    Her future was already imperfectly written. Ten years from now, twenty years from now, she'd still be working at the Country Club—serving the obscenely wealthy members, their polished trophy wives, and maybe even their ungrateful little brats. There was little to no prospect for her life to turn out any differently.

    How could it?

    Orphaned at age ten, Wren was passed from one foster home to the next, never staying long enough to call any place home. With no known relatives, and none who ever came forward, she learned early on that family was a concept she could never rely on. By the time she turned eighteen, no foster family was willing to take in an adult, so she fought to build a life on her own. Now, the closest thing she had to family was her co-worker Lola—and her cat. Nothing more, nothing less.

    At twenty-two, Wren relied solely on herself to survive. She had been working at the Country Club for roughly five years now. She'd thought about quitting, maybe even moving to a new town, but her meager paycheck made it impossible. So, she kept going, scraping by to pay rent and keep herself afloat.

    Then, by some miracle, everything changed the day she met Stella Cameron, the six-year-old daughter of Kildare Island's richest businessman.
