Chapter 31: Peasant

Robin

I turn the television off as the credits for Beauty and Beast start to play.

Biting my fingernail, I turn to August. He searches for another movie to watch in the kitchen.

"Foreman." I call out to him.

"Gorgeous." He replies quickly.

"My new employee asked me out for dinner tonight."

His head lifts immediately and a scowl rests on his face. "You're fuckin' with me, right?"

I bite back my smile. "I think I might go. He seems like a great guy, you know?"

August grabs his car keys and begins walking to the front door. "Where are you going?" I ask, standing up.

"Just gonna have a little talk with him."

I rush after him. "You said the same thing about Henry, yet I found out you beat him half to death." I smile. "Not that I'm mad about that."

He doesn't listen, only continues to unlock the door. I laugh and move his hand away. "August, I was kidding!"

He faces me with a glare as he lifts me up. I wrap my legs around his waist and he backs me up against the door. "That's not funny." He mumbles.

My chest already heaving at his closeness, I smile and peck his lips. "I love you." I say, slightly afraid.

"I love you too." He responds and kisses me. I decide to irritate him a little more. I don't kiss him back, which makes him stop and squeeze my hips. "Kiss me back." August grumbles. I smile at the frown that rests on his face.

Cupping his face in my hands, I kiss him. He smiles finally and deepens the kiss. I pull away, still holding his face. "So are we like, in a relationship now?"

"Nah. I'm not really looking for a girlfriend at the moment-"

"Oh, shut up."

He laughs and gazes at me with a smile. After a moment, he kisses my cheek. "You're my girl?"

"Is that your romantic way of asking me to be your girlfriend, August?"

"Yes, Ma'am. What? You don't like it? You want me to get down on one knee and ask? 'Cause I will, if you-"

I laugh and let go of his face, instead wrapping my arms around his neck. "No, no, I like it. It's cute. " I kiss him softly for a moment before pulling away. "I'm your girl."

He smiles. "You're mine?"

I nod. "I'm yours."

He sets me down on the ground and rolls his eyes. "Great. That's another girlfriend I have to take care of."

A glare forms on my face and I move away from him. "You're an asshole." I mumble, walking to my bedroom.

He laughs, following behind me. "I'm joking, I'm joking! It was payback, Robin!"

I roll my eyes as I search my closet for something to wear today. "Leave me alone."

August appears behind my back shortly after I say this. He hugs me from behind. "Come on, gorgeous, you know I'm kidding. You're the only one for me." He says, snuggling his head into the crook of my neck.

He kisses my neck as I try my best to stay mad at him. "How do I know that's true?"

He doesn't answer, only turns me around and lifts me up. I bite back the giggle that wants to escape. August places me on the bed gently and lies between my legs, resting his head on me. My breath hitches when he lifts my blouse and kisses my stomach.

"I told my mom about you." He mumbles after a while.

I frown. "But you rarely speak to her. You said it's hard for you."

He pulls my blouse up higher as I look down at him. "Yeah, I know. You're special though."

"Really?"

My heart. I don't think it's ever felt this way. So whole. I smile softly as August moves up. His head rests on my skin, making me shiver. "I've never said 'I love you' to anyone before. Not until you. And I've never been so deeply in love with someone as I am with you, Robin."

He sits up and points to his heart. "This… this is yours. Every last piece." August cups my face and smiles. "Now you take good care of it for me, okay? 'Cause I don't want it back. I'm yours. All of me. Do you understand that?"

Tears sitting at the corner of my eyes, I nod and smile back. "No take-backs, right?" I whisper.

"No take-backs, baby."

I try to stop the tear that falls, but I can't. God, when did I get this soft?

I sniffle and hold his hand. "Then I'll protect it with my life."

August kisses my cheek and lies back on my stomach. He manages to go about two minutes before I feel him laugh. It vibrates onto my stomach.

"Pussy." He mutters, standing up.

I throw the pillow on the side of me at his face as he continues to laugh. "Dipshit! I didn't use to be such a cry baby, alright?" I respond, pulling my blouse back down.

He grins. "I see you've gotten the 'August effect.' A lot of people have it, don't worry.",

I roll my eyes, standing up with him. "Your intelligence quotient is the equivalent of a pig."

"Babe, I speak English." He replies and frowns when I walk back to the closet. "Where are you going?"

"Marie and Damien's wedding is today, remember?"

He groans and flops on the bed. "Do we have to go to that?"

"August, our best friends are getting married. Of course we have to go. Not to mention, I have to make sure everything goes right. It's my job."

"Dammit. I was planning on fucking you against the wall today."

My head turns immediately at that. I smile as he smirks. "I've always wanted to do that."

August stands up. He rolls the sleeves to his white button-down up, his watch appearing. "I know." He says.

Temptation rises inside of me. "They wouldn't mind if we're a little late, right?"

August unbuckles his belt as he steps closer to me. He chuckles, his voice low, staring at me with pure lust. "We'll be a lot more than 'a little late', sweetheart."

My breathing starts to grow heavy as he stands in front of me. I gasp when he lifts me with one hand, tossing his belt to the side as he walks to the wall. As soon as my back hits it, he kisses me eagerly. August lifts me up higher and grips my ass. He groans when a soft moan escapes my lips. This makes him deepen the kiss. When I start to find it hard to breathe correctly, I pull away.

I push him back, my chest heaving. He stares at me, panting heavily, a dangerous look in his eyes that excites me. "August," I breathe out. "We can't."

He presses his hard-on against me, making my eyes shut. "Why the hell not?" He rasps.

August presses a kiss behind my ear. He squeezes my ass and groans in my ear. My eyes open at the warmth that rolls through my body when he does that. "August." I whimper.

"Say it again, baby."

When he unzips his pants, I get out of his hold, backing away. "August, we can't. We have to be there in less than an hour."

I straighten my skirt out as he stares at me intensely. I can't decide whether he wants to murder or fuck me. Based on the hard-on he has to deal with, I'd go with a mixture of both.

I laugh nervously as he continues to glare at me. I hold my hands out as I back up. "I love you, August. You love me?"

His jaw ticks and his tongue presses against the inside of his cheek. "Yeah." He mumbles.

"Are you mad?" I ask.

He turns away and zips up his pants. August grabs his belt from the bed and puts it back on as he walks to my nightstand.

"Are you mad?" I repeat.

He finally looks up. "No." He says and walks away.

I turn back to my closet and grab a black dress. I fix the room, making sure everything is put away neatly. Around ten minutes later, as I pick up my makeup brush, I hear August walk inside. I turn around and my mouth goes agape. He stands in front of the drawer, water dripping from his hair and toned chest as a towel wraps around his waist.

"Jesus Christ—August, you can't do that." I say frustratedly, not being able to take my eyes off of his chest.

He wipes the top of his nose with his thumb. "Do what?" He asks, a smile making its way to his face.

"You know what you're doing!"

It's almost as if his abs are taunting me. I put my hands behind my back to prevent myself from touching him.

"What?" He asks. August tugs at the towel slowly. "What am I doing, gorgeous?"

That nickname.

God, he knows how flustered I get when he calls me that.

"August."

"What's the matter? You feel like touching me, baby? Go on, touch me."

I exhale a shaky breath as he leans down. "Touch me." He whispers, his breath on my neck.

Not being able to resist any longer, I touch his chest. As soon as I do, warmth goes to my stomach and I move closer. I stand on my tippy-toes and kiss him as my hands start to remove his towel. But as soon as I feel the towel loosen, he backs away.

He smiles and rubs his thumb over my bottom lip. "Robin, we can't. We have to be there in less than an hour, remember?" He says and walks away.

He fucking walks away.

I stand there in pure shock. "Did he- did he really just do that?"

For the next thirty minutes, as I get dressed, I remain shocked. It isn't until I am standing at the front door and my mind is on leaving that I return to normal. "August, come on!" I shout, tossing my purse over my shoulder and grabbing the binder for Marie and Damien's wedding service.

When he doesn't appear in the hallway, I shake my head. "Okay, I'm leaving!"

"Nah, give me a second." He replies, and I hear his footsteps in the kitchen. "How the fuck are you supposed to put a tie on?"

"Here, let me do it." I begin walking to him and when I step into the kitchen, he looks up from the tie. His eyes trail down my body and his mouth goes agape. It isn't until I touch his tie that he closes it.

August smiles as I start fixing his tie. "Fuck it. Let's get married."

I laugh as a response, but as I think more about what he said, a smile forms on my face. I look down, unsure of his reaction to the question I'm about to ask.

"Would you… ever want to do that? With me?"

You just got together today and you're already talking about marriage, Robin?

I've never liked the idea of marriage. It has always seemed like a thing that breaks up couples. It breaks the love they once had for each other. They force each other to change just because they feel like they have to.

But the idea of marrying August didn't seem like a bad idea to me. Of course not anytime soon, god no. That's a set up for a nasty divorce in five years.

"What?" He asks. I glance at him through my eyelashes and see him biting the inside of his cheek. "You mean get married?"

I finish the tie and pat his chest. "Yes."

He shrugs. "Would you want to marry me?"

I smile a little. "Yeah."

He doesn't answer, making me grow anxious. I look up at him and see a smile I've never seen before resting on his face. So bright and wide. "You mean that shit, Robin?"

My smile widens and I nod. "Mm-hmm."

August turns away and walks to the counter. Only to turn back around and lift me up for the third time today. I laugh as I wrap my legs around his waist and he showers me with kisses. "You are so fucking adorable, Robin."

I peck his lips before hopping down. Straightening my dress back out, I begin walking to the door. "I am not adorable. Do you know what I've been described as?"

He follows behind me as I open the door. "Beautiful, stubborn, addicting, control-freak, the love of my life-"

"My employees have described me as; Cruel, heartless, irritating, a stupid bitch and terrifying. But guess what? I like it. I like people to be afraid of me." We walk out of the house and August closes the door behind me. "Now come on before we're late."

We get in August's car and he drives as I call the set up crew. We arrive at eleven-thirty. August kisses me and squeezes my hand before we split up. Since the wedding is at noon, we have to set up quicker than usual. Luckily, all we needed to do was the reception room.

We finish just as Marie begins walking down the aisle. I change into a pink bridesmaid dress Marie had chosen, rush out of the reception room and sneak up to the altar, standing on the side of the priest.

When Marie reaches the altar, I tap my earpiece. "I need the flower girl, now. Do you copy?"

"I copy. Flower girl is approaching." Kelly replies through the earpiece and seconds later, Marie's niece starts skipping down the aisle, tossing flowers in the air. I'll have to scold her about skipping too high later.

Once Marie and Damien say their vows, exchange rings and say 'I do', I slip away. I tap my earpiece. "Excellent work, Kelly."

She breathes a sigh of relief. "Oh thank God. I thought I was getting fired today."

"Who said you weren't?"

"Ma'am, I love you, but so help me god, I wish you would stop scaring me like that."

I smile. "The panic in your voice just always fills me with joy."

August

"Here's the thing; I like to party. I like to get so drunk I can't remember anything the next morning. But, Robin doesn't. And sometimes she just wants to sit and do nothing. So if my girl wants to sit and do nothing, guess what I'm gonna do?"

"What?"

"I'm gonna sit and do nothing, with her."

Wade, one of my teammates, shakes his head as he stands up. "So basically, the woman you used to want to run your car over with, has you wrapped around her finger like a goddamn marmoset?"

I take a sip of the wine in my glass and smile. "Damn right."

He walks away as Robin strides to the table. I frown at the glare that rests on her face as she sits next to me. She stares at my wine. "Can I have that?"

"No you cannot." I respond, handing the glass of wine to her.

She drinks it as if it is a shot and sits back in her seat. I place my hand on her thigh. "What's wrong?"

She glances at my hand before bringing her gaze to a blue-haired woman who sits at a table across from us. "Dunderheaded, she-devil." She mutters.

Robin rolls her eyes and I laugh. "All right, why don't we like her?"

She stares at the woman with a death stare. "Tamara Linton. She was Marie's friend. Two years ago, we were having dinner with Marie's family and I went to the bathroom. She used that moment to tell Marie's parents that I was a drug addict and was planning on robbing them. As soon as I stepped out of the bathroom, her father tackled me to the ground and threw me out of their house."

A scowl forms on my face. I face the woman. "Tamara!"

The woman turns to me with a confused expression. "Do I know you?"

"No, but, I know where you live. There's a pack of rats eating your husband alive as we speak."

I don't know where the hell she lives and I don't want to know. But she fucked with my girl and since she wasn't a man, meaning I couldn't bash her head in the goddamn table, this was all I could do.

She gasps, pulls her phone out and rushes off as I laugh. Robin kisses my cheek and whispers 'thank you' in my ear. As I am about to respond, she smiles and pulls my arm, dragging me on the dance floor with her.

"Pretend a woman walks up to you for a dance. Show me how you would react, okay?"

"Okay."

Robin steps back and struts to me as she twirls her hair. "Hey, I was wondering-"

I put my hand on her face. "Be gone. Peasant." I reply.

She laughs against my hand. "Just one dance, honey-"

"I said, be gone, peasant!"

She laughs again and moves away. When she comes closer, I back away. "Alright, that was good." She says and tries to touch me, making me gasp.

I shake my finger at her. "I have a girlfriend, you desperate peasant!

"August, I'm your girlfriend now!"

I scoff and turn away. "That's what they all say, peasant."
