up at this time of the night."
Slowly, he tilted his head back, making his strand of hairs fall backwards along his neckline, eventually exposing his shoulders, the graceful curve of his neck—and his two brilliant mesmerizing emerald eyes that kept staring straight into my eyes from under his long thick dark eyelashes. I blinked away the sudden urge to run my hands through his hair and taste those glossy lips of his. What had suddenly come over me? I wondered in disbelief.
"Isabelle..." He whispered, folding his arms behind his back as a sigh left his lips. He closed his eyes for some seconds and opened them back again. I don't know whether it was me but his eyes didn't look any less predatory and intimidating. He looked like someone that could chop off your neck without having any regrets. Just the thought of him slitting someone's throat gives me the chills. But wait - how the hell did he know my name? I never told this freak my name! What's going on here?
I watched in disbelief his pupils slowly diminishing as if they were dwindling slits of darkness and greenness—just like a serpent—or a demon. No, just like a cat! But that's not normal! Did he perhaps get something in his eyes? I'm pretty sure he wore one of those expensive glowing contact lens to prank me, nice one buddy—your plan worked perfectly. His face lit up a bit, almost like he was about to laugh. The amused look that kept flashing across his face each time I said one or two things about his eyes started to build suspicions within me of him possibly reading my mind even though I know it's scientifically and humanly impossible. He can't just be standing in our front, in our house, and be savoring our pathetic state! Do something! a small voice rang at the back of my head, causing me to agree at once. It's either he starts it the old-fashioned way or he'd end up being nothing but my new punchball. After all, no one said I couldn't throw in my defensive skills.
"If you don't start talking—" I started, clutching my phone shakily as I walked back slowly. I just realized that the room was getting darker and darker by the moment. The candlelights were obviously not enough to light up the whole room. But I swore it did the first time, it's like my mind has started playing tricks on me again. "I'd call my parents...freak!" I got hold of the objects nearest to me and kept throwing them towards his direction, hoping that he'd either run away—or eventually get pinned down somehow—but he ended up proving me wrong surprisingly. It seemed like the objects' weights were that of a feather as he didn't seem bothered at all.
I frowned deeply as he managed to sidestep every single object I laid my hands on. What the hell happened to all months of experience? Did I suddenly gain a pound or something? The last objects—which happened to be dad's old-time neon lamp and mum's six year old expensive vase—he got hold of the two with ease and placed them back on their respective shelves. How was he so fast in catching everything? I wondered. I was hoping with all these noises someone would hear what's happening here. Well, I'm lucky his moves weren't as bad as a dying goose, I'd have ended up in 'serious' combos of trouble for breaking my parents' favorite stuffs. The mysterious charming freak just rolled his eyes with an annoyed sigh, crossing his arms—like he was bored of the whole show. He shouldn't be because I'm just getting started.
"You just have to be wholly clueless in everything, don't you?" He gritted through his teeth, looking straight into my eyes through my reflection on the vase. "-you little oblivious dweeb." I gasped and clenched my fists at the sudden harsh words. Calling me this makes me remember the ugly names others calls me and it hurts a bit. He dares call me that again and see what happens next!
Before I could take the matter any further, he started lurking at the sharp edges of the casket, placing one foot after the other as though he was walking on an invisible plank. It looked like he was finding a perfect spot to stand on or walk for a while. That action pretty much shut me up, not to mention the sudden mischief that just twinkled within his unreal eyes. Huh? What's this freak up to now? He finally came to a stop and stood there briefly before splaying out his arms. My eyes widened at this guy's craziness. Was he trying to get himself killed? He could lose his balance and fall. He looked at me from the corner of his eyes and wore a small smile. Before I could say a word, he had already lunged himself from the casket towards the ground. My body went cold at how I was going to end up seeing a very terrible outcome from this. I closed my eyes immediately and remained silent to hear the expected earsplitting scream but I didn't.
I was expecting him to have fallen down headlong or something—but to my greatest surprise, his feet landed softly on the drugget one after the other, sinking in deeply before he straightened up. And if I'm correct, that coffin was at least six feets high or even more than that. How on earth did he survive such a fall without breaking a bone? Is he some kind of skilled assassin now?
"Well then, actions speaks louder than words..." The mysterious guy's lips parted in a tiny yawn—as his back arched—arms rising as if to catch the lights. He rubbed his eyes with the back of his palms. He sounded tired and looked like he wanted this to be done with quickly.
He turned to the window, staring at the distant cities and skies. His mind seems to be wandering elsewhere. What could be the matter? I noticed he had always been looking elsewhere. Wait, I shouldn't care. I just need an accurate explanation of this whole setting or I call the police. End of the case.
He turned back to me with a frown, "It's been a long day for us, so...I guess I'd just make this very brief." He began to drum his fingers against the window sill impatiently.
"You better do..." I stared at him in skepticism and coldness—waiting and listening patiently since I'm obviously not the perfect fighting machine for his size.
"She only told me to wait for the right time—" He explained, lowering his darkened eyes. "-to show up and guide you through. Besides, you're the one who summoned me in the first place, why are you being so... annoying."
She?
Goddess, which mission has he been sent to do to me now?
Kill me?
"If you're insinuating I'm here to do anything against your will, so be it..." He mused. "But on the other hand, I could...if you bother me or tempt me to." He stopped with the drumming thingy. "I won't hesitate to do that, Isabelle."
But before I could say anything, he looked at me with a serious face, one that scared the shit outta me. "You've a choice in this game...follow me to her secret hideout, or don't..."
I walked back—suddenly feeling insecure—as he released his grip on the rail and walked towards me. "D-don't come any closer...y-you freak!" I placed my hands on my chest to stop myself from shaking visibly as he had me cornered. There was no room for escape as the cold bars pressed against my back. He lowered his darkened eyes to me briefly, lifting up his sleeves like to show off something—or at least a clue.
But there was nothing.
"What are you—".
"Don't talk and just look harder."
The moment I fixed my eyes back on his pale skin, I noticed his skin was no longer pale but light blue. No way! How did he do that? That was...so fast? But wait - human skins don't turn blue at all, well except that's a skin disease - but no! The skins only do that once the heart stops and when it's owner's dead. I've so many questions but not even a single answer to them. A small sharp sound from my front made me snap out of my jumbled thoughts at once.
Oddly, his skin began to glow; a dim trail of light moved from the upper region of his body to his exposed wrist, increasing it's intensity as the guy focused his attention on whatever was happening. Was he the one that caused this to happen? I had no idea.
My eyes almost popped out when the bright light slowly faded away, leaving behind the unmistakable tattoo of the name 'Minuet' on his left arm.
W-what?
I...I don't understand.
Without any warning, his body made a little crackling noise—like the sound of thousands of bones snapping at the same time, and before I could scream for help—he had collapsed into a little ball of fur. A little ball of black fur.
The cat then stole a glance at me with it's two large green shimmering emerald eyes. It crouched a little and wagged it's tail to the side as I examined it's features.
Finally, some parts of the crazy puzzles were put together. It was that cat I had met some months ago...
The very one grandma said I should follow.
"Y-you are a cat?!" I couldn't stop myself from screaming the obvious truth. This was just too much for me to stand. I had to even cover my mouth from screaming any further. "Are you...wait...you are...you are my Minuet?"
The cat rolled it's eyes at the quite obvious answer. His action was surprisingly a human expression. It's quite funny that a cat could do that, I literally had no idea.
I knew something about that cat was off.
So... it's a werecat?
Half human and half cat?
I think I'm dreaming again.
Wonder what happens next then, huh?
He flies?!
Minuet's POV
I had no idea that having teenagers around me could be so hectic and frustrating. I think I underestimated this brunette nerd too much. I need some time to cool down before I can deal with her madness again. I closed my eyes briefly and allowed the small tingling sensation to take over my body swiftly.
As I teleported my mind into the mystical garden, a familiar aura of glamour filled the air. Recognising that enchanting aura, I shifted into the human form swiftly, running my eyes through the darkness to see her.
"Make sure you guide her through—" The voice came out as gentle as the evening breeze against my ears. "-Minuet."
Hearing a name from Alexis' mouth startled me vigorously. Never have she called me by my name, nickname or anything thing at all. We were...never on good terms.
"Seriously?! I've done part of my oath." I frowned and turned to the translucent ghostly figure. "Did you've to leave the spirit world for this? Seriously? Aren't you supposed to be part of the underworld watchers or stalkers? Why are you here? I've got this, okay?"
She didn't answer me right away. She suddenly chuckled and appeared by my side swiftly. "I can leave anything just to be my child's side Minuet, are you going to stop me from doing that?" She asked in a firm tone, closing her eyes slowly to savour the gentle breeze that was blowing in the garden.
"Well, when will you ever stop being determined?" I mumbled, taken back by the determination in her actions. She was that kind of woman that'd never be at ease until her loved ones get the best of they truly deserved, be it good or bad. She would do anything to please anyone, well, not really 'everyone' but those she knew very well.
Although I've been held captive by her for a quite long time now, I wasn't restricted from leaving whenever I felt like. The thought of running away again and falling into their ambushes once more crossed my mind, only sending chills all over me. It's better I remain in captive than let those scums get an advantage of my state.
"Make sure she follows you by all means." She continued, shifting her stare to the mesmerizing new moon in the skylight. "Don't be hard on her either. She's a newbie in all these and doesn't even know what is going on. Don't scare her away or she'd never want to know the truth." She turned back at me with a knowing look.
I nodded. "For how long would everything be kept a secret? A week? A month - a year?" I questioned.
"Don't reveal anything to her yet, not now, it's not the right time. Don't talk about anything related to her past life please—" Her eyebrows creased together with worry swirling in her glistening eyes. "-do not tell her who you really are and what y—"
"Fine, fine, fine. Stop worrying, it's not like I was going to say anything? I only asked, your secrets are safe with me." I placed a hand on her shoulder with a reassuring smile. She has done a lot for me obviously - accommodated and hidden my true form perfectly from humans, and most importantly, hunters. "Now I've got a dweeb to thrash." I winked.
I wore a small grin as she threw me a dirty look. Normally, I should be scared of what she'd do to me for that, but as she's gone, ha! Wait, she's a witch though, her ghost could still haunt me for sure. Why I'm I even thinking this?
"She'd be coming—" She whispered with a relieved smile. "-give her proper directions or you're done for." With that warning, she closed her eyes and flickered her arms in the air, creating a misty aura around us.
Within a second or two, she was gone, like she never was there.
"Minuet!!" A familiar voice rumbled through the air, making my shoulders to stiffen.
"Oh boy." I face palmed. "I did not sign up to babysit a female psycho."
