Chapter 9

She slept so well last night.

She woke, stretched, and headed to her bathroom. For a moment she remembered what helped give her a good night's sleep. Seeing all of Tristan!

He was in her bathroom, standing right where she was standing. She did not see a trace of him there, it was like he was never there. She did her business, washed her hands, brushed her teeth, and washed her face. She took off her pajamas to get ready for a shower.

Then she realized, he could easily walk in on her.

She checked to see if the door was locked. It was not. Cracking the door open a bit, she peered inside to see if he was still asleep.

He was not there. His bed was perfectly made as if he never slept in it. It was nearly eleven in the afternoon already, he seemed to be an early riser.

She closed the door, locked it, and finished preparing for the day. All refreshed and ready for another boring day at home, she grabbed her phone and headed downstairs. She saw a text from her sister that she would be out all Saturday hanging with some friends and perhaps sleeping over.

Tristan was nowhere to be found. She headed to the basement to listen for signs he was there but heard nothing. She rushed over to the window in front of the house, looking out to see if his truck was parked in front. Nope.

No one asked her if she wanted to do anything since she had no car to get around. She was supposed to go to Forest Park today and visit one of the museums, but now she did not feel up to going all by herself.

She made a bowl of cereal, got comfortable on the sofa, remote control in hand, and watched mindless television. After she finished eating, she lay sprawled out on the sofa glad to be doing nothing.

About an hour later, the alarm on her phone beeped letting her know someone was at the door. She grabbed it to see it was Tristan coming home. She sat up quickly, smoothed out her messy ponytail, then pretended she was relaxed and chilling as he walked into the living room.

He held a bag of greasy fast food, his head was down on his phone but when he noticed her, he looked up. "Hey."

"Hey." This was an awkward moment, her thinking of what she saw, and he probably felt some kind of way. "You umm...went out to get breakfast? I mean...lunch now."

"Naa," he stated. "I stayed over a...a friend's last night." She noticed the hesitation when he decided to call someone a friend. "You good?"

She nodded. What was she going to do with the fact that the boy was not into her but interested in other girls? She knew this, still in the back of her mind there was hope. Wishful thinking.

Tristan sat his bag on the dining room table and then walked off. At least he was here now and she would have some company. Then she heard the downstairs shower running.

He was taking a shower? Nosy her, crept up and tiptoed down the hall and peeped around the corner where the bathroom was located. The door was closed, there was no show to see.

Why was she a peeping Tom now?

He took a long shower, and when he came back, he had on shorts and a wrinkled T-shirt. He looked so sexy in that. He sat in the dining room, put earbuds in, and ate his food while he listened to music.

He was in a mood. Whatever girl he...slept with last night, maybe she did all the things with him. Lucky girl.

She did not realize she was staring at him eat till he glanced over at her. He must have food in his mouth because he licked both lips before turning back and finishing his burger in one last bite. He crumpled the wrapper, stuffed it in the bag, balled it all up, and left it on the table.

He stood and walked into the living room with her.

"What are you watching besides me?"

She felt so embarrassed.

"Criminal Minds."

"That shit will give you nightmares, lil bit." He grabbed the remote and sat on the couch beside her. "Let's watch Star."

She laughed. He did not seem like the type to want to watch anything like that. She loved the show and felt it was canceled for no reason. She let him cut her show off and turn on Star on Hulu.

"Don't knock my show. It's mad good. Three hot girls, singing and dancing. A masterpiece."

"Okay, whatever you say." Figured that's why he would like the show.

They started right on season one. She could tell Tristan liked the show as he talked out loud on parts. He seemed to like the Alexandra Crane character played by Ryan Destiny a lot, although he commented on the others as well. Her favorite of course was Star because she had sass and attitude, something she wished she was more like.

They were well into the season and having a nice time together. She did not feel awkward around him anymore. He was just a guy. Still a hot guy, but just a guy.

But why did it feel like he was her boyfriend and they were just hanging out? Her mind was going crazy places it should not have. He was just with some girl last night. He probably did things. Sure he'd showered and everything, but it was like she could smell his sexy.

She wanted to cuddle close to him and have him wrap his arms around her. Maybe neck like crazy teenagers.

She was a teenager. Well, for a few more months. Tristan was twenty-one and probably had done all the things with all of the girls back in high school.

"This is my favorite episode right here. All the crazy drama and some hot dancing."

He was sitting right next to her even though he could have put space in between them or sat on the other couch. It was like, maybe he felt something for her too. She could not be imagining things. She felt like there was a spark between them.

Saying nothing, she turned to look at him, right in that handsome face of his. Why did he have to look this good and not want her?

Those lips.

Kissable.

And before she knew what she was doing, she planted a kiss right on his lips. She could not believe her lips were pressed against his soft, juicy lips that felt like pillows or clouds in the sky and she felt as if she was floating in the air and her life was complete until...

He roughly pushed her away from him.

"Stop! What the hell are you doing?"

"I just...I just..."

"I don't do kissing. I definitely don't do kissing with you!" He jumped up from the couch. "You just stay on your side of the house, and I'll keep to mine."

He stormed away and headed toward the basement, then slammed the door shut.

Fresh tears formed in her eyes. She brushed them away quickly. She turned the TV off, stood, and left the room, heading upstairs so she could cry in peace.

Her first time kissing a boy was a disaster. What made her think it was okay to do that? He never showed he liked her in that way. She was reading something into things that were not there. She went into her room, closed and locked the door.

She would hide out in there for the rest of the summer.

She wished she had someone to talk to about all this. All her feelings and emotions over a boy. Zee would tell her to nip the yearnings in the bud, don't think of Tristan at all, or mock her. Her mother would be no help. Probably warn her that sex led to pregnancies and diseases and to never do it.

Talking to her father was absolutely out of the question!

She wished she was close enough to her aunt to discuss things.

She wished her GiGi was still around, maybe this was something they could talk about. She was old, but she tried to be a hip person. She was a high school teacher, she understood young people a lot.

"GiGi I miss you!"

She lay in her bed and cried for a bit. Tristan would tell Zee and Zee would give her the third degree about kissing a boy she forbade her to go after.

Then she remembered her grandmother's notebooks in the box next to her bed. She reached over and grabbed one. Flipping open the pages she saw they were all numbered and dated. This one was twelve.

She looked through to see if she could find the first one. Once she found it, she lay back in her bed and opened it up to read

Dear Diary,

Today I met the love of my life!

Sure, I'm only fifteen and he's seventeen, but gosh darn, he is the one. When I saw him in the hall today, and he smiled and I smiled, I knew then. I was going to marry him and have lots of babies.

I may have to fight the other girls off, but I will do whatever it takes. He noticed me, and now, the game is one. Now to make him all mine.

Gregory Daniels, wait till you meet Mildred Sullivan. We will never be apart again.

Wait! Johanna read the first passage again. That was her grandmother talking about her grandfather. She had no idea about how her grandmother and grandfather met. Her GiGi never talked much about her husband. He was gone before she was even born so she never knew him. This was interesting.

She read the next passage.

Dear Diary,

Gregory thinks he likes another girl, well, he is wrong and does not know it. Poor thing. Little Florence Simpson, thinks she's better than all the other girls in school because she has big breasts and long hair.

Once I have another growth spurt, I know I will have bigger breasts. Momma has them. She says just wait till I get older everything will come in and thicken up. I will not be this skinny little thing boys look away from for the likes of Florence Simpson. I just keep eating beans and cornbread momma makes and that will put some weight on me.

Momma says the way to a man's heart is to feed him good food. To get my future husband, I think that is just what I will do. Take him some of momma's good cooking and then just wait and see. I just know we're meant to be, he will see too.

Johanna smiled and giggled at that. Her grandmother was something, and now she had something to do to tide her days over
