Chapter 25
June, 1758
I stare at my precious twins as they play on the ground as I was reading a book. They were the very picture of happiness and innocence. Haley smiles up at me with her big smile. I smile back at my daughter, "Hi little one," I say and she giggles.
"Mama," she says and holds out her arms for me to pick her up. I close my book and I pick her up and I kiss her cheek. Nathan looks up and I could see that he was jealous. I chuckle and I pick him up as well. He smiles brightly and both my babies lean their heads against my chest. I run my fingers through their curly dark hair and I kiss the tops on their heads.
"Mama loves you both so much," I tell them and they both look up at me with their big brown eyes. I smile down at the twins and they close their eyes and they eventually fall asleep, "I pray that your daddy is safe..."
Shay' pov
Louisburg June, 1758
I man Captain James Cook's ship as we sail into battle in Louisburg. What an opportunity to man this magnificent ship. With us, we other ships that sailed with Captain Cook.
"Wolfe, Lawrence, and Whitmore lead three divisions of the Royal Navy," James informs us about the Royal Navy.
"Who's their commander?" I ask.
"Major General Amherst himself, back from Hanover," James says.
"You take an intrest in the war, Shay?" Haytham asks me and I shrug.
"Wouldn't want to disappoint you, sir," I tell him. As we sail the French fleet starts attacking us. I signal the crew to use the canons the the mortars to try to sink the French fleeet. Once we sink the ships that were attacking us, smaller ships come toward us but they were on fire.
"Dear God! Fireships!" James exclaims as he was worried about what they could do to our ships, "Should they break through they would devastate kur fleet!"
"We better not let that happen," I say then Gist points out another ship in the distance.
"I recognize that vessel, sir. It's the Experto Crede," Gist says, more to Haytham.
"Adéwalé! How fortunate he is that we have other priorities," Haytham says with hate and bitterness in his voice.
"Agreed, we have to get rid of those fireships," I say. I use the mortars to sink the fireships to prevent them from getting any closer. It didn't take too long to sink them. The more ships came.
"More enemy ships, sir!" Gist saya to me, "and more fireships,"
"This is hopeless," James sighs, "Perhaps it would be wiser to fall back," he says as he was ready to give up. I scoff and shake my head.
"War and wisdom don't always mix, captain," I tell James, "This isn't over yet lads! Man the cannons!" I shout to the crew. I sail the ship towards the enemy vessels. I ordered the crew to fire the mortars since they were strategically better to use, but I had them use the cannons on the ships that got too close. Just as more enemy ships came our way, the Royal Navy arrives and they start shooting mortars at the French fleet.
"There's the Royal Navy! We cleared the way just in time, Captain Cormac!" James says happily.
"The tide of war is turning!" Gist says.
"That was quite the crack, wasn't it?" I chuckle.
"It is too soon for celebrations, Adéwalé is still out there," Haytham points out as he looks away from the battle and then at us.
"I'm sure we'll get another turn to dance with him, Master Kenway," I try to reassure Haytham. I them sail Captain Cooks ship back to mine was anchored and Gist and I board my ship again.
"Master Kenway seems determined to destroy Adéwalé," I make an observation of Haytham as I take the wheel of the Morrigan.
"Aren't you?" Gist asks with a scoff, "He's a powerful man in his own right, and a symbol of hope for the Assassins," Gist explains, "Eliminating him would shake them to their core,"
"It would, I know," I sigh. I felt some sort of guilt for having to kill Adéwalé, "But it seems a shame. He's a good man, Gist,"
"So was the elder Washington," Gist retorts, "And Smith, I rather enjoyed drinking with him. Wardrop too, though the man could not hold his liquor," Gist chuckles, "He and Weeks never got along, you know," it seemed like Gist was trying to guilt me further since Kathryn and I killed the three men that he was talking about.
"If you're trying to test my conscience, Gist, you've succeded," I sigh.
"We live in a time of war, Shay, but it's always wartime for us," Gist reminds me and then he chuckles once again, "I sound like my Uncle Jedidiah, he was an old sourpuss! Let me tell you-"
"Another time, Gist," I interrupt him since, quite frankly, I didn't really want to hear another one of his stories.
"Aye, sir," Gist nods.
"We best sail back to New York," I tell Gist, "She should be their when we end Adéwalé,"
"Right you are, Shay," Gist agrees.
Two days later
Kathryn's pov
I had peace and quiet in the house since the twins were taking their afternoon nap. I let out a content sigh as I close my eyes. Just as I felt like I was about to fall asleep, my peace and quiet was interrupted my the front door opening.
I open my eyes and I smile brightly when I see Shay. Once he closes the door, I run and jump into his arms. My legs wrap around his waist and I kiss him deeply.
"Shay.." I breathe out. Shay chuckles and he smirks at me.
"Someone missed me," he teases and he looks into my green eyes. I bite my bottom lip and I start playing with his dark brown hair.
"Remember that I told you that I would give you a present when you come home?" I whisper in his ear. I earn a deep chuckle from him.
"Aye, how could I forget," he smirks. His hand then slides down to my ass and he squeezes it. I let out a soft moan and I kiss his lips once again.
"Let us go to our room and I will give you your present then.." I say and I jump down. I take his hand and then I lean him to our room where we had an eventful afternoon in bed.
