sixty-three.
The group walked into the arcade like they were on a mission, and they were—the mission being to beat the crap out of the opposing team. After a slight argument it was decided Betty would in fact be on the team with Belly, Taylor, and Skye. It was no surprise there, Betty never intended on being on the other team anyways. She actually really liked Skye, and if no one was going to be running the defense that they had discussed earlier...she was happy to do it.
They made a beeline for the laser tag, Betty's eyes widening the closer they got. She turned her head to look at Conrad and he was already looking at her, the boy biting the inside of his cheek and quickly looking away. She sidestepped the group, a lighter expression on her face as she bumped him with her shoulder.
"Are you still being an asshole?" She said in a low tone, the boy staring straight ahead as she said it. She raised an eyebrow as he processed her words, the boy unable to handle her gaze and breaking. He smiled, the boy shaking his head and looking down at her. She could still see it there...the tension in his face but she figured the smile was his attempt to convince her all was okay.
"Are you still being dramatic?" He retorted, the girl returning the smile and bumping him again.
"You remember the last time we were here?" She asked, using her head to gesture towards the laser tag as they stood in line. He couldn't look at her for too long, his eyes flickering across a bunch of surfaces as he thought up a reply. Of course he remembered the last time they were here. They had played laser tag 4 times...she had won every single time. And then after they made out in the Photo Booth...and by the water...and in the car. It was hard to forget—it had been pretty early in their relationship but beyond memorable. Every moment with her was memorable, the good and the bad.
Conrad looked back to her as the memories effected him mentally and physically, his knees feeling weaker when he thought about it. He didn't know if they're ere thinking of the same thing, his eyes meeting hers and the boy quickly realizing they must've been. The sly look on her face, her little smirk...she must have been remembering the same thing.
"I remember." He said, Betty narrowing her eyes a little bit and only further confirming what he already knew. She leaned towards him a little bit, the boy hoping to take a step back in hopes he could get himself under control.
"Then you remember how good I am at this. Consider it an easy win for my team." She said lowly, her voice only low enough for the two of them to hear. She pulled back and stepped away, Conrad watching after her with wide eyes. He immediately assumed she was torturing him on purpose, that she was intentionally getting into his head...maybe as a strategy, maybe just because for some reason she had decided to be evil. He didn't know, but he did know that whatever the reason was, it was working. He watched as the worker let them into the loading room, an excited hop in her step as she hurried inside. He was the last one in, the boys starting to hype him up as he got his vest on. Soon enough he was smiling and excited, the thought of her itching at the back of his mind constantly. She had her smile stitched into her face and every time he looked at her she was engaging with the others like she hadn't before. It was like nothing was wrong.
"All right, everyone. All right. The games are best if five rounds. The first and last rounds, everyone plays. The middle rounds it's a one-on-one competition so choose your best fighter." Belly explained the rules, Skye quick to speak.
"Probably not gonna be me." Belly was quick to stop the negativity, Betty sending a knowing look back at Conrad who just laughed a little at her daunting gaze. The memories this place held...they were both thinking of the same thing. Jeremiah caught the look, his head turning to the door they were going to go into.
"Hey don't sell yourself short alright?"
"Okay." Skye agreed, Betty clapping a hand onto their shoulder before she got a better grip on her gun.
"Alright you losers ready?" Jeremiah said, his voice excitable and hurried. They nodded and he proceeded, his voice loud as he moved to take an advantage. "Three, two, one. Go! First to 21 wins!"
The first round was quicker than any of them expected, Betty sneaking through the room to get a total of 8 hits for Team Belly before a combo move from the two brothers took the team out. Steven was Betty's main target..he was slow on his feet at times and too focused on Taylor. He swore to get revenge, Betty's giggling being the thing to give her away when Jeremiah shot her. That was the only time she got hit.
When they got to the solo round they put all their eggs in Betty's basket, Team Conrad sending the team captain in with her. Betty hurried through the room, her lips pulled into a smile as she snuck along the wall. The music in the room was so loud she couldn't count on hearing his steps, her head on a swivel as she waited for any chance to shoot Conrad. Whoever shot first won the round, and she was not going to lose.
She caught a wind behind her, her head turning quickly as she swore someone had ran past her. She took off, her head turning to look and make sure he wasn't behind her, the girl not watching where she was going. Of course she ran right into her target, the girl letting out a yell as they collided. She didn't want to fall, the girl holding onto his shirt for a chance to stay up, the boy too surprise by her running into him to really register what was happening. They looked at each other with a crazed look, Betty's smile wide and thrilling while Conrad really looked like he was having a good time. Their chest were slightly touching as they let out heavy breaths from running and Betty's gaze shifted, Conrad catching the monumental moment that her eyes dropped to his lips. He felt a jolt of excitement in his stomach when the memories of laser tag hit them both, but it was soon taken over by the swift pain of defeat, his best lighting up. He took a small step back, looking down at her hands and seeing that the gun was pressed directly to the sensor. He kept his smile as she waited for a reaction to laugh, the boy shaking his head slightly as he spoke.
"Dirty." He said, and she let out that laugh. She backed away from him, shrugging her shoulders as she gave him a sheepish look. She turned and left the room, leaving him to let the next group in.
Team Belly ultimately ended up losing, Betty laughing it off because she knew she had done what she was supposed to do. They all left the laser tag, Belly attempting to cheer their team up.
"Hey you know what? Don't worry, we'll get them next time." Belly said, Betty nodding her head at the girl and speaking.
"It was so much fun though right?" Betty's question was mostly directed towards Skye, the girl wanting to know if she was getting through to them.
"Get them next time? I think we're playing Capture the Flag next. And if I remember correctly—" Conrad butt into their conversation, Betty looking back at him and noticing his genuine smile. Jeremiah looked at Betty as Conrad pointed to Steven, his lip slightly curling up as he saw the way she was looking at his brother with adoration. It was too obvious in her eyes. He wanted to stop it...he knew exactly how.
"Oh, yes. I got this bro!" Steven said, nodding his head dutifully at Conrad.
"All right, I need a pee break." Taylor announced, turning away to fulfill that and leaving the rest of them. Jeremiah took this as his chance to intervene, the boy throwing an arm over Betty's shoukd and making her look up at him with a smile.
"Damn you're good at laser tag." He said, the girl laughing a bit and stepping a little closer to him she she wasn't uncomfortably far away from him.
"It's fun." She said, the boy watching as her eyes flickering for a millisecond to Conrad who was talking to Skye. His smiled didn't drop but it faltered, the boy unable to decipher the multi layered feelings he had for the girl and only being able to pick out jealousy clearly.
"Does Jack play laser tag?" His words did exactly what he knew they would, reminding her of her boyfriend in a situation where she was blinded by Conrad. He watched now as her smile faltered, his eyebrows raising as he held up the facade of caring about that answer.
"I'm not sure. We haven't played." She said, some light disappearing from her eyes as she reconsidered some of the things she had done in the game. She excused herself, Jeremiah watching as she made her way to the rock wall. Betty moved to lean against the wall on the left side of the rock, her eyebrows furrowing as she reached into her pocket and pulled her phone out.
Her finger hovered over Jacks contact and she considered calling him, the girl shaking her head slightly and moving to text. She typed a few times, a few different texts before she turned the phone off, putting it back into her pocket. She ran a hand over her hair and then leaned against the wall, her eyes going to the two boys who were standing with Skye. They seemed to be talking about something serious, Betty's eyes lingering on Conrad and the fact that his smile she was so happy to see had disappeared. She wouldn't say it out loud because she liked Skye, but they were a bit of a downer.
The memory of the last time she was at this arcade fought its way into her brain and she saw it like a movie, the girl playing one of the games and Conrad behind her, his arms wrapped around her stomach as she attempted to get the high score. He'd moved his hands from her stomach to her hips and then to the machine, the boy whispering things to her about the game and about how pretty she looked. It was a memory clear as day, and she remembered how much fun they had had when they'd left. She could almost feel it. Suddenly she could remember the way they'd woken up that morning, his arms around her. It reminded her a lot of how much better she had gotten at self control. They had had sexual tension for a long time now, the tension of being insanely attracted to each other. The tension of never really resolving anything. She felt her stomach drop into a pit as she thought of their history. Of how much they really liked each other. She wanted to—
"You ready?" Belly said, calling the attention from Betty's impure train of thoughts. She nodded and Taylor and Steven were running towards the wall, Steven grabbing at the handles.
"You think I can do it right now?" Steven said, looking back at the others as Betty fought to clear her mind.
"No, no, no, you actually can't do that without a harness!" The familiar voice cleared her mind immediately, Betty's face lighting up when she looked back to see Cam running towards them.
"Cam! Oh my god! You work here?"
"Yes I do. Hi nice to see you Betty." He said, his voice stems as he held the harness out to Steven.
"Wait are we in trouble?" Jeremiah said, gesturing towards Steven. Cams attention went to Belly who had said his name in surprise as well.
"Oh. I mean, officially, there's no horseplay on or around the rock wall, but unofficially, it's the most exciting thing to happen all day." Cam said, the boy looking pleased to see them all. His eyes lingered in Belly and Betty remembered the shit he went through last summer at the hands of her indecision, the girl taking s few steps to the side and leaning on the little wall.
"What are you doing here? I thought Nicole said that you were doing some internship on a fancy whaling boat." Belly said, Betty looking around the arcade as she felt like someone was looking at her.
"That fell through." Cam said, just as Betty caught who was looking at her. It was Robbie, the girl seeing now as as good as any time to go over and check in on him. She had been pulled away from him outside, but now she had plenty of time to go catch up.
"I'll be back." Betty said, pressing a hand to Conrad's arm and then walking off. He looked to see where she was going and watched as she approached Robbie, his head turning back to Belly and Cam and the boy feeling like he was standing in between two of the same interactions. Both of them made him jealous. One of them made him want to rip his hair out.
He looked at Belly and Cam and then back at Betty and Robbie, his head staying turned to them as he watched to see what would happen. They both seemed really engaged in the conversation, Conrad always seeming to forget that they had been friends for years. Every time he saw or thought of Robbie, he saw Nicole's party last year and Betty kissing him. He watched as Robbie must've said something funny, her hand lifting to his arm as she laughed. After a few more moment she pointed thumb in the direction of the wall, Robbie nodding his head and then the girl hugging him. She jogged back over just as Steven won Capture the Flag, a smile returned to her lips as she stopped between the two brothers.
"What'd I miss?"
