Chapter 5: Meeting Mr. Wayne
Disclaimer: I don't own the Batman trilogy or any of the characters besides my lovely OC Izzy. Unfortunately Batman is owned by the company DC.
Previously: "...the driver asks for directions telling him the address he begins to make the waydown the many roads of Gotham towards the main street which joins onto the roadneeded to go to Wayne Enterprise."
Izzy's POV
"So Isabella. You're 22 years old, living here in Gotham. Is this internship going to be your full time 'job' if you get it or do you have another job?" Jessica looks up at me from my paper
"Well I work at a coffee shop 5 days a week but the hours vary. I applied for this internship because I want to do something productive with my life and career. And because I want to have a career that Wayne Enterprise specializes with, I thought it would be a great starting point." I finish with a smile.
"Why didn't you look into GCU? They have a degree for this course you are looking into?" she squints her eyes at me.
I swallow nervously "I do not have the income to afford to go to Gotham City University, ma'am."
She nods her had "well at Wayne Enterprise out internship programme is a helping start for someone young like you. And you never know when you might get a fulltime career here." She smiles kindly at me, I just nod my head with a smile "alright the tour! I will take you around the basic areas and give you a general outline of what is expected from one working here. Sound good?" another kind smile is flashed at me
"Yes that would be great." She stands up smoothing out her crisp straight pencil skirt and smooths down the front of her blouse. She fans her arm out in front of her ushering me to the door. I follow close to Jessica as she takes me around the offices and to different people and explains their role here.
"When you start here you are going to have to get rid of those." As she says this she touches one of my blue streaks that is resting on the frame of my black glasses
"Are they not suitable for the workplace being an intern?" I ask timidly she nods her head "okay, I'll change it this weekend." She pinches her lips together
"Better make that tomorrow, you start on Thursday." With that she walks off down the hall to her office. I'm left there standing awkwardly not knowing what to do. So I got the intern position, now what? I turn to hurry down the hall to go to the elevator but as I round the corner I bump into a hard chest. Spilling my paperwork on the ground as well as the other person's coffee on my black blazer and my white shirt underneath, I can feel the heat of the drink kiss my cold skin.
As I stumble to catch myself before I hit the ground. The person in front of me catches me around the waist. I look up and my heart stops. Bruce Wayne. Bruce Wayne, is holding onto my waist and is so close that I can smell his aftershave which I must say smelt very masculine. "I'm so sorry I wasn't watching where I was going –", Bruce Wayne stops me by smiling and looking down at me – even in my heels he is still taller –
"Are you alright?" his eyes kind and his smile genuine
"Yeah, I ah – I'm new!" I blurt out, mentally face palming myself
"Aha, I figured when you looked lost and confused when we bumped into each other." I let a nervous laugh escape my lips at the same time a laugh escape his. He laughed. Actually laughed and not at me but with me.
When he notices others looking at us, the arm around my waist disappears and we both bend down to collect the scattered papers on the ground as I brush my blazer down but notice that it is damp and the smell of caffeine is strong. Right. His coffee was spilled on me. I notice that the coffee didn't just get my blazer I can see on my once crisp white shirt that a brown stain is beginning to form.
I must have made a face because Bruce Wayne gets closer "sorry about that." He rubs the back of his neck nervously and I stifle a laugh. Seeing the playboy millionaire nervous will never happen again.
"It's okay, I'll just have to work harder to get it dry-cleaned." It's out before I can stop it. I just gave away to Bruce Wayne that I'm having financial difficulties.
"Well since I was the one who spilled the coffee on you it only makes sense for me to pay for your dry-cleaning." Bruce states, my eyes widen and I shake my head
"No. No I can't let you do that. It was my fault for not looking." I get up and quickly hurry away from prying eyes and Bruce Wayne, and out the door from Wayne Enterprise. I step onto the side walk, I go to lift my arm to call for a cab when the hairs on the back of my neck begin to bristle. That feeling you get when being watched.
I look over my shoulders and can't see anyone, but as I turn back around I see a black SUV parked in an alleyway as if taunting me. I look closer at the van but can't see in the windows it's too far away.
I quickly flail for a taxi and one stops just in front of me. I hop in and tell him the address, he parks on the curb out the front of my apartment. I give him $40 for the travel and quickly grab my handbag and rush in the lobby of the apartment building, putting in my floor number into the elevator. I wait inside until I hear the distinct 'ding' that the elevator has reached my floor.
I rush out of the confined space and rush towards my door, opening the door and quickly closing it again. This is going to become a new daily event of mine. I kick my heels off at the door and throw my handbag onto the side table and un-ceremoniously drop onto the couch resting my legs over the arm and draping an arm over my eyes.
Luna jumps onto my stomach and snuggles into me to get warm.
I jolt up from bed by the sound of my phone blaring Back in Black into my face. My head flies up in the air giving me whiplash in the process. I grab my phone groaning in pain 5pm flashes across the screen as well as an unknown number. I slide my thumb across to answer the call "hello?" I ask hesitantly as I get up from the couch and walk over to my kitchen.
There is no one on the other end just a breeze "hello? Who is this?" but again no one answers. "This isn't funny. Whoever is there just tell me what you want." There is no answer as I begin to pull the phone away from my ear I swear I hear a faint laugh and someone's voice.
But when I put it up to my ear all there is the dial tone. I press the red hang up button and place my phone onto the kitchen bench.
I'm going crazy.
Shaking my head after that strange scenario I turn to my coffee machine, placing my mug underneath adding a few spoonful's of chocolate powder, I wait for my hot heavenly bliss beverage - also known as a mocha, to finish pouring. I froth up some milk before adding the fluffy white mixture and the warmed milk into the mug, slowly I walk towards my window that overlooks the alleyways and the poor side of Gotham City.
As I sip at my drink, my body freezes. Narrowing my eyes I notice a familiar black SUV parked a few houses down on the side of the road, facing the window to my apartment. I slowly move the curtain aside, so I can peek, I don't see anyone in the car from the distance, but I just have that gut feeling that there is someone out there looking at me.
I have seen that SUV everyday outside at some point in my day, but it stood out to me when I first saw it, now I'm trying to work out where and when I saw that van? Those questions are answered for me when I see multiple people dressed all in black with sacks over their shoulders come rushing out of one of the shops down the road. In the middle of the commotion I see someone clad in a purple trench coat and a mop of green hair. Joker.
My mocha now forgotten, I quickly move away from my window allowing the curtain to fall back into place, I drop to the floor before crawling over to the other side of the window. I peek up and struggle to look out of the corner of the window where I see the goons pile into the SUV and the I see him look up to my window as if he can feel my gaze on him. I notice in the sky the Bat signal before I see the mask crusader come crashing to the ground straight into battle with the Joker.
I creep backwards to keep myself out of the windows view. If I can't see him he can't see me. My heart hammers as I listen to gunshots and shouts echoing in the background, I glance at my phone wondering if I should call the police to help Batman. But then those officers will be in harm's way and I wouldn't want to cause them to go into danger. With that thought in mind I go into my room and snuggle Luna to help calm my nerves. After what feels like 3 hours the noises of the fights have silenced, until police sirens cut through the air.
Curiosity gets the better of me and I creep towards the window again and see that the fight has ended and there is no sight of the Joker or Batman, but there are multiple goons rounded up with officers. Calmness settles within me knowing that the Joker isn't outside my apartment, I can now relax and enjoy what's left of my night.

A/N: So Bruce Wayne is finally introduced and how cute was his literal run in with Izzy I thought it would make him a little more relatable.
So Wayne Enterprises is technology based but also looks into alienware - what course should Izzy be wanting to study during the internship? I was thinking computer engineering or something along those lines or being Bruce's PA if she was looking into that area as a potential job.
