Different

The sky had started to turn dark and I was growing tired, I decided in order to stay alert it was best to get out into the streets, hear the noises and feel the cold. I got up from my chair where I had been seated for just about two hours and tidied myself up. The waitress on shift gave me some strange looks but I just smiled at them and they left me be. I had been intently watching Mr blue eyes the entire time, he finished his meal with his friend and was begging to leave, I thought it best to wait for five minutes before leaving so It didn't look suspicious I was leaving at the same time as him. I watched him exit the restaurant, say goodbye to his acquaintance, walk down the street and vanish from my view, I thanked the waitress before swinging open the door into the street.

I ran down the street my feet thumping on the path with each pace, I kept running until the man was in sight. He was walking slowly, probably tired from his meal this was a real vantage point for me, slow, tired and in darkness. I could get it over with now if I so wished, but that wasn't going to suffice. I needed to see him, see his face, see his skin in daylight, preferably the early morning glow  but any other time would do. I thought to myself as I followed him, my previous kills had been females, short brunettes with daddy issues and very little self esteem. I hadn't once dreamt of killing a male, I usually engaged in a relationship with my victims before killing them so I could understand everything about them, that wouldn't work with a guy, I would have to approach his kill differently.

The man had started to run, not just jog, sprint. I wondered what had urged him to do so, I picked up my pace and followed him. He had passed his house and was running towards what looked like a children's playground, I chuckled to myself. I felt in my jacket for a pack of cigarettes and luckily enough I had a pack and my lighter was tucked firmly in my other pocket, I lit up and inhaled as I tapped the embers onto the floor watching the amber light swirl in the darkness. Blue eyes had entered the playground and was sat on a swing, creaking each time he moved, I opened the iron gate and sauntered casually over to the swing set.

I took a drag from my cigarette as I sat down, staying silent as I did so. Under the faint street light I could make out his figure, he was looking my way probably for some sort of greeting, I took another drag "Hey" he chirped, his voice was soft and sweet, I exhaled a cloud of smoke "Hey?" I wasn't one for conversation, we sat swinging in silence until he grabbed something from his pocket, it was a phone. He put on the torch and shone it my way making me squint "Christ that's bright" I groaned the white light shining directly in my face "Oh sorry" the boy said quickly moving his phone so the light was no longer in my eye "You're that guy from the gas station right?" He asked with a hint of apprehension "Yeah" I would keep my replies short, I always would with my victims I would find out about them and give them very little in return "Vincent was it?" He asked sounding unsure of himself, I chuckled and took another hit "Victor" I said blowing the smoke into his face making him choke a little, "Victor, that's a cool name" he said sweetly "Thanks" I said plastering on my most convincing fake smile, I swung myself higher "What brings you to a play park this late at night?" He was so eager to find out about me, it was infuriating "I could ask you the same" I said making him nervously chuckle "I like the park at night, there is something so eerie yet nostalgic about it" he replied, what was this kid? a poet? "What about you?" He asked eagerly "Clearing my head" it was the most simple reply I could think of in the moment "Do you come here often?" He mumbled, "No" I snapped making him shy away a little bit, I took a final drag of my cigarette before stamping it out on the ground.

We sat for what felt like years in the darkness, the bitter cold stringing our hands. I offered him a cigarette but he declined politely which I was actually quite happy about, one more cigarette left for me. This Kellin guy seemed to be quite an interesting character and I had definitely taken a liking to him. He smiled a lot which made me feel a bit odd, like a tingling sensation in my stomach, something I hadn't felt before then again I hadn't eaten since lunch, it was probably that. He started to swing really high, squealing like a child as he did and I had such an urge to push him off but then again, I'm not seven or his big brother. Instead I joined him, swinging as high as the swing would allow me. I enjoyed the illusion that I was as high as the trees, Kellin seemed to as well "Isn't this so fun!?" he giggled "I suppose so" I said with a small chuckle, I did have to admit there was nothing quite as fun, well that was besides sex, murder and arson.

Kellin has stopped swinging and was now staring at his feet "Maybe we could do this again" I almost squealed he was just handing me opportunities "Yeah maybe we could" I replied trying to sound as nice as possible "Could I get your number?" He asked politely "Nope" I replied, I loved leaving people wanting more but I saw him frown "Oh okay" he mumbled clearly disappointed "I'll be at the gas station five days a week, if you ever happen to stop by" I replied trying to stop him frowning, he smiled again "Yeah, I'll see you around then, Vic" I shot him a grin before heading towards the gates "See you around Kellin" I shouted before slamming the gate behind me leaving the boy illuminated by street light swinging on his own.

He was different. I liked that.
