Chapter 9: Red velvet cake

Robin

"Ms. Davis, a man named August Foreman is here to see you." Kelly says and I look up from my desk.

"He's fifteen minutes late. I shouldn't let him in at all."

"So do I tell him to leave?"

"No, send him in."

She leaves and a minute later returns with August. His hands in his pocket as he steps inside my office.

I grab my purse and stand up. "Turn back around." I tell them and they begin walking back out as I close the door.

"Why? Where are we going?" Kelly asks.

"August, you remember why you're here, correct?"

He scratches his head, "Uh yeah, something about cake." He says and rubs his eyes.

Based on the eye boogers and sleepy eyes, I can tell he has just woken up. Which I didn't understand since it was already one in the afternoon.

I roll my eyes and start walking out of the building. They follow behind closely. "We're visiting a pastry chef and a few bands for Marie's wedding. She wants us to work together, so I've come up with a simple solution. I handle the big stuff, and to please Marie and Damien, we handle the little stuff together. Got it?"

He shrugs, "The least time we spend together the better."

"Awesome."

We get in the car, I take the driver's seat, Kelly sits in the passenger's seat and August sits in the backseat. Since the bakery isn't far from here, it isn't going to take long. When we arrive, I look back and see August has fallen asleep.

I turn the car off and throw a penny from the cup holder at his head. "Wake up, doofus."

He groans and throws it back at me as he rubs his eyes and gets out of the car.

"Next time you're asleep I'm going to throw a penny at your head, see how you like it." He says as we walk inside.

I grin, "How stupid of you to think I would fall asleep around you.

I talk to the person in the front about the appointment I have with their top chef and they send us to the kitchen. Kelly and I talk with the pastry chef as August stays in the front flirting with a short brunette woman.

Once we have finally told him the details about everything, I keep supervision of the process close by. Kelly and I get a coffee after an hour or so and when we return, a gasp escapes both of our lips.

"Is that chocolate fudge cake?" I ask, angrily.

The chef stops placing the icing on it and turns to us. "Yes, is that a problem?"

"Of course it's a problem! I specifically said red velvet. What happened to the red velvet cake? We weren't gone any longer than fifteen minutes!"

Before we left, there had been a beautiful five layer cake with roses around the red velvet cake. It was the perfect representation of what Marie and Damien had told me they wanted. Now it was this awful monstrosity.

"Well, that one wasn't very appealing. I'm used to choc-"

"The boss said red velvet, so make a goddamn red velvet cake!" Kelly shouts and I stare at her in shock.

The chef stares at her with the same shocked expression and Kelly points to the back. "Well? Are you just going to stand there, get to work!"

He takes the cake and quickly strides to the back. Kelly moves a strand of her hair from her face and begins walking back to the tables in the front. I follow behind her and when we sit down, I smile.

"Kelly!"

She looks up and wipes her forehead. "I am so sorry Ms. Davis, it's just I really, really, like red velvet cakes. They bring out the worst in me."

I touch her shoulder and stare at her happily. I've never been more proud of her. Holding my heart with my other hand, I shake my head, "Don't you dare be sorry, Kelly! I've never been more proud of you." I dab a napkin at my eye, "My baby's growing up." I mumble and she laughs.

She nods and shakes her arms. "You know, I'm kind of liking this feeling. Feels liberating. Exciting, you know?"

"Yes, I remember that feeling. It was a feeling I'll never forget." I look at the ceiling to appear as if I am remembering it.

For the next two hours, Kelly and I speak about her new found fierceness and how to act on it as August flirts with a group of women that has now formed around him.

When the chef is finally done and has made the red velvet cake, I pinch his cheek as Kelly starts carrying it to the car.

"Now was that so hard?"

He half smiles, "No." He mumbles.

He was most likely only around seventeen, so I couldn't be too hard on him. I was also in a good mood.

I slap his face lightly, "Don't ever let someone you don't know touch you. It's unsanitary and you can get sick." I say before walking away.

"Come on, Jackass!" I yell to August, walking out of the shop and hear him jog up behind me seconds later.

He walks to the side of me, "You know I was this close to getting the hot brunette's number."

I unlock the car and laugh at his obliviousness. "She's got a kid." I say, getting in the car. Kelly takes her spot in the passenger's seat and sets the cake on her thighs. Once August is in the backseat, I start the car.

"What the hell are you talking about?"

"The brunette. She's got a kid."

"How do you know that?"

"Her phone was ringing non stop from a contact name, 'my son' with a baby picture as the contact photo. That's either her son or she's a psychopath. Considering the women you go for, I wouldn't put the second option past her. "

He scoffs and sits back. "What if it's not? Who has their son's name as, 'My son' for their contact name, anyway? Basic as fuck."

"Basic is not exactly the correct term I would use. Unoriginal, boring, typical, yes? But basic no. Basic is not always a bad thing." I correct him and see him roll his eyes through the rear-view mirror.

"One look at you and anyone can tell you don't get any dick."

I frown, "I'm not going to let a man who sings Taylor Swift everytime he walks in the gym ruin my mood. Besides, why are you so obsessed with my sex life anyway? I'd much rather stick to this than screwing random waitresses every two
days. " Jada comes to mind, and I grow irritated. "Aren't you supposed to be dating, Jada?"

"She hasn't responded to me in three days. I knew what she was about the night we went on a date."

I don't reply and he grows silent. I didn't feel an ounce of sympathy for him, as many women he has played with and broken. It was about time he got his pay back.

We make it to the office and August thinks he is free to leave. I inform him we still have to listen to potential bands for the wedding and he groans but cooperates. Once everything is good to go, Kelly, August and I take a seat in the conference room.

The first person is only a singer and the minute she begins singing, August bursts into laughter. I throw a pen at his head and he looks at me like he has done nothing wrong. After listening to her sing a little longer, I cannot take it anymore and send her out.

Next is another singer with a guitar. He starts playing the guitar in a slow rhythm and I grow fascinated. The man sings and I smile, liking the song. But when I turn to Kelly and August, they are holding a thumbs down.

"Oh come on, he was good!"

They don't budge, and I roll my eyes before sending the man out. The next three are a violinist, another guitar player and a whistler. They all don't fit the theme of Marie and Damien's room so it is automatically a no.

When a beautiful woman with a short dress walks in, she begins singing awfully. Kelly and I cover our ears as August nods happily. I rolled my eyes again before sending her out.

About an hour goes by filled with loud and awful music until I decide to stop them and resume tomorrow. I glance at August and see he has dozed off in the chair. Picking up the nearest item, a highlighter, I throw it at his neck and he jerks up hastily.

"You can leave now." I tell him, rubbing my eyes.

He stands up with a yawn and we give each other the middle finger before he leaves. Exhaling deeply, I lay my head on the table.

Kelly chuckles and stands up, "Diet Pepsi and sandwich coming right up boss." I smile as she walks away.

I don't know what I'd do without that weird girl.
