Chapter 13
The next morning was one of extreme tension for the twins and Hazel. It did not go unnoticed that Lorraine and Oscar had left at some point during the night and had yet to return. There was a pain in the twins' chests. They felt like they were to blame for their parent's disappearing act.
"Don't dwell on it now."Hazel had told them in a cheerful voice. "I'm sure that they will see sense and return very shortly." She put down a plate of toast near Tyrell in hopes that he would pick it up and begin to eat. "And if not then we can do something fun together! You two and I."
The care and compassion that Hazel put into her words made the twins smile in appreciation, though it didn't really meet their eyes. They had a fun night the evening before, playing with Ebony and laughing like they usually did. Though now any and all distractions had been taken away from them. They only had things to worry about and those things seemed to be mounting.
"Thanks nanna."Tyrell said softly as he picked at the toast which he had picked up and started to take small bites of. Tyrell's dark blonde hair was rather messy, reaching his shoulders like a lion's mane as his eyes were almost completely shut.
"Yeah that would be great. We haven't really had a nice day out together."Kelso's hair was nearly in the same state as Tyrell's but instead of her eyes being almost shut they were wide open, thanks ot the cup of coffee she had downed that morning. She knew that she was going to regret that later but for now it was what she was living off.
As this conversation was taking place a camper van pulled up in front of the house. Itw as Lorraine and Oscar who were just about ready to put their plan into action. The two of them quickly hopped out of the van and entered the house without knocking . "hello loves!" Lorraine said cheerfully as she entered the living room, causing everyone to jump in surprise.
"Hi mam, hi dad." The twins said once again in unison as they looked down towards their food. They supposed the happiness their mother was emitting was a good sign for them, though they didn't want to bring their own hopes up just to watch them crash.
"Oh dears such miserable faces!" Lorraine said as she walked over to her children, touching each of their cheeks. She ignored the strange looks she got off her children as she continued on "ah now you should have really brushed your hair bty now! And those clothes...fear not we'll get you some new clothes today, our treat!"
Even Oscar had to roll his eyes at this. Of course it was her treat , they're the ones who get money in order to look after the children. They didn't give it all to Hazel or to their cousins when they were in their care. They took a fair sum off it and then handed some money over for food and clothes along with other essentials the twins may need. Though that often meant that their cousin's needed to pitch in a lot.
"I mean ma that's lovely but...we're not dressed yet. " Kelso said which caused Lorraine's e cheeks to flash red once again. After that the two parents became silent as they ushered the children off the settee. The twins agreed in silence as they took their plates into the kitchen, it was still half-eaten but the sooner they got ready and got out of the door the sooner they'd be able to come home.
The two of them got dressed in some of their more 'presentable' and 'normal' attire, something that they thought their parents would approve of. Kelso wore a maroon dress with leggings underneath and she placed a maroon hairband into her hair. Tyrell had put on a maroon button up shirt on as well as a pair of faded jeans, he wore his hair in a ponytail so that it was out of his face.
Their parents didn't seem to notice how much effort they had put in as they just headed straight to the door. Hazel was coming along too, it was one of her first day's out in a while and the twins complimented her appearance. She had a white clip in her blonde hair and she wore a blue dress with a white cardigan in order to keep her warm.
Hazel was the light of hope in the twins' dark day. Every time their parents told them something patronizing or ordered them to do something Hazel would step in, claiming the children were old enough to make their own decisions and that there was no need to order them around. The twins had to negotiate a few things throughout the day but they ultimately lost most of their battles.
The five of them were sat in a fancy looking restaurant meets pub. This place was very well-known to the university students who lived close by but it wasn't a place the twins had visited much. The place had a lot of venues around the country and there was one rather close to where they used to live, they would only visit on extremely special occasions.
"So." Lorraine said as she sipped at the wine which was held tightly in her hand. "We know you've made some...relations here..." This caused the twins to tense up as Their mother mentioned Sylvester and Laylian. "How easy do you think it would be to..break that off?"
Oscar gave his wife a rather sharp jab in the ribs which caused her to nearly drop her glass. The twins stood up out of shock as they exclaimed "what?!" By now they were getting a lot of strange looks from others in the restaurant. Hazel was slowly reaching into her bag and had her fingers wrapped around their bus passes.
"Well clearly this place isn't healthy for you, so the only logical thing is to take you out of this place." Lorraine said in defence as she crossed her arms over her chest. Everyone at the table was staring at her in shock. Even Oscar had his mouth agape, he knew that she was going to ask their children to come with them but in which mannar, it astounded him.
Hazel quietly stood up "when were you going to tell me of this?" She hurried to put her phone into her bag as she walked over to the twins . "i am perfectly capable of looking after my grandchildren and they are perfectly happy here, something i have not seen them be in one second of your company. We are going home and you are moving your van before it knocks down that tree in front of our home."
Oscar and Lorraine were left speechless at the table whilst the three left the restaurant. The twins had small smiles of pride on their faces as Hazel had a look of determination on her face. She was going to make sure that the twins had the best time in her care, no matter the cost.
