Chapter 10: Vacation begins

Robin

"Kelly, listen to me. It's going to be fine. I trust you. Besides, I won't even be gone for a week. I've left everything you need on my desk."

She mutters something I can't hear, and I exhale a deep breath. Holding the phone with one hand and packing my clothes neatly in the suitcase with the other hand, I try to stay calm.

"Okay, it's not going to be fine. It's going to go horribly wrong and I'm going to lose a lot of customers."

"No, Ms. Davis, remember what we talked about. You have to start being positive, or the stress is going to overwhelm you. The doctor said this can prevent the lu-"

"I know, I know, and I'm trying. But it's going to take a few months."

She gasps, "Months! Ms. Davis-"

"Becoming this optimistic person doesn't just happen overnight, Kelly! I need time. And until then I will be the most pessimistic woman I can be. "

"Ms. D-"

"My company is in your hands until I return, alright? Don't let anyone in my cabinet. I have important and private things in there. Got it? Awesome, I have to go." I hang up just as she is about to reply and toss my phone on my pillow.

I had managed to pack everything I needed for this vacation neatly before Kelly called, so there wasn't much left to do. Now all I needed to do was to get ready.

Two days ago, Marie and Damien called asking August and me to meet them at the coffee shop. By the tone of their voices, I thought it was something serious, so I rushed over. But when I sat down, they were all laughing and smiling. This is when they chose to inform me of the four-day vacation in Los Angeles they had planned for all of us.

They told me it was because they wanted all of us to have a last trip together before they get married. Of course I couldn't say no to my best friend.

We were originally supposed to take a flight, but Marie decided on just renting out a van for the trip. We all agreed I would be the one driving.

With about an hour left until Marie, Damien, and August show up, I double check my suitcase to see if I am fully packed. For the rest of the time being, I work from my computer.

Once they arrive, I load my suitcase and bag in the trunk with everyone else's and take the driver's seat. August sits in the passenger's seat against my will and Marie and Damien in the backseat. As soon as I begin driving, August turns the radio up loudly and I roll my eyes.

"Do you have to turn it up that loud?"

He frowns. "Do you have to be that ugly?"

I scoff. "I am not ugly. You, on the other hand, have the exact features of Donkey from Shrek. In fact, now that I look at you, he might be a little better looking."

"That is fucked up. You didn't have to go that far, Davis."

"And you didn't have to turn it up that loud."

Marie leans forward. "Hey, hey, what are the rules? Do I have to go over them?"

"N-"

"Rule number one; " she starts, despite our groans of disapproval, "There will be no bickering." She says, looking between August and I. August raises his hand in defense and I scowl.

"Well, tell him to stop being such a dick all the time!"

"Tell her to get some dick! Maybe she won't be such a Debby Downer."

"That's what I mean, you guys. None of this going back-and-forth needs to go on during this vacation. This trip is about having fun and getting a break. Alright? Can you guys do that?"

We stay silent and she leans forward more. "Can you?"

"Yes." August and I grumble.

"Great! Number two, absolutely no working."

I look at her through the rear-view mirror with a frown. "What the hell, Marie? I need to work. I have new clients, old clients, they all need me. I can't just forget about my job."

"It's four days, Robin. They'll be fine, girl! Please, no working, just having fun, alright?"

I exhale another deep breath before responding, "Fine, but don't expect me to like it."

For the rest of the trip, I drive, and they all babble about random topics. Around two hours pass and Marie and Damien are asleep. I decided to take a break. August fills up the tank and I go to the gas station store to get snacks. When we are both done, we get back in the car and August chews on his chips as he tells me why apple juice is better than orange. After a while, he dozes off and I drive quietly for the next two hours.

After finally arriving at the hotel, Marie had told me to go. I stopped the car. I shake Damien to wake him up and when he does, he wakes Marie up. They quickly get out of the car and walk into the hotel.

I throw the nearest item, a penny, at August's neck and he jerks up from his sleep. He rubs his eyes and sits up all the way in the seat with a glare. When he holds up his middle finger at me, I twist it and he winces.

"What the hell are you doing?"

"Hey, she said, no bickering, not fighting."

I continue to twist his finger and he lifts his butt up to fart. I immediately back away, but am too late. I gag and roll the windows down at the scent of his awful fart as he stares at me with a smile of proudness.

Covering my nose, I wave the scent in his direction. "Oh my gosh! What do you eat, August?"

"Well, I had a bean and cheese burrito for breakfast this morning."

"Gosh, you stink!"

He shrugs and sits back in his seat. "You brought thunder, so I bought a storm right back."

"That barely even makes sense."

He taps the side of his head with his pointer finger, "To the non wise it doesn't. Think about it."

I look at him in confusion at his buffoonery. At the gym, he always believes he is this wise man that no one can compare to.

Once the stench has finally left, I rest my head on my seat the same way he is and face him. "I hate you."

"You've got a booger in your nose b-" I cover his mouth before he can dare call me that word.

"I swear to God if you call me a bitch I will yank that cheap gold chain off your neck."

He takes my hand off of his mouth and sits up. "I wasn't even going to call you a bitch!"

"Bullshit!"

"I wasn't. For your information, my mama taught me better than that. Even the woman I despise doesn't deserve to be called a dog."

"Your mother sounds like an amazing woman. It's a shame she gave birth to such a disgusting man." I replied.

"Why do your hands smell like that?" He asks, taking my hand and smelling them again.

I snatch it back and frown, "Like what?"

"Like cherries."

I shrug. "I was baking cherry pies before I left. Why?"

"Let me lick 'em."

"What? No! I'm not letting you like my hands."

"Come on, I'm starving. Just one lick. They smell fucking amazing."

I move my hands farther away. "No, weirdo!"

He snatches my hand, and I feel his tongue glide against my palm hastily. I instantly snatch it back and gag. I hit his head and back away.

"Disgusting! What is wrong with you?"

"Did you add a little cinnamon, too? I can t-"

That's it. I'm about to kill this ignoramus.

I unbuckle my seat belt and open the safety department. Taking out the pocket knife I had stuffed in there, I get up as August opens the door on his side and tries to run away.

"What the hell is going on?" Damien shouts, walking towards us, Marie on his side.

I ignore them and try to find August, who ran to the other side of the car. I finally spot him and he runs behind Marie.

"Save me from this demon woman!" He says, hugging onto Marie's coat. He sniffs it and smiles, "Damn, this is soft as hell."

Marie smiles back, "Why thank you! I got it f-"

Damien moves Marie away and scowls at August, "Why is Robin threatening you with a knife!"

"He licked my fucking hand!"

"You licked her hand?" Damien and Marie reply in sync.

"It smelled good alright! And I'm hungry, so can you just give me my room card already?"

I lower the knife and wait for them to give us our cards. Marie bites her nails, "About that."

"This is more of a couple's hotel and, well, we're saving most of our money for the honeymoon, so we got the cheapest rooms. That being said, the options were limited." Damien finishes for her.

"What are you saying?"

"There were only two rooms in our price range."

Realizing what he is implying, the frustration I had already been feeling since I woke up this morning turns to anger, "Are you telling me I have to share a room with this doofus for the next four days!' I yell, pointing the knife in August direction.

He laughs, "Hell no. Hell fucking no. I am not sharing a room with her. I had plans. Do you know how many women I planned on hooking up with this week? Los Angeles is the hook up spot."

"Look, I'm sorry, you guys, but there's nothing else we can do. The rooms are already paid for. Now you can either sit here and act like two little babies about it or you can just deal with it."

I cross my arms, "Goo goo Gaga bitch."

August begins sucking his thumb and fake crying like a baby. We do this until Marie and Damien have finally had enough.

"Oh come on you guys, grow up! Could both please push your hatred for each other for a few days! You won't even stay in the room most of the time. This is supposed to be fun. Please guys, please." Marie begs, making puppy dog eyes at me.

You're such a wimp, Robin.

I sigh, "Fine."

She smiles and turns to August, "August?"

He matches my actions and walks to the trunk, "Guess I'll just go to their rooms."

Marie squeals happily and we all grab our suitcases and bags before walking into the hotel. We drop our bags off before going out to eat. We only stay for a while as it is already late and we have to get up early for the day Marie had planned.

I place my stuff in one drawer and August puts his in the other. After taking a shower and changing into my pajamas, I get out of the bathroom. August and I stare at the bed with the same confused expression.

"What are we supposed to do?" He asks.

I shrug. They hadn't warned us about there only being one bed. "I don't know, but I'm not sleeping on the floor."

He scoffs, "And you think I am?"

"Well, we're not sharing the bed."

He laughs, "I'm not sleeping on that floor, Davis."

I match his laugh, "I'm certainly not sleeping on it either."

We both stop laughing and stare at each other intensely. Waiting for one another to break eye contact, show weakness, but neither of us breaks. I throw my arms down in defeat.

"I will set this bed on fire if you don't stay on your side. You got that Foreman?"

He smiles in accomplishment, "Whatever you say." He replies and lies on the right side of the bed.

Before he has a chance to get underneath the blanket, I push him off. He lands on the ground with a thud and I laugh as I hop on the left side of the bed.

Groaning as he stands up, he stares at me with his eyes narrowed, "Why the fuck did you do that?"

I shrug, "You just look kick-able." I reply and he nods as I lay down.

"Bet."

Seconds later, his hands are on my back and he pushes me off the bed. I fall to the ground with a loud thump and wince when my head hits the dresser slightly.

I get up and pounce on August, who has gotten back on the bed. We wrestle and move around violently until I am on top of him.

He grins, "You look good on top."

I laugh and it vibrates through his body. His facial expression changes and he groans. I smirk, deciding to toy with him for a little.

I move my hips, "You like that, August?"

His eyes shut, "Fuck." he mutters.

I laugh and roll off of him, "Pathetic." I say, shutting the light off.
