They stood by their point, even when the pocket of the fighter whose defeat is sought after by the public became thicker than that of the one walking away from the cage victorious.

Truth is, there's nothing quite as strong as hope when it comes to humans. Faith in probability, in luck and chance — what better to define us than that which cannot be pinned down nor trusted? Nothing comes quite as close to being synonymous with "human" as the unreasonable and almost idotic hope that the crippled dog, beat to pulp and stomped on until bleeding, will get up in the end and show the big, old fools barking what a real champion looks like. The dream of justice, of fairness, of humanity. We dream of ourselves, idealised and hope that we, the unrelenting and the good, still exist.

MIN YOON-AH USED TO BE THE DOG in the saying, and more often than not, she wished she hadn't won right at the end, that she hadn't walked out of the games, blood still fresh on her hands, with money to her name only to find herself kneeling by a grave with the dirt no longer fresh.

Four years ago, she learnt through need that the people would pay more to see her lose a boxing match than they would to see her win it. Four years ago, she took beating after beating without even coming close to covering the hospitalisation fee of her brother and the rent on their apartment. It's been four years since playing Ddakji on the subway platform, just as long since signing herself up for what had initially sounded like her last chance to help her brother, only to soon turn into a massacre.

Four years. And it's been only two since she found one winner who agrees with her — the games have to stop.

AKA . . .          Seong Gi-hun and Min Yoon-ah, past winners of the games, find in each other more than just a partner for scheming, unexpectedly so.

AUTHOR'S NOTE |   
• Did I binge season 2 on New Year's Eve and on the first day of the year? Yes. Yes, I did. Was I immediately hooked? Absolutely. Was I highly entertained? Yepppp. Did the ending make me feel like I hate this show though? YESS. Because what do you mean you end a season without even finishing off character arcs, especially when the standard set by season 1 was so high aka a complete story. But alas, I digress. I had time to think since and giving me time to think is the recipe for fanfic, and now we are here — me, in love with the show too much to hate it for a bad season ending, and this book, the offspring of my undying faith in the goodness of humanity. Let's see how that goes.

• There will be some modifications brought to the games in Act III, since the oc being there will switch some stuff up in terms of teams and dynamics. The biggest change will be the Front Man's cover story in the group. Gotta spice it up a little, can't have you all know everything, it would be too boring. Also, some characters will get some extra detail, cause I want more meat on the bone than what we were given.

• Yes, yes, a Gi-hun fic because I am a simp at heart. It is what it is, we gon have to deal with it.
