• Chapter 4 •

Christian opened his eyes to a bright looking room, his eyes felt extremely heavy. He groaned as he struggled to sit up. "Be careful." A voice says. Christian felt cold seeing a shirt was at the end of the bed. His eyes widen, shaking off the sleep from himself. The last thing he remembered was being in the apartment with Clary and the blonde from the club. He and his sister had injuries. He looked down at his neck to see something there, looking like a tattoo.

"Thanks for letting me use your room and your clothes." Another voice says.

"I don't know why you couldn't have just put him with the other one, Jace."

"I didn't want anyone questioning. And he had demon venom on his clothes, yours fit the best you're almost the same height."

Christian's sight adjusted and saw the blonde and the dark haired boys from the club. "It's you two." He states.

"Good, they're up, get them out." The taller one says.

"From the club, and from my house..." Christian looked around and saw he was somewhere unfamiliar. "Where's my sister?" He questions getting up from the bed. Alec looks away from Christian back at Jace with an annoyed look on his face.

Christian looks down to see that his shirt was off and another black shirt was on the edge of the bed. "That's for you. And she's safe. Don't worry." Jace responds. Christian puts on the black t-shirt and black pants to match that hung a bit loose but not where it couldn't fit.

"Yeah, sure. I want to see her, now." He orders them. He didn't want to be in this place not knowing if they were in danger.

"I don't think you're in the position to order us around." Alec scoffs.

"Fine, I'll look for her myself." He says as he turns around and fast walks through the institute.

"Really Alec?" Jace asks as he follows the boy. Jace catches up to the fast tall boy and says, "I'll take you to her. She's fine." Alec as well catches up to the two, ignoring Christian and keeps walking forward as they approach where Clary sat in bed with the girl from the club.

"Mundanes shouldn't even be here." Alec states to Jace.

"Where is "here" exactly?" Clary asks.

"Clary." Christian sighs out as he sits on the bed with Clary. She reaches out to him and they meet in an embrace.

"I was wondering where you were. I was scared something happened to you." Clary tells her brother.

"They're not mundanes, Alec."

"How do you know that?" Alec asks.

"Because the seraph blade lit up when she touched it. Look, Isabelle, can you..." Isabelle gets up as Jace sits on the bed in front of Clary.

"I'm Jace Wayland."

"I'm uh- Clary Fray. This is my brother Christian."

"We know who you two are." Jace tells the two.

"Am I the only one who finds this unusual?" Alec asks.

"You find everything unusual, Alec." Jace replies to him.

"I find this really unusual. My sister and I had normal lives until we met you." Christian says pointing to Jace with a glare on his face. "Now we're shoved into some world of demons and shadowhunters."

"I have to report this to the Clave." Alec says.

"You know what? Dial it down a notch."

Christian looked and saw Clary had the same tattoo as him with a different shirt. "Who changed your shirt?" He asks with wide eyes. "And who took my shirt off?" The girl giggled from her seat as he sat worried.

"Don't worry, I did it. And my brother doesn't have a dial. I love you, Alec, but you have a switch that's always on."

"I love you too. But this-"

"Hey you know what? Give me a minute." Jace says to Alec who ignores his request. "Here's a word you never hear me say. Please?"

"What is with you?" Isabelle stands up as Alec continues to talk, "Really, no, what is with him?"

"Walk with me, big brother."

As the Lightwood siblings walked away, Christian found himself looking back at them retreat.

"I'll explain it to you." Izzy tells her brother as they walk down the hallway.

"We don't know this girl. Or the boy. There's no such thing as new Shadowhunters."

"There is now."

"You don't find that strange?" Alec asks when Izzy stops him from walking further.

"What I find strange is that you're so upset. Maybe you're upset by the way Jace is looking at her." Alec rolled his eyes at his sister who smiled, "You know you should be happy that Jace is interested in someone other than himself, it'd be nice if you were interested in something else as well."

"Maybe I'm pissed that she ruined the mission."

"What about the boy?" Izzy asks with a smirk. Alec rolls his eyes at his sister.

"We never found out who's buying the blood. That was our one job." Alec leaves without another word for Isabelle to contemplate, but a part of her was filled with hope and giddiness thinking about the new boy who caught her brother's eye even if for a second.

"Your wounds, they healed." Jace comments to the twins in the other room.

Clary looks down in shock and then to her brother who already had noticed. "How is that even possible?" She asks.

"I'd like to know that too. And how we got these tattoos on our necks."

"Tattoos?" Clary asks with wide eyes. She looks back to Jace who sat calm, because to him this was the norm. To the twins, they were being introduced to a whole other world. "So, what, we're miraculously healed, and all of you... stunning people have magical powers?"

Jace scoffs at the girl who had no clue. "No. No, don't confuse me with a warlock."

"A warlock?" Christian asks. "This has got to be some sick joke. So witches, magic, and stuff exist and all?"

"It's one of the downworlders." Jace answers like it should have been obvious to the two.

"Okay, you're not making any sense."

"Warlocks, vampires, seelies-"

"Literally my brain is about to explode."

"Everything you're saying is not ringing a bell with us, Jace. We're not apart of this world even if it seems like we should."

"Well, I'll keep it simple for you. All the legends are true. We're shadowhunters. We protect the human world from the demon world. So those people you saw murdered at the Pandemonium, they weren't people at all, they were shapeshifting demons."

"We're not interested in being a part of your supernatural fight club. My brother and I just want to find our mom." Clary speaks for herself and Christian. He had a bad feeling about going though, he felt being here may be best for them. They couldn't trust anybody, they knew where their home was. These people knew what everything was, they could explain to them.

"Clary, I don't know if it's the best idea to leave." Christian tells his sister with a hand on her shoulder.

"All I care about is finding our mother. Please." Clary begs the blonde shadowhunter. "Please help us find her."

"I'm the best chance you've got."

"I don't even know you."

"Thank you." Christian thanks Jace who nods at him.

Clary's cellphone starts to ring and the twins search frantically for it. "If it's Luke, put me on the phone." Christian says as he thinks about anybody who would call them at this time.

"It's Simon." Clary gasps out as she answers immediately. Jace sees the look of happiness on Christian's face and could see he wished it was him who answered the phone for this person, Simon.

"Things are... all ripped apart." She tells him over the phone. Clary then rushes to the stained window as Christian assumed Simon had to be outside. He stands up and makes his way over to the window next to Clary. He laughs a bit seeing Simon's van sitting outside as he sits on the phone. "I see you."

"I don't see you." Simon says as he looks in their direction inside.

"Give us five minutes, I have to get dressed."

"Dressed? What are you doing undressed in an abandoned church?" Simon asks with worry. "Clary, is there a meth problem we have to talk about?" Christian chuckles looking down at the mundane who stood in front.

"Simon, just give me five minutes, okay? Christian and I will be out."

"Christian is with you? Why did he let you get undressed in there?" Clary rolled her eyes and gave her brother the phone who looked out the window and smiled.

"Heyy, Simon."

"Are you gonna answer me or do you have to get dressed too?" Simon asks.

"No, I already got dressed. We'll meet you out front. Don't worry." Christian says before hanging up leaving Simon even more confused.

"What happened to my clothes?" Clary asks the shadowhunter.

"Demon venom. Remember? Isabelle left you these." Jace answers pointing to the clothes put to the side.

"Who's clothes are these then?" Christian asks about the all black clothing, just as black as the clothing left for Clary.

"Alec." Christian scoffed, the same boy who didn't even want them around.

"I'm shocked."

"You're kidding right?" Clary asks holding up part of the outfit.

"She's very comfortable with her body."

"Okay."

When Clary was fully dressed she observed herself in the mirror seeing the "tattoo" Christian was speaking of. "How did that get there?" She asks Jace.

"I drew that."

"Okay, listen. I still don't get everything that's going on here, but you do not get to tattoo my neck"

Christian speaks up with a little hand raise, "Yeah I don't like getting stuff on my neck without me knowing about it."

"Duly noted. I guess next time I'll just let you die. And it's not a tattoo. It's a rune. They have enormous power. Good for shadowhunters, lethal for humans."

"So that's why you think we're shadowhunters, cause we got runes and didn't die?" Christian asks, receiving a nod in response.

"But you, you already know about runes, don't you?" Jace asks Clary, picking up her book.

"How do you think she'd know from drawing stuff?" Christian wonders as Clary stares at Jace in confusion.

"Which is what makes you so interesting Clary Fray." Christian stared intensely at the Wayland boy who grew too attached to his sister. It was as if he was drawn to her. He didn't even know if he could trust these people yet and now he had no choice it seemed but to sit and watch as he and Clary formed some bond.

--

As the twins walked towards the front entrance of the institute, the blonde shadowhunter followed with a glowing sword at his side. "I saw something behind your friend." He explains as Christian stared at Jace with a protectiveness for his loved ones.

"You're not gonna kill Simon, are you?" Clary asks him.

"Protect the humans, kill the demons. You'll get it eventually." Jace then says. The three left the institute leaving Simon even more confused seeing the twins in outfits that did not suit them at all, while speaking to air like they did at the club.

"So, why can't Simon see you?" Clary asks Jace. Christian walked next to Jace on his other side and stared down at him for the explanation. He assumed he would need to be explained a lot if he would have to get used to this world of shadowhunters and save his mom.

"This is a glamour, a rune that makes me invisible to mundanes." Jace answers as he lifts up his shirt. "It's a shame really, 'cause... well I'm denying them all this." Christian rolls his eyes at the ego on this boy, no matter how stunning.

"A real tragedy." He mutters.

"What do you have on, Clary?" Simon asks while taking off his jacket for her. "Let me take you home." Jace could see the way that Simon was so concerned for Clary, yet didn't give a second glance to Christian. Christian would never admit how much it hurt sometimes to not be included even in moments like this. He didn't need the attention she received, but maybe some of the worry of someone who cared about him too.

"I don't think we have one anymore."

"Why? What do you mean?"

"Well.." Clary tries to explain as she puts on his coat but is interrupted by a man.

"Clary Fairchild! Christian Fairchild!" The man yells with a sword in his hand. He didn't have the chance to continue as Jace went for the attack. Clary gasps as Christian stands protectively in front of the two.

"What's going on, guys?" Simon asks the twins. "What are you two looking at?" Simon couldn't see as the twins looked at the same spot with different reactions. Christian didn't think he could get used to seeing the killing, but if it was for protection, maybe they had no choice.

"If you give us the girl, I'll let you live." The man struggles to say through the choke hold Jace had him in.

"You're in no position to be making rules." The man swings the back of his head and hits Jace stumbles back and grunts. Simon continues to stare at his friends with uncertainty as they look at the fighting, until it ends with the sword through the man's front.

"Jace!" Clary yelps as she runs away from Simon and to Jace who was still invisible. "Is he dead?" She asks Jace.

"Well I think he is dead. He just stuck a sword through him. Was he a circle guy?" Christian says to Clary before asking Jace.

"Is who dead? A circle what now?" The body of the man then deglamorizes becoming clear for the Fray's mundane friend to see. "What the..."

"Could you deglamorize or whatever, so my best friend doesn't think we're losing our minds?" Clary asks Jace who then did as she said by deactivating his rune.

"Um, what is happening?"

"Yeah, we don't have that luxury right now, kid. Everyone back inside."

"Clary, who is this? Your meth dealer?"

"He's not a meth dealer, why would we do meth?" Christian wonders.

"Christian, we've seen this guy before." Clary interrupts. Christian looks down closely at the man and then looked with a frown. "At the police station? Right, Christian?"

"Yeah." He says with sadness in his voice, he couldn't help but think about Luke, what he was doing and if he was thinking at all about his family.

"He's a member of the Circle, he's here for the both of you." Jace tells her.

"He's with the people who took my mother."

"Right, your little best friend here led him right to you. He's here to capture or kill you."

"Hey, Simon didn't know what he was doing. He just wanted to make sure we were okay." Christian defends the mundane.

"There's a dead body there, we have to call Luke."

"No. No chance." Christian says with a glare.

"We can't trust Luke, Simon. We just can't." Clary looks up at her brother who looks to the ground without staring at anyone. She figured Christian would be angry at Luke, she was upset as well, they known him forever. She knew how much he wanted to go to Luke and have him help, but he wasn't an option anymore.

"Clary, I need to keep you safe. I promise you, I promise I am gonna help you find your mother. But you two are one of us. You're shadowhunters." Jace says as he looks at both the twins. Of course Christian knew the logical option was to stay with the shadowhunters, they knew exactly what they had to deal with and could explain to the twins what was happening to them.

"What are you talking about? Clary... you don't know this guy, all right? Come with me. I can get us help."

"Clary, please."

"Clary come on. Christian tell her that it's crazy to go with this guy. You know that right? You guys have to come with me." Christian stared at the mundane who had his heart and it hurt to see how much it mattered to him, how much it was Clary. Such a stupid crush, and a terrible option to go with if they wanted to survive in this world.

"Clary, you know what we have to do." He tells his sister.
