Chapter Two

I marched up to the first wolf I found and hissed, "Where can I find MASON?"
The she wolf was too shocked to respond, so I growled and moved forward to an unfamiliar snow-white wolf. "Hey! Where can I find a MASON?"
The white wolf--- who, strangely, was male--- eyed me with skeptical honey brown eyes like I was no more than I bug.
Then he looked down on me like he was royalty greeting his peasants. "I am Mason."
The breath shot out of my lungs like I'd been punched in the gut.
"Y-you?"
I quickly regained my composure and puffed out my chest to looks stronger--- although he was WAY bigger than me. The back of my head nearly touched my back to look into his face. I felt like I was talking to a tree.
"Well, I wanna talk to you!"
He stepped closer to me which almost snapped my neck. He narrowed his glowing eyes at me challengingly. "Oh yeah?" I swallowed, but continued to make myself look as threatening as possible. "YEAH." I was pleased with the low and challenging hiss in my voice. We didn't break our stare for a moment, until Mason stepped back and laughed at me.
I raised my brows at him in surprise. "And just what are you laughing at?!"
He smiled at me and I averted my eyes in attempt to avoid flushing. "You." He answered.
"This is exactly how your father described you'd be." He chuckled and turned his back, but still looked at me with that dumb grin. "I look forward to being your Alpha." He winked and strode away, leaving me standing there in shock... And still fighting a strong blush.

I had a moment to myself to blow off some steam before I went after Mason again. "Hey! I'm not done talking to you, mister!"
Mason turned from his conversation with a grey wolf, I think his name was Thorn, and turned to look at me with dulled eyes. "You again, huh?"
"YES, me, you twig-head. What gave you the impression that this conversation was over, huh?"
He seemed to think it over mockingly in his head before he said, "Um, I'm pretty sure it was when you just stood there after I left."
I hardened my glare. "Well you were WRONG. Now listen up! This is MY pack and IM it's current beta!" He lowered his head down to my level. "Is that so?"
His expression looked amused. I set my jaw. "Yeah! I have no doubt that my father will survive this-- he's far too strong to die that easily. And IM his daughter! So back up."
Mason straightened his back so that he towered over me again. "Listen, shrimpy. I understand you're the Alphas daughter, and I respect that. But your DADDY has granted ME with the privilege of being the alpha after him. I think we can all agree that you aren't yet ready to lead an entire pack on your own. Consider yourself lucky that I leave you beta behind me and not appoint you as omega."
He grinned like he'd owned me (which he DIDNT) and turned to leave again. But I wasn't about to let him off that easily. "Hey! Where do you think you're going?!" I jumped after him, but was flung back as the large white butthead turned back around. "I'm done talking to you," I cringed at the authority in his voice. "And that means STOP."
I didn't move. Mason took that as a sign and left without another word. I hated myself for trying to cry then. He didn't deserve to have won. How could my dad give the pack over to that arrogant jerk?
There was no way I could let such a jerk head lead our pack. I needed to talk to my father about this--- I was sure he was unaware of what a turd he'd appointed our "leader."
There was no way he'd purposely picked such a wad bag. I snorted and turned to go to my father. I pushed brusquely past subordinate wolves until I'd reached my dad's cave. Just before I stepped inside, I heard voices--- they sounded familiar.
I froze and hid around the corner, listening to them as their conversation echoed inside the cave.
"I knew she wouldn't accept you right away, Mason. Give her some time."
What...? Dad and Mason?
"I know, alpha... But she's a fighter."
"I'm aware. She is my daughter, afterall." I heard him chuckle weakly. Then cough. I bit my lip. My heart pounded as I heard claws clanking on the rock--- Mason was coming back out. I flinched and hid around the corner, watching as he emerged from the cave.
But midway away from the cave, he stopped and froze there. I frowned.
What was he doing? Slowly, he turned but didn't face me. "Sandy, what are you doing?"
My heart stopped and I leapt out of my hiding place. "Me?! What are YOU doing here?"
He turned around fully, and I had to look up at him again. Freaking mountain. He was smiling, amused. I growled. He only laughed at me. BAD MOVE, JOE.
I showed my teeth, taking on the posture of a TRUE alpha. I smiled inwardly. This oughta show him what I'm made of. But then, he surprised me. He submitted.
He brought his head lower than mine--- which was pretty much him laying down--- and dropped his stare. My next move was stupid.
His submission caught me off guard, and I relaxed. Mason saw this as an opening and in an instant, I was pinned in the grass, beneath his freakishly large white paws. The air escaped my lungs like I'd been punched when I hit the ground and my eyes widened in shock as they met his. He was smirking at me.
I bared my fangs and an instant later, I was on my feet, and Mason was thrown far, landing on his paws, but sliding across the dirt. There was a pause as I caught my breath--- because he was HEAVY--- and he straightened his back, smiling at me. "Not bad," he breathed. "Not bad at all, Sandy." With a nod of his head, he turned away from me and left. 'Damn, he did it again...' I thought. How did this wolf always manage to catch me so off-guard and turn away like it was nothing? No wolf had ever managed to get anywhere close. Why was that?
