"This is ridiculous," hissed Sarah as she took off her clothes, only keeping her bikini on.
"Well, I would rather drown than stay here with you, so..." replied Kie, doing the same.
Isis shook her head and walked to the underground cabin. The boys had settled mattress and sleeping bags. There was food in a corner of the room, and next to it, she saw JJ's hoodie. And she smiled. 'Cause she really loved this dumbass.
Going through the hoodie's pocket, she got her fingers on the blunt. She then heard a scream outside and came up back on the deck.
"What's happening?"
"I got stung by a jellyfish! Shit!" squealed Sarah, in the water.
"Dramatic," sneered Kie.
"Please, you're not helping," scolded Isis. "Sarah, why did you dive??"
"I don't know! I don't want to stay here."
"Oh, cause you think we want to?" rebuked Kie.
"Kiara, come on!" sighed Isis as her friend rolled her eyes up. She handed her the hoodie. "Take this."
She leaned over the ladder and held her hands out to Sarah. "Come, sweetie." She winced seeing the wound on her side.
"Shit," whimpered the Kook.
"Well, you swam right into a man-o'-war," said Kie. "Don't know what you thought would happen."
"Thank you for your help!" lamented Sarah as Isis helped her getting on the deck.
The latter tried not to touch her wound as she sat on the floor.
"Shit!" hissed Sarah. "Ow..."
"Does it hurt?" teased Kie, getting a dark look from Isis.
"Hey, you know what they say... about curing jellyfish stings?" asked Sarah, panting.
"Mh, no, no way," cut off Kie.
"One of you have to pee on me."
"Okay," said Isis with a tense laughter. "We're definitly not going to pee on you, Sarah."
"But--"
"No, I'm sorry! I really want to help you, but there's no way I'm doing this."
They both looked up to Kie for help.
"I have a better idea," said the latter taking out the blunt.
"You can try," shrugged Isis. "Personnally, I saw some pickle crisps, downstairs, so I'd rather... stuff myself."
She went to get the snacks and joined them on the small platform behind the cabin. Sarah was coughing her guts out.
"First time?" teased Isis.
"Looks like it," replied Kie.
They chuckled. But still, it looked like unspoken things caused tension between them. Isis sat on the floor and started to eat crisps. Kie joined her and put her hand in the pack.
"This is awful," she said, her mouth full.
"It's not!" replied Isis. "These are the best crisps ever! The only ones I love, actually."
Kie giggled. They shared a smile. But there was a bit of sadness in their eyes.
"Hey, Sarah!" called then Isis. "Easy with the blunt, you're gonna make yourself sick."
"It's okay," she assured with a voice choked by the smoke.
"Yeah, sure," winced Kie.
It wasn't okay at all. Because Sarah quickly got high. Isis and Kie watched her respond to the drug before they decided it was enough and took the blunt away from her hand. Night fell around them, and Sarah was all giggly.
Isis went downstairs to put on JJ's hoodie and came back to the girls, sitting with them on the deck.
"Oh, Isis, you have to tell me!"
"Tell you what?"
"I was about to ask Kie, cause I was imagining her like this just now, and it was pretty funny."
"I'm scared, but go on, I guess."
"Would you ima-- would you rather... have nipples for eyes, or eyes for nipples?"
Isis gave Kie a questioning look.
"Skip it, she's having a bad trip," shrugged the latter with a weary face.
"Yeah, I can see that."
"Imagine if you get really old and your nipples--" resumed Sarah. "Your boobs get saggy, and your nipples, if they were your eyes, you could see if your shoes were untied."
Isis held back a sigh, and folded the hood down, laying on the deck.
"Is this like your first time smoking, or something?" asked Kie.
Sarah frowned, thinking hard.
"... No."
Isis chortled. She stared at the stars, and glanced once at Kie. She thought about all the times they watched the sky together, settled on Isis' small dock, in front of her house. Last year, it was common for Kie to come at Isis' place to sleep over. She missed this.
"Hey, Kiara..." Sarah said eventually.
"Oh, my God," cut off the concerned. "Enough of the 'Hey, Kiara' bullshit!"
Isis didn't blink an eye, waiting for it.
"Why'd you do it?" asked her friend.
"What did I do what?"
"We were best friends," resumed Kie. "We-- we stole beers from your dad's fridge, we watched movies together, we cried about boys... And the next thing I know, I'm watching your birthday party happen from Instagram."
Ouch, thought Isis. Not good.
"It was one party," defended Sarah.
"You invited everybody except me!" insisted Kie. "And then you told everybody I was the reason the party got busted."
All in the sudden, Isis understood why her friend was holding her grudge so bad against Sarah. She would've been the same.
"Okay, well, who else would've called the cops?"
"You never asked! You just let the rumor go that I was a rat. You were my best friend, and then you ghosted me, and I don't even know why! I mean, really, what did I do?" asked Kie with a trembling voice.
Isis just wanted to get to her and hold her tight, saying her she would never leave her. But she knew how hard they needed this discussion.
"You liked me," said Sarah.
"What?"
"When... people get... close to me," resumed Sarah. "I feel trapped. And... I bail. And then I blame them for it. I'm really sorry... and I miss you."
Isis felt tears filling her eyes. She didn't even know why.
"Do you think there's a chance that we could be okay again?" asked Sarah in a soft voice, hesitating.
"Honestly... I don't know."
Isis snuffled and wiped her nose on the back of her hand.
"Iz?" frowned Kie.
"No, don't mind me," she said, straightening up and wiping her cheeks. "Go on."
"Sis, are you crying?"
"Absolutly not. It's just-- some allergy. I don't know. But, I mean, I'm just gonna lay downstairs. Carry on without me."
She stood.
"Isis," called Kiara.
"What?"
They stared at each other. Kie invited her to join them with a nod. Isis smiled and agreed. She sat between them two, nestling close to them. Kie handed her the pickle crisps.
"Thanks."
She passed it on to Sarah, who served herself.
"Ew, this is awful," she said with a disgusted face.
Isis bursted out laughing with Kie. Sarah looked at them a frown.
"What did I say?"
"Nothing," giggled Isis, resting the back of her head on the rail. "Is there some of the blunt left?"
Kie handed it to her. Isis stuck it between her lips, letting her friend light it. She breathed the smoke in and out towards the sky.
"This looks like a real high school sleepover."
They stayed silent for a while. Isis finished the bit of the blunt there was still and shut her eyes.
"Hey, Isis," called Sarah.
"Yeah."
"Why-- How are you always that positive, and... and supportive?"
"Dude, I just cried like a baby in front of you," she chuckled.
"You know what I mean."
Isis sighed.
"I don't know. Guess I'm trying my best. Life is too short to have bad feelings all the time. But it happens, you know. Everyone feels bad one day or another. So when it happens, I just... evacuate. I cry, or I talk with someone. And it goes better, eventually. I'm here for the ones I care about, 'cause I know they'll be here for me at some point."
"But you were here for me too," replied Sarah.
Isis looked up at her.
"Guess I care about you too," she said softly.
They shared a smile. Suddenly, they heard Kie snuffle behind them. Isis turned to her and saw tears rolling on her cheeks.
"Hey, what's going on?" she asked.
"I-- I'm so sorry..." she said with a trembling voice. "I treated you like shit. You were just trying to make things good for us, and I was... horrible."
"Hey," soothed Isis wrapping an arm around her shoulders. "I'm not mad at you anymore. It's okay, I swear."
"I'm sorry," sobbed Kiara in her neck. "I love you."
"It's okay," repeated Isis. "I love you too."
They stayed this way for a while. Sarah ended up resting her head on Isis' shoulder, who pulled her closer in their embrace.
Then, they went to sleep downstairs. They all layed down next to each other. In the middle, Isis looked like a mediator between the two others.
"Hey, Sarah," called Kie.
"Hey, Kiara," she replied in a low, tired voice.
"Promise me that you won't bail on John B."
Isis turned to her.
"He's not just... some other guy," Kie added. "And he really, really likes you."
"I won't," answered Sarah after a second.
"Promise me," the other insisted.
"I promise."
Kie briefly shook her head and settled on her side with a sigh.
"Also, I'm sorry I called the cops."
Isis let out a chortle. "Oh my God."
"I knew it," said Sarah with a smile. "I knew it, you bitch!"
They all giggled together, close to tears.
"I told you!" laughed Sarah.
"You should've invited me!" replied Kie.
"So you called the cops?"
"Yes!"
They laughed louder.
"I'm so proud of you guys," was the last thing Isis said before the decided to sleep for real.
