23. Vivian

A loud thud shattered the silence like thunder. Blindingly light pierced my eyes, almost blurring my vision. Staying in the dark took a toll on me. It was difficult to adjust in with the suddenly brightened surroundings.

"Viv!"

"Vivian, are you in there?"

"Raul? Aaden?" I whispered in a hushed voice.

Did they find me? Or am I just hearing voices?

I lifted my head and looked around, but there was nobody in front of me. I wanted to get up and run towards the direction of those familiar voices, but my legs and wrists were still bound together.

Helpless. Pathetically helpless. That was how I flet in that moment. There wasn't much strength in my body to begin with. I was way too tired and lifeless and my legs had gone numb.

Approximately five minutes passed and I didn’t hear any more voices. Nobody was shouting my name. Nobody was looking for me.

It was just another hallucination, I guess.

Rafe fed me something forcefully, and I have no idea what it was. It was some sort of drug. But I wasn't sure which one. There were plenty of drugs that cause hallucinations. It could be any drug.

A small laugh escaped my lips as tears started streaming down my eyes, wetting my paper dry cheeks, covered with dust.

Then, I heard the faint sound of footsteps. It was very light and it felt as if somebody was walking cautiously to avoid raising suspension.

I closed my eyes and this time, didn't let the hope of seeing Aaden or Raul take root in my heart. It was way too painful when it never came true.

"Vivian!" Aaden yelled.

I glanced around and my eyes met with his piercing blue eyes.

"Aaden," I said.

He was frozen on the spot then, he ran towards me. His eyes scanned my dishevelled form, stopping on my face.

"Who hit you?" He asked, looking worn out and exhausted.

"Are you really here?" I stared at him, not quite believing my eyes.

"I am."

He touched my face gently and then tried to untie the ropes around my wrists. But the knots were way too tight, refusing to budge. Without wasting a minute, he took out a razor-sharp from his pocket, and started cutting the ropes with force.

A long time later, my wrists and ankles were free. I stood up as soon as the ropes left my skin. But my legs gave up. I lost my balance, almost toppling on the floor.

A strong arm wrapped around my waist and held me steady. My face came closer to Aaden's then, he held me tight in his arms, close to his chest.

I buried my face in his chest, letting his warmth seep into me.

He was here.

He was really here.

He came here for me.

Tears burst from my eyes, and I let them fall, not bothering to act strong. I was done with this fucking place. I wanted to go home, and stay by Aaden's side.

"It's alright," he whispered, caressing my back to provide me comfort.

"Let's go away. Let's go back home."

The words barely came out of my throat as I choked on tears.

"I'll take you away. Far Away. I promise."

"Viv!" Raul’s looked at me and Aaden.

Aaden let me go as Raul came rushing towards me.

"I'm gonna kill that bastard." He clenched his hands into fist, hugging me tightly.

I hugged him back and didn't say a word.

"Somebody is coming this way," Aaden said. "Only one person," he added.

Raul stood in front of me like a shield, and I was hidden behind his back.

"It's Rafe."

"What?" Aaden loaded his gun.

"He comes here sometimes. Alone. Just to mock me." I gritted my teeth.

"He's gonna pay for keeping you as a captive here." Raul’s eyes were ice-cold. "Aaden closed the warehouse door. Let's act as if Viv is alone here. And we haven't killed the guards stationed outside."

"You're right. Our men have already attacked D'Angelo's residence. So, no help will come here even if Raphael tried to contact them."

He hastily walked away and within seconds everything turned dark again.

"R-raul."

"I'm here." He patted my head, reassuring me.

I stood close to him, and Aaden joined us soon.

We were as quiet as stone pillars. Our breathing was the only sign that we were alive.

"Still waiting for my dear brother?" Rafe laughed.

Then, the small fluorescent bulb lit up and a pale yellow light filled the warehouse.

"Not any longer," Aaden sneered.

"Aaden! How the fuck did you find this place." Raphael moved a step backwards.

Fear was starkly visible on his chalk-white face.

Aaden walked towards him, pointing his gun straight at Rafe’s heart while Raul glared at him like a lion, ready to tear him apart.

There was no escape for him. He was trapped in his own damn trap.

He wanted to enjoy watching me suffer and hurt Aaden by using me. But his plan was crushed by Aaden and Raul’s surprise entry at his secret hideout.

I was no longer his captive. And he was all alone without any guards to protect him.

"I'm not scared of you. Kill me. Now!" Rafe yelled at the top of his voice. "Two against one. Very fair. Very fair. Even one of my arms is fractured! You broke it, remember?" He laughed.

There was something wrong with him. He looked like a maniac who had lost his mind and failed to comprehend things with sanity.

"You brought this upon yourself." Aaden's grip tightened around the gun. His finger inches away from the trigger.

"You must be pleased after seeing me like this right?"

"What the fuck are you talking about?"

Suddenly, Raul pounced on Rafe, and tackled him on the ground as his fist crashed against his jaw.

"If you had hurt me, I might have let you go, but you went after my sister." Raul hit his nose with his knuckles as blood pooled out of Rafe's nose.

With that his nasal bone was crushed.

"Raul! Don't waste your time on him," I said. "He isn't worth it. Let him go."

Hearing my words, Raul stopped at once and strode towards me, looking irritated.

Aaden's gun was still pointed at Rafe who was lying on the ground half dead. He groaned in pain, getting up slowly using his functional arm. He went straight towards the stairs.

Aaden adjusted the gun as he moved but his finger never touched the trigger. He just stood there, watching and observing his brother.

Unnaturally strength came into Rafe as he ran up the stairs faster and faster.

Raul wanted to chase after him, but I stopped him. "Don't," I told him.

I silently watched as Rafe ran up, and then, his foot got entangled in an electric wire. Suddenly, the main electricity circuit caught fire and flames erupted into the air. The dried hay and wood in the warehouse started catching fire. Rafe fell from the stairs as smoke started filling the air.

"Come on. Let's get out of here," Raul shouted.

He led the way and Aaden and I followed him. We didn't turn back to see what happened to Rafe, but by the time we reached a safe distance away from the abandoned warehouse the whole place was on fire.

Nobody followed behind us. Rafe was still inside that warehouse.

Aaden watched the flames with a complicated expression which I couldn't decipher. I don't know why, but I stood beside him and watched the fire. Once the flames died out, we went to examine the remains.

Raphael was burnt to death, choked by smoke. Even his remains weren't left. He was turned into nothing just mere ash.

"Aaden," I said, breaking the silence.

"I'm fine." He passed me a smile.

I went closer to him, and gave him a tight hug.

Raul coughed and said, "If you two are done then, let's go home."

"Raul, you know about us?" I asked

"I do. Also, I don't mind you being with him. But Aaden Marino, if you ever hurt her, I'll kill you," he warned, glaring at Aaden as a smile appeared on his lips.

He turned his back towards us and strode towards the car. We walked behind him, sticking close to each other. Sitting in the back seat, we intertwined our fingers throughout the ride, never letting go.
