xxxviii. crossing the line

They drove for a few minutes before JJ stopped the van in front of a land that seemed abandoned. Isis pulled a face as she looked at JJ, unsure about the following events.

"Welcome to Crackhead Wasteland," winced Sarah.

"I don't know about this, man," said Pope.

"Me neither," supported Isis, looking at her boyfriend. But he ignored her.

John B sighed deeply. "Dude, why are we at Barry's?" he asked, leaning between the front seats.

"This'll only take a second," replied JJ as he got out of the van.

Isis didn't hesitate before she followed him.

"Where you going??" inquired John B.

"Yo soy justicia," answered JJ.

"Wait!" said Isis.

She turned to her friends who were staring at her with a weary look, and shrugged.

When she joined JJ inside, he was going through every closet in the room.

"JJ? Hey, what are you doing??"

"Don't worry," he replied.

"Of course I'm worried!" she shouted, suddenly tensed. "You are making a mess! And I won't leave you alone until you tell me what's happening in your head," she added, crossing her arms on her chest.

JJ let out a sigh and stood up in front of her. But his eyes were staring behind her.

"So what's your plan, slick?" asked John B's voice as he walked in.

She felt a bit relieved to have him by her side.

"Well, as thou hath stealeth from us, we shall stealeth from ye," JJ replied as he got back to his work.

"Yeah, that kinda got lost in translation," said John B.

"An eye for an eye, John B."

"Yeah, that's great, JJ," he replied as he put himself in front of him. "But what happens after you rob a drug dealer, huh? He knows who we are!!"

JJ scoffed and walked out, going in the next room. "I'm not scared of this guy."

"JJ, don't--"

"Oh, come on," Isis grunted following him. "JJ! Cut the bullshit, I'm begging you. This isn't the right thing to do!"

"But maybe it is."

"No it isn't. And you know it. So now, come to your senses, and let's leave this place."

"There we go," he muttured as he found a huge sport bag full of money. "Y'know, Izzy, of all of you, I really didn't think you'd be the one to try and stop me."

Isis scoffed. "And what is that supposed to mean??"

"Don't know," he shrugged. "It's up to you."

She frowned. "You're such a pain in the ass, JJ. I- I can't even--"

"You can't what??" he asked with anger, his tensed face turned to hers. "Go ahead, tell me."

Isis stared at him with wrath in her eyes, her lips pursed.

JJ chuckled bitterly. "That's what I thought."

"What are you talking about??" frowned Isis.

"The one time I need you, you let me down! You're letting me down, like everyone else."

"Excuse me?! Nobody's letting you down! Least of all me. But you're crossing the line. You're going too far in this shit! So put that down, and come with me."

JJ looked at her for a long time.

"You don't get to tell me what I have to do. And I'm taking this," he said lifting the bag. "Whether you like it or not."

He walked past her and left the room, leaving her in shock. Then, she heard him arguing with John B and joined them.

"Aren't you tired of being messed with?"

"That's not the point, JJ."

"Cause I am."

"Listen to us!" Isis insisted. "This is bullshit!"

"I don't care!!" he yelled back.

"You should!" John B snapped.

But JJ wasn't listening anymore, and walked out. Isis and John B shared a look. The latter put a hand on her shoulder.

"Don't worry."

"I can't."

They joined the others outside. JJ was showing out his loot.

"So that's what we're doing now? We're robbing drug dealers?" asked Kie, frowning.

"This Barry guy's gonna find out," added Sarah. "And he's gonna come after us."

"She's right!" supported Isis.

"This is not the time to start wilin' out," said Pope.

"How'd you guys like havin' a gun pulled at you??" he asked, tensed up.

"Relax," said John B trying to hold him back.

"He had it right on Isis' face! He was about to shoot at her, how do you expect me to react??"

She scoffed. "Please, don't say you're doing this for me."

"I am," he said turning to her. "For the most part. I thought you'd be with me."

She clenched her jaw, and softly shook her head. "I can't," she said with tears in her voice.

They stared at each other for a few seconds, before John B let out a sigh.

"Look. We've gotta get the gold, okay? Just give me that shit, we're putting it back!"

But JJ grabbed his collar and slammed him against the van. Isis stepped forward but Pope held her back.

John B didn't blink an eye. "Do you feel like a tough guy? Huh? What are you gonna do when he comes for us? When he comes for Isis??"

"We punch him in the throat," JJ replied between his teeth.

"Yeah, good fuckin' idea JJ."

"I'm not putting it back," he said firmly, before settling in the van. "You guys getting in or what?"

But nobody moved. Isis stared at the floor, too weak to face his look. He stood up again in front of them.

"What?"

"We're sick of your shit," replied John B.

"Oh, my shit?"

"Yeah, your shit."

"You pulling guns on people shit!" added Kie.

"You acting like a freaking maniac--"

"Okay, Pope, I took the fall for you, man!" he shouted with a shaky voice. "Know how much I owe because of you?"

"I'm gonna pay you back! And I didn't even ask you to do that!"

"I just did!! Pay it back. Right here, right now, by myself."

Isis briefly looked up at him. "JJ..."

"You know what? That's exactly what I'm gonna do. Go off, by myself."

Isis held back a sigh. "JJ, please... There's still time to--"

"What are you doing?" he asked her as he took the bag. "Are you coming with me, or not?"

"I- I--"

She hesitated for a while, giving unassured looks to the others. Then, she clenched her jaw and locked her eyes to his.

"No," she said in a trembling voice. "I can't."

He looked like he was trying to hide his pain, but she saw it. And it broke her heart. But when he walked away, she didn't move. And as he disappeared from her sight, she burst into tears.

John B took her in his arms, and held her tight.

"It's gonna be okay," he soothed.

"I-- I can't... This is so messed up," she sobbed.

"... I know. But we're here with you, Iz. We're not letting you go."

"But we're letting him down," she whispered. "And this is so much worse."
