Isis insisted to see her father's corpse. But it upset her even more. His face, usually so bright and cheerful, was pale, and his eyes no longer showed any emotion. But even that didn't make her realize that he was really gone. She couldn't accept.
She felt awfully guilty. If she'd worried last night, even a little bit, maybe he would still be there.
Lana had been out with the officers all day. John B offered to take Isis to the beach, so she wouldn't be alone. He knew she loved to watch and hear the waves. Totally wiped out, she didn't reply. She just couldn't speak. But he understood anyway. With the others, he drove her to the beach. She tried to resist, but not long. She knew deep down she needed it.
Fortunatly, the sea was really calm. The waves washed peacefully ashore on the sand, and brought to Isis an ephemeral feeling of serenity.
"I don't understand how he could've drowned."
"JJ," warned Kie.
"No, really! It's nonsense. Scooter was one of the best fishermen on this island. He was too experimented to just get caught in a storm."
"He would never have done it willingly," affirmed Isis in a shattered voice. "JJ's right, it's fucking nonsense."
She was upset. Everyone could feel it. She was sad, and angry at whoever, whatever had caused this. Angry at herself, perhaps. Even angry at this fucking storm that took her father away. He wasn't supposed to die now. It was impossible. He just couldn't leave them, her and her mom, alone. They still needed him, for a long, long time. It didn't feel right.
John B tightened his hug around her slight body. She started sobbing again, and hid her face in his neck. Afflicted, Kie took her hand to show her support.
Isis felt nearly good, at this moment. But it couldn't last forever. She had to go home with her mother. She didn't want to, though. But she had no choice.
Walking through her door made her sick. She forced herself to stay for the night, but she acted like a dead-alive. She couldn't hear her mom crying. She was just... sitting there, feeling empty. All night long. She might have slept a few hours, but it was all the same when she woke up. She didn't come out of her bed until sun got low.
She finally went back into the living room. As her eyes fell on her father's usual chair, she shed more tears.
She didn't even sit. She apologized to her mourning mother and went out. She needed to breathe. Her tears had dried and her cheeks were sticky, but she didn't care. She just needed air.
She spent two days like this. At some point, she began to stop crying. But her mother didn't. She was really upset.
And it got worse.
The morning of the second day, a boat docked in front of their house. If she first thought about JB and the others, Isis quickly noticed these guys were nothing like her friends.
"Can I help you?" she asked as they were approaching her.
"Sure you can," answered the tallest one.
Before she could see it coming, he grabbed her neck and took her inside, smashing the front door. Lana screamed. Isis struggled, but they pulled out guns and threatened her with.
"Where is the fucking compass?" asked the hairy one.
"I-I don't... I don't know, I swear..." sobbed Lana, shaking. "Let her go, please!"
"Not before you tell us where!" yelled the one holding Isis.
She was terrified. She couldn't say a word, her throat chocked. She wasn't even able to cry.
"P-please, let her go..." begged Lana. "She has nothing to do with it..."
He threw Isis on the ground.
"Where is the compass?? I know it's here!"
"N-no, it's not ! Scooter didn't have it, he never did..."
"Don't lie to me, you bitch!" he yelled. "We're gonna turn this shack over until we find it, so you better tell us!"
Isis stayed on the ground. One of the muggers kicked her hard in the stomach. She cashed in with a groan of pain, and curled into a ball, protecting her face with her arms. She heard Lana implore to leave them alone.
They started to turn the living room upside down, rummaging through all closets and containers. Isis finally dared to stand up, and got to her mom. They held tight, watching the men destroy their house.
"P-please, stop..." stammered Lana. "Please, there's nothing here...!"
The tallest grabbed her.
"Tell me where it is, or I'll fuck you up!" he yelled. "Do you hear me?? I'll sink you in the goddamn sea!!"
Isis jumped on him to keep him from hurting her mother, but he seized her and threw her against the table. Lana screamed.
"No, please! Isis!"
She tried to join her injured daughter, but the guy stood in front of her.
"I'll smash her if you don't tell me! Do you understand?? I'll kill your precious little girl!"
Isis was too knocked out to react. He hit her repeatedly, targeting her face and her tummy. She moaned loudly.
"Where the fuck is it, you bitch!!" the other yelled, slapping Lana.
She wailed.
"I- I didn't... P-please, stop...!"
They broke more things with anger, and finally decided to leave.
"Let's get the hell outta here," said one to the other.
They went out of the house, and ran to their boat. Isis stayed on the ground. Every part of her body was aching. She felt some tears cross her face. Lana got to her. They hugged tightly.
"My sweet baby... Oh my god..." she sobbed.
Isis was crying too. Tension back down, she realized that she had been extremely scared.
"Izzy?" called a voice at the door. "Oh, god..."
She recognized John B and JJ behing her clouded seeing. They immediatly knelt near them.
"Oh, damn..." said JJ, freaked out.
"Do you need a doctor?" asked John B. "Do I have to call the cops??"
"No, please, don't!..." declined Lana.
"That's not good..." panicked JJ.
Isis sat up straight, wiping her tears away, trying to calm her jerky breathing. JJ wrapped an arm around her shoulders.
"You shouldn't be here..." she sobbed.
"What do you know about these guys??" inquired John B.
"They... They were looking for something," replied Isis. "They talked about a compass. I don't know, I... I just..."
She couldn't finish.
"It's okay, honey, calm down," soothed JJ. "They're gone now."
"Does it have anything to do with this?" asked John B, pulling out a bronze compass. "Do you know anything about this?"
Lana's eyes widened in fright.
"This is my father's, and Scooter had it! Why?" inquired John B.
"Scooter didn't have it, okay? Don't tell anyone that you have that! You can't let them know that you have that!" sobbed Isis' mom.
"What do you know about the compass??" John B insisted.
"You've gotta get out of here!" begged Lana. "Go! Get out, please!"
JJ let go of Isis reluctantly, and left with John B.
