Chapter 6: Range Rover
Robin
I lock my car and walk inside the coffee shop. This was going to be a quick stop since I needed to be to work in about thirty minutes.
I almost immediately spot Marie and Damien sitting at one of the tables near the door. I had told them to meet up with me here to ask some more questions about the wedding.
I sit down and they look up from talking to each other.
"Hey, girl!" Marie says
"What's up, Robin."
I nod and take my folders and binder out in a hurry, "No time for greetings. I have a meeting in forty minutes and have to meet a photographer who I hired two weeks ago in two hours."
Marie chuckles and they sit up straight. "Alrighty then, ask away."
"Awesome. I've already established the theme for your wedding. I'm thinking bright colors, streamers, things like that. How's that sound?" I said moving my hands. People often said I spoke with my hands but I don't quite believe it.
They nod, "Sounds good."
"Fantastic. This should be a whole lot quicker than. I'm just going to ask you guys questions about your honeymoon. I know that isn't necessarily the ideal order of planning the wedding but at the moment I'm still in the process of working on another wedding since your wedding was so unexpected I didn't have time to prepare."
"I'm sorry about that, Robin. We were just so excited." Damien says and I wave a dismissive hand.
"Don't be sorry, it's my job. Now let's get started, first question, what type of mood do you want to set for your honeymoon? Are we thinking, sexy, get alone time together or meet new friends, have fun type of thing?"
They turn to each other and discuss it as I pull my pen out of my bag and search for my phone. About five minutes pass and they have finally discussed it.
"Definitely sexy." Marie leans forward and whispers in my ear, "We're going to have s-e-x." She giggles and I nearly gag.
"Marie, sweetheart, I am so happy you found someone but I do not want to hear about you guys having sex okay?"
She nods still giggling and Damien laughs with her.
"So you said, sexy? Awesome. There's unlimited options for that kind of honeymoon . You could stay at a hotel, rent a suite, a deserted island, anywhere. But first, how long do you plan on having your honeymoon. Most newly weds leave from around a week and a half to three weeks. "
"Two weeks." Damien instantly responds and Marie nods in agreement happily.
For the next fifteen minutes I ask Marie and Damien more questions regarding their honeymoon and once I've gotten all the information I needed right now I begin packing up just as August shows up.
I groan at the sight of the disgusting man and he turns to me with a glare.
"Fuck, I didn't know she-devil was here."
I scoff, "As if I wanted you here, you pathetic excuse for a man."
"Someone's mad no wants to be in a relationship with you. I don't blame 'em. I mean look at you, the only thing you do for fun is go to the gym."
So not true. Okay maybe a little bit. Alright that's all the way true but who cares.
"I don't see how Jada could lower her standards so much. You're practically a walking red flag. Your name is August and you play basketball. That's basically the definition of a red flag."
I was still baffled on why Jada would possibly be in a relationship with August. She was one of my best employees, one of the people I favored amongst everyone else.
I knew August was only dating her to spite me. She wasn't his type. From all the constant stories I hear him tell his friends in the gym and his previous girlfriends, he liked them all up under his shoulder. A woman that didn't have her own opinions, listened to everything he said, basically acted as if he was better than her. Jada wasn't like that, or at least I thought she wasn't. Perhaps that was just the imaginary personality I made up in my head as I actually had never said a word to her. I often made up imaginary personalities of people before getting to know them. Marie said it was a flaw, but I call it having a great imagination.
He rolls his honey colored eyes for the second time before speaking, "As if your flags are just bright green. You drive a Range Rover Robin. That's all the evidence I need."
I grab my bag and stand up, "I need to go anyway. Unlike you I would much rather be arguing with someone who can at least name all of the states.
"Tell Batman I said hi."
I only glare at him as a response to his corny joke. He smiles, "Get it, because your name is Robin and-"
I walk away, "Yes I get it, it just wasn't funny, August!" I say walking out of the coffee shop.
•••
Gosh that wasn't the longest meeting I've ever attended.
I had sat in that conference room for two hours listening to old men and women go on and on about changing the wedding planning business back to how it was in their days. The only reason I had even allowed them to call that meeting was because they were our biggest sponsors.
I was doing well when I first started Davis & Co but not well enough. I had tons of debt and wasn't getting as many customers as others. My only choice was to start going to sponsors. Now I was doing well and regretted it, but I couldn't just abandon them.
Now I sat at a park waiting for the photographer. This park was Marie and Damiens potential venue but most likely somewhere else since the ballroom was nearby, which was the venue for the Johnson's wedding.
I get off the bench as a tall blonde hair man walks towards me with a camera.
"I'm so sorry miss, the traffic was heavy and-" His blue eyes scan me and his cheeks turn pink, "Wow you are pretty."
He must think I don't know how this goes. Silly, silly, man.
"Thank you." I reply walking past him.
I stand in front of the ballroom doors and he follows. He stands in front of me as I move my hands and says, " I don't have much time today so we're just going to see what you're capable of-" I roll my eyes and lift his head up so he is staring at my boobs instead of eyes. "Eyes up here."
He blushes again and I continue, "We're going to see what you're capable of and then I'm leaving. Got it?"
"Yes ma'am."
The man, who's name I learn is Chris, takes pictures of the park and the front of the ballroom. Throughout the whole thing he flirts with me but I know his whole thing. He's going to flirt with me, show me his nice side until I give him a chance. A few weeks, sometimes months go by and boom, he shows the real him. He stops trying, no more date nights, no more surprises and eventually he cheats on me with a woman he thinks is the one just for him to come running back two weeks later.
He waved me goodbye as I closed my car door. Marie calls as soon as I start the car.
"Yes?" I ask
"Hey girl, what was the photographer like?"
"Eh, he was decent enough for the wedding, that's all I can say. He was flirting with me, but I know his plan. "
"Robin you know, not every man is out to play you. There are good guys out there."
"That is highly debatable, Marie."
"Sure there are! Take Damien for example, he's amazing. Oh, and what about, Jared? He was dece-"
"He cheated on me with my professor. That's nowhere near decent. "
"Yeah but he gave you a beautiful necklace and earrings as an apology. Plus he said he didn't mean it, Robin."
"Marie, if you ask or talk to me about another useless man I hate, I am hanging up." I reply, turning down the street.
"Alright, alright. How's working with August? You guys are getting alo-"
I hang up just as I reach my house.
