Character Profiles

So, I promised these to Tori quite a while ago. Now I finally had time to put together all the information (I'm not the most organised person, notes everywhere...), write the profiles and upload them.

The appearance part is how I envisioned these characters when I created them by the way. Since I believe that's a very personal thing, and would like to give everyone the freedom to picture the characters however they want, I'm purposely keeping this part a bit more vague.

This is the somewhat the abridged version because it was really turning into a monster wall of text nobody wants to read. ^^'

Sem Bolton

Full Name: Sem Bolton

Age: 16

Birthday: 30th of May

Height: 6'0

Body: Mesomorph; Toned, athletic, and definite muscle definition. Think lightly visible sixpack abs, and no he does not skip leg day.

Hair: Light brown; medium length, wavy, and on the messy side

Eyes: Green/blue; blue with green flecks at the edges of the iris.

Occupation: High school student, no current side jobs (although he takes summer jobs for some extra cash)

Parents: Josephine "Josie" Bolton, and Noah Bolton

Siblings: 1 older brother, Daniel Bolton (19, almost 20 years old).

Religion: Loudly claims to be an atheist, but secretly does believe in a higher power like God. Not covered in Better Sorry than Safe, but Sem has short, fleeting moments of worry whether he's going to hell, or God will punish him, for being gay.

Hobbies: Most of Sem's hobbies revolve around sports. He likes playing soccer with friends, and kickboxing. He regularly goes jogging (and usually ends up climbing random stuff he finds on the way; such as playground objects or light poles - think parkour). Otherwise, watching popular series (whatever's trending), watching soccer or any martial arts competitions on television, and going to the clubs and bars with friends.

Strengths:

Charming and sociable; Sem has no issues making contact with new people. He's definitely outgoing and makes friends/a good impression easily when he's on his best behaviour. Quick-witted, he usually has a joke or comeback to offer in response to what other people say in social context.

Go-getter/plucky; If Sem wants something, he goes out to get it, even when facing adversity. He's also quickly back on his feet when something fails, ready to try again or change his strategy.

Self-confident; Sem wholeheartedly believes in his own worth - even during obvious moment of doubt in Better Sorry than Safe, he does keep on believing in himself, his strengths, and his ability to pull through.

Loving; Once Sem loves something, or someone, he will give everything he has for them/it - spare no effort, accept a lot, even if it would go at the cost of himself.

Weaknesses:

Temper/impulsive; Sem is inclined to say things he might've better not said, picks fights he might've better not picked, and takes risks he might've better not taken. Goes towards recklessness.

Shallow & Openly prejudiced; Judges people by things like appearance and/or hobbies. Just as much as he's an enormous sucker for cute guys, he's unfriendly and insensitive towards people who fall outside of the spectrum of people he likes, and quick to dismiss people he doesn't see as worthwhile. This flaw becomes significantly less severe during Better Sorry than Safe, as Sem gets to experience what it is like to be treated badly because of something he can't change.

Domineering/overbearing/a bully; Sem has a tendency to walk all over people who are not (as) dominant as he is in terms of personality, sometimes without even noticing,  and mostly without even caring.

Careless and messy; Sem is rather careless with material possessions and money - not fully explored in Better Sorry than Safe, but did  bring him in trouble when Emma ended up knowing his password, getting hold of his phone, and outing him.

Character Background:

From an early age on, Sem was a boy with a strong own will; he was stubborn, headstrong, and had a challenging temperament. He threw regular tantrums, and if little Sem wanted to go to the park, he would walk away to the park. He climbed fences, climbed trees, and even escaped the house on occasion if he decided he wanted to go outside despite his parents telling him no. Sem was constantly busy pushing limits, testing limits, and trying everyone's patience. It was hard for his parents to keep a handle on him, they constantly had to punish him and chastise him and tell him no, and it cost a lot of energy to do so.

Sem was in stark contrast with his older brother Daniel, who was more tame and docile and did what mum and dad told him to do; much more like the friendly angel every parent would love to have. It was easy for Sem's parents to feel more connected to Daniel, the firstborn, who also naturally excelled the school system, which is important to Sem and Daniel's parents.

Rather than being intellectually gifted, sports were always Sem's thing, and sports have always played an important role in Sem's life; he thought it was amazing what his body could do, and how it improved as he got older. He loved being fast, and being the strongest  boy in gym class. Aside from PE teachers however, most teachers didn't like Sem. He talked in class, and seemed more interested in entertaining his peers than learning. Yet, Sem always did just barely enough work to secure himself passing grades, and no teacher could really fail him even when wanting to.

As a result of the dynamics in his family and school results, Sem started strongly underestimating his own intelligence in his early teens. Daniel (who he compares himself to unfavourably in this area, although he will not admit it) was obviously more intelligent, liked school way more, and learned faster. It's not an area Sem can compete in with his brother, and being constantly compared to him by their parents didn't help. When he went to high school, Sem refused to go to the same school as Daniel, not wanting the expectations being forced on him further in school as well as at home too.

Sem met Nick, who was already friends with Matthew and Ethan and others, in high school. He started playing soccer mostly because all the other boys in his new circle were doing it. He stopped inviting parents to games, because whenever he did well in a competition it was always followed by 'if only you worked this hard in school, huh?'

School is largely at blame for how Sem came to resent Daniel, the obviously favoured child, and Sem acted up further once he grew stronger than Daniel (at around 15, as a result of his aptitude for sports and also being allowed to practice kickboxing alongside soccer), bullying his brother. At this point, Sem's scrawny dad was also no longer capable of physically overpowering his son, and yes, that has been reason for worry- although Sem never threatened physical harm towards his parents. It always stayed with (angry) words.

Especially Sem's mum was always very protective over Daniel, always picking Daniel's side in an argument, which threw more fuel on the resentment fire. Sem didn't however fully realise his own part in it (how he was not exactly nice either) and his mum's reasons for being so protective. It was mostly because Daniel, who already got bullied in school, needed more protection in her eyes. Sem on the other hand had no issues standing up for himself and then some more.

Sem realised he was gay late-ish; when he was around end 15 begin 16 years old. He always assumed he was straight, because that's what everyone was. He mistook loving the attention girls gave him, for actually loving girls. He never did understand what was so interesting about making out, but it seemed to be a big deal that he did, so he made out with a lot of girls. Once he got his first girlfriend, Shannon, and the sexual contact between them was extremely lacklustre at best, very many little things started adding up.

He'd always liked looking at boys (which no, was not just admiring how disciplined they were for having those muscles - which was what he told himself), and he was the only one out of his friends who wasn't really disgusted at the idea of kissing a guy or even touching him (although he made gay jokes just as loudly and much). Once he stumbled upon some gay x-rated material online, and realised he was always awfully focused on the men when watching straight videos, he started catching on.

Connor Judd

Full Name: Connor Judd

Age: 18

Birthday: December 23rd

Height: 5'11

Body: A blend of ecto- and mesomorph features. Some muscle-definition is visible, but the type of muscles he has comes from physical labor, rather than careful sculpting at the gym.

Hair: Short and straight black hair. Connor uses no wax or gel or other hair products (other than shampoo for washing) - it's too much work according to him.

Eyes: Dark brown, somewhat narrow.

Occupation: Mechanical engineering student at Valsten University (fictional university); Part time car mechanic at Jack's autofix (fictional garage).

Parents: Anna Judd, father unknown (dropped Anna like a brick when she told him she was pregnant and wouldn't abort).

Siblings: None. His father had a son and a daughter with another woman, so he has two half-siblings running around somewhere - but he doesn't know about their existence and vice versa.

Religion: Agnostic - Connor believes science and religion can and need to coexist. However, religion is not a topic he dwells on a lot. He tends to be a lot more concerned with practical and material matters: what's right there in front of him.

Hobbies: Cars and fixing them up. He follows Formula One religiously, and also has a special love for motorcycles, WW2 tanks, and rockets/spaceships. Otherwise, anything that will require building something out of raw materials/DIY, will have his attention, from carpentry to even knitting (no he doesn't care if Sem or someone else calls him a granny for it). Otherwise, he also enjoys puzzles (all sorts of puzzles), and sometimes video games (always real-time strategy such as Age of Empires).

His preferred type of movies are slashers, and horror in general. Action, futuristic and adventure are fine too, but he dislikes most romcoms and most fantasy.

Strengths:

Independent; Connor is resourceful, intelligent and is very capable of solving his own problems; seeking his own solutions rather than needing to ask for help. He trusts in his ability to carve his own road, on his own.

Disciplined; Steadfast, reliable, hard working, that's Connor in a nutshell. He calls when he says he calls. He'll do anything not to break promises, and works hard to get ahead.

Kindhearted; Connor enjoys helping others. He's not that great at showing sympathy in words however, and will generally show that he cares more through actions. He can't bear seeing someone getting hurt, and as a rule doesn't judge and treats people kindly (if they've never given him reason not to be).

Weaknesses:

Taciturn; Connor doesn't easily share emotions or opinions, especially not with new people. Withdrawn and somewhat aloof, he sometimes doesn't talk when he should talk, or share his thoughts/communicate when it would've been better if he had to solve future issues.

Prideful; Connor is too stubborn to ask for help, even if he is metaphorically on fire. He will be hard pressed to admit certain weaknesses or that he can't do something. He's also not the most forgiving.

Workaholic; Connor gets completely sucked up into his work (school work or at the garage or even chores he accepted for others)- If it's not pointed out and/or someone demands for his attention, Connor often forgets to share things that people like to hear (huh? I could've sworn I told you I moved), forgets that his phone exists, and sometimes even that other people exist.

Not covered in Better Sorry than Safe; Connor has dyslexia.

Character Background:

Connor had a rough start to life. He was born to his single, seventeen year old teenage mother (Anna Judd), who in turn was stuck in an abusive cycle at home. Finding her father (and Connor's grandfather) screaming at the crying infant Connor was the wake up call for Anna to finally leave; she feared for her baby's safety and what else might happen if Connor was ever left alone with him.

On her own, and with only a high school diploma to her name, Anna just barely landed on her feet, barely scraped by. Having no family members to count on, Anna often had to swallow her pride to gain financial support from government sources, and she worked long hours to support herself and her child. Connor was used to being left alone a lot. He was forced to grow up fast and learn to be independent - to do his own cooking and laundry, to take care of himself and entertain himself. Once upon a time Connor was mad at his mom for never being home, like he saw other moms be home for their kids, but later on understood why it was necessary and that she was doing her best for him.

Growing up, Connor saw his flaws more than his strengths. When he looked at himself, he saw an introvert who finds it hard to talk to people and connect to them. He saw a skinny geek (Connor hit puberty and his growth spurt late), brown skin/being part of a minority (half Mexican), a learning disorder, gay (Connor caught on early he was more attracted to boys, when he was around 8/9 years old. He also caught on early that it was better to keep his mouth shut about it), and poor.

One of Connor's first memories is himself thinking that he did not have much to hold on to, wasn't good at and for many things. Through everything though, he had some talents, some things that couldn't be taken away. And that was his curiosity to learn, his gift for mathematics, exact sciences, and his handiness. He was exceptionally good working with his hands and loved doing so. It started simple, with building miniature houses and other things out of wooden ice cream sticks (mum couldn't afford LEGO). Soon (after a lot of experimenting that drove his mum insane - Connor did break stuff in his curiosity and taking stuff apart), it became useful things around the house - such as being able to do small repairs. Later still, when he caught the vehicle fever, it landed him a job at Jack's autofix.

Not thinking it smart to stand out in school, Connor made himself as invisible as possible. Unassuming and with no desire to be noticed, he was one of those kids who slipped between the cracks among his peers. He mostly went ignored by the other kids; he wasn't part of the cool crowd nor bullied. He had a very small circle of friends and quietly trudged onward, just trying to survive high school and getting good grades.

As unnoticed as he went by other kids though, he did not go unnoticed by teachers. Teachers in primary school had thought of him as having a bad attitude because he wasn't cooperative when they learned reading in class. Though, it wasn't Connor not wanting to read, but rather not being able to and not admitting that out of fear of being called dumb (because none of the other kids seemed to have issues learning how to read). Things improved significantly when they found out he has dyslexia, at least for Connor's self-esteem. At least there was a reason now why he had such a hard time reading. With some helpful teachers, he re-found his willingness to learn, and eventually did master reading more or less in time (without having to double a year).

In high school, Connor was still a very controversial case. Some teachers thought Connor very intelligent with a good dose of curiosity and eager to learn. Others found him slow and didn't see him achieve a lot in the future. Unsurprisingly, the more positive opinions came from the exact science teachers, the more negative opinions came from language class teachers. The controversiality was all for one simple reason: his dyslexia. It was perplexing to some teachers (who did not understand the concept of dyslexia) how a kid who couldn't even spell algorithm could be so proficient in mathematics. Although he pulled through in the end, Connor did not always run into the most understanding teachers, and especially French books have taken flying lessons in frustration. To be fair: he also was not very motivated in language classes, which might've added to those teachers' assessment.

As mentioned before, Connor did not hit puberty until quite late, and remained short and childish looking for a long time. He didn't garner much attention from girls or boys alike in high school, he didn't even come out in high school (only his mum knew he was gay). As a result, even at 19 years old he's still often perplexed when a guy shows interest in him.  Proverbially, he's still inclined to look over his shoulder to check if you're talking to the guy behind him instead, even though he's sort of aware he's not bad looking. His looks increased very significantly with age, as he finally grew taller and his facial features became more traditionally handsome. But knowing and feeling isn't exactly the same thing.

Sem's interest in him came as a complete shock to Connor, because the popular, handsome and 'cool crowd' jocks like Sem sure never showed him any interest while he was in high school himself. As such, he found it somewhat difficult to believe it was true. Connor simultaneously questioned Sem's intentions and told himself not to question them because Sem was very nice to him, genuinely seemed nervous when they first spoke at Jack's to fix his bike, and also genuinely seemed to like him.

And there we have it. Wow, kudos to you for still being here! I'm impressed you read all of this! I guess... let's immediately turn this into a Q&A. I'm sure I didn't catch everything, so anything not covered here that you still wanna know about? Please, do leave any questions in the comment section and thanks for reading.
