Chapter 21: Beauty & the Beast
Robin
"Shit." I groan as I stand up, my cramps deciding to torture me.
I grab the remote from the table quickly and sit back on the sofa. There is a knock on the door almost as soon as I wrap the blanket around my body.
I shake my head, refusing to answer the door. "If you don't have a key, that means you probably shouldn't be here!" I yell, clicking my favorite movie.
The knocking silences and my door opens. I turn around and roll my eyes, seeing August.
"How the hell did you get a key?"
He walks closer and squints his eyes at my head. A frown forms on his face. "Are you wearing a hoodie?"
I match his frown and touch my head, remembering the hoodie I was wearing. I drop the blanket and stand up. "Yes, it's a jumpsuit."
"That's new. I've never seen you in anything other than pantsuits and skirts."
My eyes water. "You don't like it?"
He steps forward and his frown grows. "Are you about to fucking cry?"
I hit my leg and shake my head. "So you don't like it."
I sit back down on the sofa and he sits next to me. "What? No. I like it. I love it. It looks hot on you. Fuck, Robin, I don't know what to say."
I roll my eyes and cross my arms. "Just leave me alone. You know nothing about women, you pathetic excuse of a man."
"What the f-"
"Why are you here, anyway?"
"I'm always h-"
"We're not having sex. The dragon is breathing her fire."
He leans forward, "What?"
"The monkey has a nosebleed."
"Huh?"
"Are you an idiot?"
He stares at me for a moment, genuinely trying to figure out what I'm saying. After about thirty seconds, his eyes widen and he points to me. "Oh! You're on your lady thing!"
I roll my eyes and wrap the blanket around me. He stands up and paces in front of the television as if I have just told him life changing news. He stops and shoves his hands into his pockets. August opens his mouth to say something but quickly closes it.
I frown in curiosity. "What were you going to say?"
"That's why you're acting so weird, right? Because hormones and stuff, right?"
"What?"
"I promise I was not trying to be a dick when I said that."
I open my mouth to respond, but close it and let my head hit the middle of the sofa, feeling as though someone is digging out my insides with a drill. My head pounds as I wait for the pain to stop, but it only increases.
"So right now, you're cramping r-"
"Oh my goodness, get out!" I say, covering my head with the blanket.
I hear him begin walking away. "I'm taking my key." He replies before shutting the door.
I inhale and exhale deep breaths, waiting for the pain to leave. After some minutes pass, the pain dies down finally. My eyes droopy and body tired, I decide to stay where I am. I doze off for about ten minutes before the door springs open, making me jerk up.
August strides in with multiple bags and a look of determination. "I thought I told you to leave, A-"
"I didn't know what size you were, so I got 'em all."
I sit up and smile. August holds different sizes of tampons and sets them on the table. "What size?" I ask, trying to hold in my laugh.
"Here." He takes a twelve pack of diet Pepsi out of the bag and sets it on the table as well. "I know you love that stuff."
Tears sitting in the corner of my eyes, I smile at him as he goes through another bag. "Thank you." I mumble.
August reveals a small teddy bear and five Hershey's chocolates. He hands it to me. "Women like that stuff, right?"
"Thank y-"
"I also sent you a period playlist. You can listen to that shit when you cry in the shower alone."
"Fuck you." I respond, the smile immediately dropping from my face.
He laughs and tosses a bottle of Advil onto my lap. August walks back to the door and leans against. "Call me if you need anything else, all right?"
"August." I say just as he opens the door.
"Yeah?"
I fidget with the blanket. "Do you want to watch a movie or something?"
"Took you long enough." He replies, shutting the door and rushing to the sofa. He flops down next to me and I put the blanket over his lap. "So, what are we watching? Fast and Furious? Oceans Twelve? What?"
I smile happily and get comfortable as I press play. "Beauty and the Beast."
He turns to me in shock. "Are you serious? This is one of the worst movies I've ever s-"
"Shut up, it's starting."
He sighs but adjusts his body to get more comfortable. August sits standardly, slouching slightly as I rest my head on his lap. He places his hand on my stomach and I am about to protest but decide against it.
August complains when the singing begins and I roll my eyes. Once it stops, he finally shuts up and for the next forty-five minutes or so, he tunes into the movie.
A tear falls down my cheek at one scene. August glances at me and turns back to the movie. He does a double take and his eyes widen when he notices the tear. "Are you crying, Davis?"
"No." I mumble.
He laughs. "You are fucking crying. Emotionless, Robin is crying over a little kid movie. Pathetic."
"He gave her a library, August!"
"After imprisoning her! Seriously, how do people find this romantic? He's a goddamn beast throughout most of the movie, for crying out loud!"
I shake my head and bring my attention back to the movie. "You wouldn't get it."
I manage not to cry anymore for the rest of the movie. Only sniffling a little at the end. When I think August is going to leave, he goes into the kitchen instead. He takes out a bin of oatmeal out of my cabinet as I take a seat on one of the stool chairs.
I lean on the counter. "August." I say as he opens the can, his back turned.
"Yeah?"
"Explain something to me."
"What? If it's why my dick is so big, I wish I could t-"
"When you flirt with me, why is it not utterly unoriginal and corny? Seriously, the one at the coffee shop that day, 'A black coffee and a side you.' I've never wanted to apologize to a waiter that much in my life."
He shrugs. "Because I mean the things I say when I'm flirting with you. With the others, I don't. Simple." He turns to me. "You better eat this shit, Robin. I read an article saying it helps."
I gag, glancing at the oatmeal. "I am not eating that. I'm in pain, not dying."
"I'll tackle your ass if you don't eat it, I promise you."
I stand up and pat my chest. "I'm right here, cunt!"
He strides towards me and that's when I notice how bigger he is compared to me and how much damage he could do, especially right now.
"Okay, okay!" I nearly scream, holding my hands out just as he reaches me. "I'll eat the freaking oatmeal."
He smiles in accomplishment as he walks back to the oatmeal. August cooks the oatmeal for me and I make him eat it with me. A while later, we sit on the porch together. My blanket drapes over our shoulders as we sit in silence and stare at the sky.
"How many do you see?" I ask after a moment.
"What?"
"Stars. How many stars do you see?"
He stares at it for a few seconds before turning back to me. "There has to be about a hundred up there, at least."
"I'd say about three hundred."
"Well, you're wrong."
"No one can identify the actual number of the total stars in the sky. Everyone is just taking an estimation."
"I know. I'm just saying out of both of our estimates, yours is more wrong."
"Me? You would be the wrong one, not me." I stand up and snatch my blanket from off of him. "You know what? My tolerance level is in the sky right now. Meaning you can leave. I want you gone, August."
"Fine then."
When he follows me in the house, I frown. "What the hell are you doing?"
"Grabbing my shoes." He mumbles.
I walk to my bedroom and flop on it tiredly. I toss the blanket I have to the side and get underneath the one on the bed. August stands in the door entrance as I turn to the side.
"All right, I'm about to leave."
I shut my lamp off. "Good."
"I'm going home." He says, sadness in his voice.
"Finally."
"All alone. Just me and Toto. Sleeping all al-"
"If you put your revolting feet on me, I will slit your throat."
He removes his shoes, hops on the bed and lies on the side of me. August wraps his arms around my stomach, pulling me closer. I roll my eyes at how comfortable it feels.
"I hate you."
"You know you love me, Robin." He replies, resting one of his hands on my boob.
