Isis didn't know why she didn't follow JJ. Because he was all she could think about. Even when they settled in Kie's restaurant, she just had his face in mind. John B sighed and stroked her arm.
"Look, he'll come around, all right?" he tried to soothe her. "It's... He's doing a JJ thing."
Isis briefly shook her head. "No. It's a lot worse this time. I think we really hurt him," she said in a broken voice.
Kiara shared a look with her. "You think he'll go home?"
Isis pursed her lips, tears filling her eyes.
"There's about a zero percent chance that JJ goes home," replied Pope, staring out the window.
Isis let out a deep sigh, and took her face in her hands.
"You okay?" she heard John B ask Sarah.
"Yeah," she nodded. "Are you?"
"I mean, I'm in one piece, so..."
Isis held back a grunt. She didn't care about them right now. She didn't care about anyone except JJ. Cause they were all here, and he was not. Cause he was alone, and they were not. So fuck Sarah, and fuck John B. JJ was on his own, she wasn't with him, and it hurt so much she thought it would never end.
Kiara was the only one who noticed her quiet tears, and took her hand. Isis gave her a half of a smile.
"I think I-- I'll just go home," she then said in a low voice. "Nothing against you guys, I just need to be alone for the night."
They all nodded.
"See you tomorrow?" asked Kie, looking worried for her friend.
Isis shrugged. "Yeah," she said, unsure.
"Do you want a ride home?" asked John B.
She shook her head. "No, that's fine. I'll walk."
"You sure?"
"Yeah, don't worry. See you later."
She left the Wreck with nothing but her hands in her pockets, and JJ's hoodie knotted around her shoulders.
She walked for about twenty minutes before arriving in front of her house. She had barely come inside when her mother ran over to hug her.
"Huh, hello? Are you okay?"
"I'm so sorry, sweetheart," sobbed Lana. "I couldn't stop thinking about the other day, I didn't want you to leave when you were angry at me... I never would have forgiven myself if anything had happened to you..."
"Mom, I'm fine," said Isis. "Okay? Everything's fine."
"No, it's not. It's not fine at all..."
"What do you mean?" Isis frowned.
Lana let out a deep sigh.
"I should've told you a while ago..."
Isis felt her heart beat louder. Finally, she was going to learn the truth. She sat with her mom, and a cup of tea.
"Remember when Big John disappeared?"
Isis nodded.
"You were sick that day, so I came home early. But you were sleeping, and I found Scooter talking to Ward Cameron. He kept saying it was an accident, that he didn't want to hurt him..."
Isis felt a shiver down her spine. "Was he talking about Big John?" she asked, shaking.
Lana replied with a nod. Isis turned pale, and took her face in her hands.
"He killed him?" she asked in a toneless voice.
"I-- I don't know, sweetheart..."
"Yes, you do, Mom! I know you do. Tell me, please," begged Isis. "John B is my friend. He needs to know."
Lana seemed to hesitate. She pursed her lips, and sighed.
"All right," she said. "Ward told your dad that he was out on the open water with Big John that morning. Apparently, Big John had something to tell him. He'd found it."
"What? The Royal Merchant?"
Lana nodded, and Isis' eyes went wide.
"Oh, my," she let out in a breathe.
"A-and, it seemed like he wanted to change the deal he made with Ward."
"What deal?" frowned Isis.
"From what I understood, Ward gave him supplies he used to find the wreck. Boats, money and equipment. But Big John did all the research, and wanted to give Ward twenty percent of the gold. They had a fight, and it went bad. John hurt the back of his head flipping over."
Isis stopped breathing.
"Ward threw his body into the sea, and sunk the boat," explained Lana.
"Oh my fucking God," whispered Isis, in shock.
"He asked your father's help to find the gold. He had Big John's map. So that's what they did during nine months."
"That's why Dad always disappeared? He was looking for that fucking gold?" asked Isis, afflicted.
"Yes. And when Agatha showed up, there was only one place they hadn't looked. So Ward sent Scooter out into that storm."
Isis started to feel tears running on her cheeks. She could barely see the face of her mother.
"I begged him not to go, but he said that Ward was worried the storm would wash everything away. But your dad did find something out there. Not what he expected."
"What did he find?" asked Isis through her tears.
"Big John's body. And his compass."
It didn't take long for Isis to understand. Big John wasn't dead when Ward tossed him into the sea. He had survived. Long enough to carve the clue on his compass. The compass that the Pogues found in Scooter's boat.
She burst into tears. Lana came close to her and hugged her tight.
"I'm so sorry, sweetheart."
"He killed him," said Isis, shaking. "He killed my dad. It's all his fault."
"Isis, sweetie, you can't--"
"He killed him!" shouted Isis, getting up. "Dad would never have died if it wasn't for him! He did this!! I'll kill him, Mom!"
"Sweetheart, he's dangerous! He--"
"I don't care!" cried Isis, sobbing. "He took Dad away from us, and he's still out there, living his life as if nothing had happened!! He can't get away with this! He just can't."
"Isis, I won't let you!" yelled Lana.
The young girl suddenly stopped.
"Sit down, please," asked her mother.
She obeyed.
"Ward is capable of the worst," resumed Lana. "I don't want you to go anywhere next to him. Did I make myself clear?"
Isis nodded, her lips pursed. Her mom took her hands over the table.
"I'm worried about you and your friends," said Lana. "You don't want to go too far with this. Please, tell me everything's good for you."
"Yes, Mom," lied Isis. "Everything's fine. I-- I just need to be with them."
Lana smiled. "You mean with JJ?"
Isis couldn't help but blush.
"You don't have to tell me everything, sweetheart," assured Lana. "Just-- be careful, okay?"
"Yes, Mom," chuckled Isis. "Don't worry."
They shared a hug.
"Mom?"
"Yes, sweetheart?"
"I have to tell John B," winced Isis. "He needs to know, and... I can't keep it to myself."
"Of course," replied Lana.
"I think I'll need some time with my friends, too."
Though she seemed sad, Isis' mother nodded.
"Take care of each other," she said softly as she hugged her one more time.
"Always," said Isis.
And she meant it.
