Chapter 11: Rise of the Old Masters

Dedicated to Dolly-The-Sheep

A short time after helping the Spectres steal the T-7 disruptors, Captain Kyra Kryze-Kenobi rendezvoused with the Ghost above Lothal, Captain Hera Syndulla having asked for her assistance on a mission to rescue Jedi Master Luminara Unduli from an Imperial prison on Stygeon Prime. Two ships were required for the mission; Kyra would transport the rebels to and from the Spire – as the prison was known – then meet up with Hera, who would be waiting in a nearby system to dock with the Phantom. Because the starfighter was registered to Krystal Organa, Hera had equipped Kyra's ship with the same static jammers that she used on the Ghost, allowing Kryze to aid the rebels on their missions without endangering the Organas or herself.

Once the Ghost had made the jump to lightspeed, the crew gathered on the bridge as Sabine Wren pulled up a hologram of the prison.

"Welcome to the Spire on Stygeon Prime, the only Imperial detainment facility in the Stygeon system. And it's impregnable," Sabine claimed. "We have never faced anything like this. It's a real work of art. Blast proof, ray shielded, protected by anti-ship weapons, TIE fighters, plus short- and long-range scanners."

When Hera stated that the Ghost could fool the scanners, Sabine replied, "Maybe. But that just leaves an army of troopers and guard posts on all the walls. Look, even if we get into this beauty, the hard part's getting out. 'Cause, you know, it's a prison."

"Well, what about going in low and sneaking onto this landing platform?" Ezra Bridger suggested.

Kyra – now wearing her Mandalorian armor – shook her head, "The platform has a heavy trooper presence and reinforced blast doors. Impossible to get in or out that way."

The rebels fell silent as they surveyed the map, and after a moment, Kanan Jarrus pointed to another small platform.

He placed a red dot on the platform and said, "There's only room for a couple guards. We take them down, make our way to the upper-level isolation cells, free Luminara and come back out the way we came in."

Chopper beeped incredulously as Sabine agreed, "Yeah, you'd have to be crazy to try that lousy plan."

Kanan smirked as they emerged from hyperspace, "Let's hope the Empire thinks so, too."

Once the Ghost had entered the upper atmosphere of Stygeon Prime, Kyra and the others boarded the Phantom while Hera and Chopper remained onboard the light freighter. Kyra settled into the pilot's seat while Kanan, Garazeb Orrelios, Sabine, and Ezra sat in the seats behind her, which could be folded away to make more room for cargo.

When Chopper complained about being left behind, Zeb chuckled and said, "Oh, I'm sorry, Chop. We just don't need your damaged logic circuits on this one."

The Phantom detached from the Ghost and Kyra unfolded the starfighter's wings as the ship descended through the thick clouds of Stygeon Prime. The Spire quickly came into view and Kyra informed the Spectres that they were thirty seconds away from the drop-off zone, wishing them as she lowered the main ramp. She flew over the guarded platform and watched as Kanan leaped out of the ship, quietly handling the two stormtroopers because stealth was key to their mission. Unfortunately, Ezra Bridger decided to try the same technique as his master, screaming the entire way down and rolling across the platform, only coming to a halt when he slammed into the blast door.

As four troopers came to back up their fallen comrades, Sabine and Garazeb Orrelios jumped from the Phantom and helped defeat the reinforcements. Once she had been given the all clear, Kyra circled back around and attached the Phantom to the side of the Spire, directly underneath the platform. Since the starfighter was vertically suspended, Kyra hung in her chair, shivering because – besides the jamming signal – she had shut the power down to avoid being detected by Imperial scanners. Now all she could do was wait. After several minutes, the silence inside the Phantom was broken when the starfighter's sensors beeped, informing Kyra that an object was approaching the ship.

She peered out of the viewport, fearing that an Imperial TIE fighter had spotted the Phantom. Instead, a creature raced past the starfighter before circling back around and hovering in front of the cockpit. Kyra recognized the large-winged creature with a stinger-like tail as a tibidee, and when two more creatures joined the first, they began rubbing their flat noses against the ship. Kyra cursed as the Phantom rocked and threatened to detach from the Spire.

When Hera Syndulla asked if everything was all right, Kyra quietly answered, "Sabine's jammer is operating on the same frequency as these creatures. It's sending out a...mating call. These lovebirds are attracting too much attention."

Kyra might have laughed under normal circumstances but considering that she was attached to the most dangerous – and, should she be caught, inescapable – Imperial prison, she was in no mood to mess around with the flirtatious tibidee. Reluctantly, Kyra pulled away from the Spire with the tibidee in tow, hoping the Spectres would not need her anytime soon.

Nearly ten minutes later, Sabine Wren said, "Spectre-Five to Phantom. We're on the landing deck, ready for pickup."

"On my way, Spectre-Five," Kyra replied as she descended through the upper atmosphere. "And I'm bringing the fleet."

Kyra dove towards the landing platform and the six tibidee followed her, the giant creatures knocking several squadrons of stormtroopers off their feet as they opened fire. Kyra returned fire and destroyed one of the stationary TIE fighters on the landing deck, dodging plasma bolts shot from the nearby gun turrets. She turned in her seat as she lowered the main ramp, her eyes widening when she saw the figure that was pursuing the Spectres. The Grand Inquisitor appeared to be very real as he threw his double-bladed lightsaber towards the Phantom, but that was impossible. Kyra had watched Reva Sevander stab him in the chest four years ago.

Kanan ignited his own lightsaber and blocked the spinning weapon, which quickly returned to the hands of its master as the Spectres boarded the Phantom. When Kyra noticed that Jedi Master Luminara Unduli was not with the rebels, she feared the worst, the look on Kanan's face confirming her suspicion.

After a moment, Kyra quietly admitted, "I didn't realize the Grand Inquisitor was still alive. Four years ago, on Daiyu, he was stabbed by the Third Sister, who later defected from the Empire. I should have sensed him. He exudes dark energy."

"Don't beat yourself up," Kanan Jarrus replied. "Those that work in the shadows often know how to conceal themselves in darkness."

Kyra sighed and nodded as she slid the Phantom into the docking bay on the Ghost. Above the emerald and sapphire gem of Lothal, Kyra Kryze-Kenobi bid farewell to the Spectres and set off into the obsidian void of space.
