Chapter 2: Coffee shop

Robin

I open the coffee shop door a bit more aggressive than I usually do. Searching for Marie, I glance over at people sitting at the tables and when I find her, I stride to the table where she and an unfamiliar guy are sitting.

"Hey!" Marie greets me cheerfully.

Pfft, do I look like I am in a "hey!" mood to you? I am most certainly in a hey with no punctuation mood.

I shake my head and take a seat across from them. Sitting my bag on the side of my leg before I speak.

"Oh no, do not ,"hey!" me Marie."

"Is there a problem?" The man on the side of her asks.

"I-" Marie is about to respond when the human version of Donald the duck walks in the coffee shop. "That." She finishes, as he walks towards the table.

He takes short strides as if the whole world just goes on his time. Hands in his navy blue sweatpants as he gives flirty smiles to women sipping their coffee.

When he reaches the table, he stops in his tracks, "What the hell? Is this some kind of setup?" He asks, looking between me and the man on the side of Marie.

"That's my problem." I cross my arms, leaning back in my seat as I glare at August.

"You two know each other?" The man asks

"They met at the gym about a year ago and didn't exactly hit it off."

"The correct word would be hate. I hate him and I don't understand how anyone in their right mind could hang around such a disgusting human being. "

"Trust me, the feeling is mutual. "

"Guys, guys, please. Let's just sit down and have a peaceful breakfast without any bickering, okay?"

With one last glare at me, August takes a seat on the side of me. I move away from him as far as possible. When I get to the edge of the seat, I feel someone touch me and suddenly fall to the ground.

Oww

I quickly compose myself. Standing back up, I dust my pants off and turn around, meeting an amused August.

"You're such an asshole. When I get you back it will be vicious." I say angrily, sitting back down.

"Viscous? Who even says that?"

"People with brains, you ignoramus."

Since I needed to be at work in about fifty minutes, I decided to make a few phone calls until the waitress arrived.

When she does, the man and Marie stop talking, August gets off his phone and so do I.

"What would you like to drink, Ma'am?" The brunette waitress asks me.

"A glass of pink lemonade please and one for my friend here as well."

Marie had told me what she wanted before the waitress arrived, since she didn't like ordering most of the time.

"Me too." The guy adds on and the waitress marks it down before turning to August.

"And what would you like, sir?"

He smirks, "A black coffee and a side of you, please."

I roll my eyes as the woman blushes before walking away.

"So unoriginal."

August leans forward, "You're just mad you can't get any." He replies and sits back in his seat, proud of his statement.

"I can get some. I just choose not to be bothered by the male species who cannot even properly wipe their own assholes." I turn to Marie. "Why is he even here again? Shouldn't he be plotting his way into some woman's underwear or something?"

"Damien and I have some exciting news!" Marie squeals. "As you know, we have been in a serious relationship for some time now.

Damien and Marie hold hands and stare into each other's eyes with love. I turn to the side and gag at the image.

"Gross." August and I mumble in sync.

"And yesterday, Damien popped the question. We're engaged!" Marie squeals happily and shoves her hand in my face to show me her ring.

I smile at it, genuinely happy for her, and fake a smile to Damien. They both lean closer, facing us and I smile awkwardly at their closeness "What?" I ask

"We want you and August to plan the wedding!"

You've got to be fucking kidding me.

"What?" August and I both question in disbelief.

"Well, you know, Robin, you're already a wedding planner, so you know about organizing and designing and August is fun and outgoing, so that'll make a perfect wedding. "

"You're kidding? You're fucking with me, right? I can't work with her, Damien." Says August

"As much as I hate to say it, he's right. I cannot possibly work with him. I work professionally and with precise, knowledge, everything he couldn't possibly know of. "

"Look, we're not asking you guys to become best friends or anything. Besides, what better way to plan a wedding than with our best friends doing it. It'll be great!"

I shake my head, "No. Hell no."

"Robin, please. "

I continue to shake my head and Damien turns to August. "Come on, bro, do this for me. "

After a minute, August nods and I throw my hand up in defeat, "Fine."

Oh, just great!

Damien and Marie look over at me with the same pleading expression they were giving August. Marie takes my hand. "Please, Robin, please. You're my best friend, girl."

No, don't do it. This is a setup for disaster, Robin. Do. Not. Do. It.

I sigh, "Alright, I'll do it." I reply and they smile in accomplishment.

I glance at the time on my phone and stand up, deciding I would eat breakfast at work. Placing my bag over my shoulder, I half smile at Marie.

"You're lucky I love you. " I say before walking away.

I take a seat in my chair as my assistant follows behind me shortly after.

"Good morning, boss!"

I rub my forehead, already exhausted, and the day has just begun.

"Don't say good morning, Kelly. If it was a good morning, I would be sipping on champagne as I relax on a yacht."

"I'm sorry, b-"

"In Dubai." I finish.

She moves a strand of her blonde hair out of her face. "I take it you've had a bad morning, Ms. Davis?"

"Yes. " I groan.

I tell Kelly about my morning. Not missing out on a single detail and by the time I am done she is as angry as I am. That was another thing I loved about my job. I had an amazing assistant.

No matter what I know, I can always complain to Kelly. I hired her when I had first created Davis and Co. I had just rented out this building and she worked at the coffee shop. She was a freshman in college at the time trying to pay off debt, and I had seen her almost every time I went. One day I decided to ask her and she agreed.

I used to be quite like Kelly. When I first moved out here from Canada, I had blonde hair, low self esteem and was still rocking my old leggings from middle school. But after my last heartbreak with Jared, a frat boy I met in college, I decided I was going to change myself. I cut my hair, which is now a little below my elbows, dyed my hair dark black, got a tattoo under my boob and right arm, many piercings, and began working out. Once I had changed myself on the outside, I decided to change it on the inside.

With a lot of loans, determination and support from friends and family, I was finally able to start my career.

"I'll help with whatever you need, boss. We're going to give Marie and Damien their dream wedding, even if it means dealing with August!" She encourages.

"That's the spirit! Now tell Steven to come here. I want to know which caterer he has chosen for the Johnson's wedding. "

She nods and rushes off, minutes later returning with Steven.

I sit up in my chair and Steven stands in front of my desk. "Which caterer have you chosen, sweet Steven? I can always count on you to bring me good news. "

"Um, about that, I have not found a caterer yet, Ms. Davis."

Awesome, just frickin' awesome.

Getting up from the chair, I laugh walking towards him, "No?"

"No, Ma'am I am truly sorry. "

"You're sorry?"

I move closer to him and he fidgets with his hands, "Yes, I am very sorry, Ms. Dav-"

"You're fucking sorry? The bride wants to get married two weeks from now and you haven't even found a caterer, Steven! Not to mention the new wedding we just got. "

I tap my heel against the tile floor in frustration. Walking past Kelly and Steven, I make my way to the conference room. "Mandatory meeting!" I order and hear Kelly go to get everyone. I hear people scatter and make their way to the conference room as I stand in front of the chairs, waiting.

Once they have all arrived, I begin, "I have gotten some unexpected news today, so I am not exactly in the mood today. Now I walk into this bullshit! You think I pay you people to do average work. I want the address to a caterer on my desk by the end of the day and everyone needs to get started on the new wedding, got it?"

"Yes." Most of them reply.

"Awesome."

I walk out with that statement being said. Kelly's shoes click against the floor as she follows behind me back to my office.

"Kelly, would you please get my lunch from Subway?" I ask, stepping back inside.

"With a diet Pepsi, boss?"

"Obviously, Kelly, why wouldn't I get diet Pepsi? That's like buying a black pants suit without matching pumps."

She laughs and walks out of my office as I take a seat and begin working. I had gotten mostly everything done on my checklist for the Johnsons. All besides a caterer and band, but I chose not to worry about those now.

I needed to make a plan and checklist for Marie and Damien's wedding. I liked everything to be planned ahead of time and organized, and with August having to work with me, I needed to be extra organized. I create two checklists, splitting the things that needed to be done for their wedding between August and I. I add most of it to mine to be careful in case August messes some things up.

Kelly returns with my lunch and I thank her. For the remainder of the day, I spent my time working on the last few details for the Johnson's wedding, figuring I could officially start Marie and Damien's wedding tomorrow.

Around eleven, I step into my apartment. I kept the lights off as I was going to go to bed a little early tonight. Not before making my favorite, a peanut butter and jelly sandwich.

Once I have made it, I sit at the dinner table. Taking the crust off before I take a bite and smile. The smile fades as I look around at the dark and silent kitchen.

I am so fucking lonely.
