twenty-seven.

Betty Graham had her head leaned against her window of her moms car, the sound of her brothers arguing making her want to pull her hair out. It had been s few days since she had learned about it Susannah...and now she couldn't shake the guilt of knowing. She had continued to avoid the whole bunch, instead keeping to her room and watching rom coms for days. She was in an existential slump, and when the movies didn't comfort her, the burned CD from Conrad did.

She had fought with herself to text him a few times, to check on him, but she didn't know if she had the right to do that. She was still keeping a big terribly ugly secret from him, and she knew if he found out it would push him over the edge.

"Betty you better be rooting for us! Team Graham!" Noah said, the girl turning her head away from her thoughts and to the two boys who were donning pink shirts for the volleyball tournament, the even she was being dragged to. Betty knew everybody would be there, she just wasn't too sure about how she felt about it. Unfortunately her mother didn't give her the opportunity to argue, instead telling her she was going or she would lose her phone. It wasn't much of an argument. It was no news to the family that Betty was in some kind of slump.

"Of course...I'm rooting for you guys to lose." Betty said, giving them a tight lipped smile and a snarky look as they pulled into the parking lot. Before Noah or Nick could attack her for the comment she slipped out of the car, taking off with a smile as she heard the sound of her brothers chasing after her.

"That's just rude!" Nick said, grabbing his sister by the back of the shirt and pulling her to a stop. She pushed him hard, their mother scolding them from behind as Noah assisted his brother in holding her arms so that she was defenseless.

"Give her one good gut punch...for good luck." Noah said, laughing as Betty struggled. Finally she managed to push away from them before her brother actually punched her, her face red and her breaths heavy as she shook her head at the two boys.

"Have fun sucking." She said, turning away from them and heading off into the event. There was one person she was looking for, one person she hadn't absolutely made things weird with, her eyes scanning the people for any sign of him. Finally she spotted him, a smile crossing her lips as she made her way towards him.

"Jesus Betty, I thought you died or something." Steven said, pulling the girl into his side as Shayla looked at her.

"No I've just been...sick." She said, Steven rolling his eyes at the comment ad Betty gave Shayla a wave. The girl returned it, Steven knowing damn well that the weird energy in his house correlated with her unexpected absence.

"Sick with liars disease or something." He said, the girl punching him in the side lightly as she pushed away. She started to say something but was surprised when two arms wrapped around her shoulders, a over exaggerated kiss being pressed to the side of her face. She pushed the person off, knowing it was Jeremiah by the sound of his laugh. She wasn't entirely sure how she felt about his affection now, the girl still managing a smile and a head shake at him.

"I'm gonna go find a seat."

"You're not playing?" Steven asked, the three of them looking between each other before they all burst into laughter. Betty was absolute ass at volleyball, she was good at other things like basketball and swimming. "Alright—hey! Cheer me on alright?"

"No way." Betty laughed out, walking away from the others and feeling her chest constrict with nerves as she looked out at the court. Belly and Conrad were standing together, a smile on the girl face as they spoke about something. Betty pushed herself up onto a bar stool, her face going slack as she saw Susannah, the woman grabbing the microphone and beginning the introductions for the tournament.

Betty couldn't even concentrate on what she was saying, her eyes dragging over the older woman as she tried to find any signs that she was dying. There was nothing to note, but knowing that she was just made her seem weaker in comparison to what she thought of her days before. Betty remembered how bad things were when they found out about Susannah the first time, and now she could see that they would be just as bad when everyone found out now.

The game started just as a figure approached Betty, her head turning to see it was Conrad, but he was going for the the bar and not her. His head didn't even turn to her, Betty immediately feeling the iciness of the gesture. She was already confused, wondering if it was because he didn't want to acknowledge her in person, but that had never stopped him before.

"Connie...are you okay?" She asked, his head turning to her when she said him name. His eyes held an angry look and she watched as he considered what to say to her, the girl being taken aback and extremely confused by the mood change. Nothing had happened between them for days...there was no reason for him to be mad at her.

"Yeah I'm good." He said, his tone not reinforcing what he had said.

"Why are you mad at me?" Betty asked, her eyebrows furrowed as she looked at him in deep confusion. He got his drink from the bar, the boy cultivating the perfect response to her question.

"I don't know Betty...how about you ask Jeremiah—since you guys are so close now." Betty's face went pale, Conrad seeming to insinuate that he knew what had happened between them. He stalked away quickly, the girl watching his back as she felt shock roll over her. Her eyes scanned the crowd and fell on Jeremiah who had subbed in for Taylor, her blood boiling as she glared at him.

After he continued to fail terribly at volleyball, Belly decided to sub Conrad in, this giving Betty the opportunity to grab Jeremiah from the sidelines, pulling him away and around the corner of the building, the girl pushing him into the side of the wall.

"Woah...right here?" Jeremiah said, Betty not appreciating the joke. Her face seemed to scare him as he realized she was not happy, the boy looking at her with a more serious look. "What's wrong?"

"You—you promised me you wouldn't tell anybody what happened." She punched him in the shoulder, the boy grabbing his arm and then shaking his head at her.

"I didn't tell anyone! What are you talking about?!"

"Then why did Conrad just—" They both seemed to come to the same conclusion at the same time, their heads turning to look at the volleyball court where Belly was playing the game with Conrad. Both of them stood there in silence, the two of them finally looking back at each other before Betty spoke again. "She told him. Fuck."

"That's not...she doesn't even know what happened—who know what she told him." Jeremiah said, Betty letting him move away from the wall now that she had realized he hadn't betrayed her trust. She ran a hand over her face, wanting the drama to end and also wanting to rip Belly a new one, her eyes glaring at the girl as she played the game against Steven and Shayla.

"It doesn't matter now. He's fucking pissed at me and he knows. How could she—well I know how...she's in love with him so—"

"Do you really think she's like in love with him though? Or do you think maybe she just kind of likes him?" Betty looked back at Jeremiah with a deadpan look, the boy realizing she didn't want to talk about whether or not Belly liked him back. "Sorry...sorry . What are you gonna do?"

The sound of cheering erupted from the crowd and from the court, Belly and Conrad hugging as Susannah announced they had won. Betty was still glaring at Belly, Jeremiah realizing she was no longer paying attention to him.

"I'm going to go talk to her." She left Jeremiah before he could try and tell her maybe it wasn't the best idea, Nicole seeming to beat her to the punch and speaking to Belly. Betty kept approaching, her lips tightened into a straight line as Nicole walked off, Betty calling out for the girls attention. "Belly!"

"Hey...I haven't seen you in a few days." Belly said, Taylor giving the girl a smile as greeting. There was immediate tension between the two girls, Betty crossing her arms over her chest and nodding.

"Yeah I've been sick. Uh...I was wondering if maybe we could talk later or something..." Betty asked, knowing she needed to get somewhere more secluded than the public of this place. Bellys eyebrows furrowed at that, her head nodding before Taylor spoke.

"Actually we're going to some hangout with Nicole tonight...so unless you wanna come with..." Belly was unsure of why Taylor would invite Betty, knowing it wasn't her place to invite anyone. Betty weighed her options, knowing she didn't want to hang out with the debs but wanting the opportunity to get a word in with Belly as soon as possible. She swallowed her pride and nodded, Belly and Taylor both feeling a little better about the fact that they would have another person in their side. "Alright well...Belly will text you the details. See you later."
