"Father!" I could hardly believe what I was hearing. My father COULDN'T be dying--- he just couldn't! Without thinking, I pushed the omega who'd broken the news to me away, streaking like a bolt of lightening across the camp and to the cave where my father lay.
The instant I entered, the wolves gathered inside around my father cleared out, leaving me alone with my broken heap of daddy.

Nervously, I crept towards him, watching the slow rise and fall of his chest. "... Dad...?" I whispered as I came to his side, a veil of tears blurring my vision.
He looked at me without moving his head. "... Sandy."
I swallowed at the weak and defeated way he spoke my name.
"Father what happened to you...?"

He swallowed and struggled to speak in response, "H-hunters. They... Shot me pretty good, Sand..."
"Please tell me you'll be alright, dad..."
Somehow he managed to shake his head. "The medicine wolves can keep me alive for a little while... But my body is shutting down, Sandy. I-I've lost... A lot of blood..."
I bit my lip.
"No, you can't die...! You can't..." Uncontrollably, I fell down to his level, and began to cry into his fur. "Please, dad..."
His breathing grew labored for a brief moment before he spoke again, "Sandy, listen. This is important... B... Because I don't have much time left... Someone has to take over as Alpha for me."
My grey eyes widened. "W... What? But, Dad, I'm not ready...!"

"I know you're not... That's why I've picked someone else."

My heart stopped.
"You... You what?!" My voice grew louder and echoed off the cave walls.
"Sandy..."
"You know what?! No! I'm going to prove it to you! AND this 'take over' wolf! What's her name?!"
"Uh, I-it's a male, M-mason, but Sandy, I..."
"I'm going to show HIM what I'm made of and take what's MINE!"
Without a second thought, I burst out of the cave and marched across our camp, in search of this, "Mason" character.
