13: Contrasting the Perfect Complexion
I turned over in the bed, tangling myself in the sheets and groaning into my pillow. The alarm was blaring at an unnaturally high volume echoing in my mind and scattering my thoughts before they could even be collected. The alarm continued for a few more minutes before I jumped up off the mattress and slammed my hand down on Broody's phone, gripping it deathly tight and sliding my finger over the screen to stop the alarm. Looking down at the screen I saw the picture of Broody and I at the beach, his arms wrapped around my waist and his head buried in my neck as I smiled at the camera.
I don't understand why he hasn't changed the photo? Clearly I wasn't what he wanted anymore or else he wouldn't have cheated on me, so why have that photo as his screen saver, he certainly wasn't mine. But what got me even more was why that particular photo, the one where he looks like he couldn't get enough of me, the one where it was mainly me with my smile. Looking at the photo seemed to do weird things to me - pulling at the emotions I had try to burry every time I saw his smile and thought that he loved me still. It was hard to think that photo was only taken three months ago, a time where I thought I knew him, a time where I wanted to spend the rest of my life with him.
His phone vibrated in my hand and I saw a message come up;
Private Number: I missed your lips last night.
And now the feelings of remorse were suddenly gone. I narrowed my eyes at the phone and tightened my grip even more and unlocking it quickly. He has actually saved the number as 'Private Number' - un bloody believable - and the lack of previous messages shows he deletes it regularly. Nicely played Broody, but I guarantee you're not going to like my next move.
Putting the phone back down I lifted myself up off of the bed and walked into the bathroom hearing the hot spray of the shower and smiled devilishly to myself. I hope you're enjoying that shower babe.
I quickly turned off the fan so that the mirror would fog up and he would be unable to check his reflection before heading outside and making sure all of the mirrors were covered. Walking back into the room I quickly slipped into my blue fitted dress and grabbed my black blazer and black heels - putting them on and brushing my hair back blindly.
I heard the shower stop and the sound of the door and I knew he was out of the shower. I couldn't seem to wipe the smile off of my face as I walked in the room and had to bite my lip as the giggles threatened to come out.
"Off to work?" I asked a smile still plastered on my face.
"Yeah, I got a big meeting with the boss first thing and then a couple of reports to do before another meeting." He told me as he slipped on his slacks and white shirt.
"Well enjoy." I smiled at him and walked towards him tugging on his shirt.
"Yeah sure." He muttered quickly before leaning in and placing a quick kiss on my forehead and walking around me.
I watched Broody leave and quickly got out my phone texting Jordan to Skype me when he got into his first meeting. His reply was almost instant but I didn't bother checking it and just grabbed my bag and walked out of the apartment, heading towards my car. A quick drive later, I walked into my building with a wide smile on my face. The looks I was getting from my colleagues were ones of surprise and confusion - I knew what they were thinking, I had probably gotten laid this morning but in fact it was so much better than getting all hot and bothered only to have little satisfaction. No this was better, this was sweet beautiful revenge that granted me great satisfaction.
I quickly walked into Julie's office and yelled out to her. "Jules, come with me you're going to want to see this." I smiled at her and grabbed her hand - pulling her to her feet and dragging her behind me.
She groaned and complained "I don't feel well, what's going on?"
Walking over to my office I sat down and pulled Julie down onto the arm of the chair and firing up my laptop. "What are you doing?" She questioned, clearly confused. Turning to her I noticed her usually tan skin looking a little paler with slight bags under her eyes like she hasn't been sleeping well.
"Wilder's going to Skype me and we're going to watch Broody giving a speech green." I told her as I studied her complexion further. Her face seemed to pick up at the comment and her eyes suddenly found the floor and she fiddled with the bottom of her grey pencil skirt.
"Wilder?" She questioned, her voice sounding a little surprised.
"Yes." I dragged out the answer a little and narrowed my eyes on her as if trying to tap into my mind reading abilities that have yet to awakened.
"Oh, um ok. I think I'll just wait over here." she said hesitantly and walked around the desk to sit down on her own chair.
I scrunched up my face and studied my best friend as she looked off into the distance, her face looking in deep thought. I went to open my mouth and ask if she was ok when my laptop started ringing. Clicking answer I saw Jordan's stern face appear on my screen, his suit of the day was a dark grey with a blue stripped tie. His green eyes looked a little run down and his brow frowned - he looked tired.
"What do you want Ms Sears?" He started being all formal like, probably because of the other people beginning to fill the room.
"I need you to turn your camera around so I can watch my idiot and soon to be ex fiancé fulfill number seven." I quickly blurted out.
I watched Jordan's face light up a little and a smirk soon made it's way onto his lips. "Well then it will be my honor to oblige Ms Sears." He chuckled a little and flipped his camera view to face the front of the conference room, I saw a few men and women taking their seats at the sides and I knew Broody would be there soon. Looking back up at Julie I clicked my fingers to get her attention and she quickly spun around and looked over at me. I gestured for her to come over and she gave me a small smile that didn't reach her eyes before getting up and walking over.
She pushed me over a little and took a seat next to me, her small butt making it easy for the both of us to sit mainly on the chair. We watched the screen and I tuned out the voices of the muttering that was going on between the people.
We waited and waited...
"If he isn't here in one minute I'm firing him on the spot." I heard Jordan mumble to one of the others in the room, but I couldn't see who.
"That's what you said last time he was late." The man's voice sounded soft and older, and just by listening to it I started to try and place a face to the voice. My version seemed somewhat attractive for an older guy, his hair would still have some colour in it, his face would be neatly shaven and I would imagine him with soft brown eyes.
"Yes but he has a habit of walking in at the right moment."
"Well I did say you should have let him go two weeks ago. Why keep him around?"
"Let's just say I'm waiting for the right moment." I could almost hear the smirk on his face.
There was silence again before a wave of gasps and a few giggles coming into the room from outside. Leaning forward I glanced at Broody through the lenses of the camera while Julie curled in on herself, her laughter filling the room, one of her hands clutching her stomach and the other slapping her legs as she gave into her hysterics.
This was better than I had hoped for. I had seen Broody this morning before he got dressed but it was ten times better in action. There he stood in front of his superiors and work mates, his skin covered in a green dye, although his face was turning from green to red and back again but what made this better than I had imagined was his hair. This morning it hadn't appeared to work out too well but after drying the purple was bright - and I mean neon bright. His blond hair had done a perfect job of absorbing the colour and it seemed to contrast well with the green skin.
I smiled as I looked at the screen. I could hear Jordan's deep throaty chuckles as he tried to act like a professional. "You're late Mr O'Neil." Jordan's boss voice boomed.
"Y-y-yes s-sir." He stuttered and I couldn't help but join Julie in her fit of laughter.
"Next time, it will be your job." He told him and I could see his hand swipe across the camera as if in a gesture for him to continue.
Broody continued as ordered with the presentation, his face said it all though. He was embarrassed. Other workers had crowed at the window and were watching in, I noticed a few people went to close the blinds or tell Broody that he should stop but Jordan quickly shut them down.
By the final parts of his presentation Broody looked utterly defeated and I had those remorseful feelings tugging at my heart once again. I felt bad. Surly I was better than this. I had found out that he was cheating on me and had planned to make his life a living hell, to break him like he broke my heart - and when I put it like that it seems ok, but when I look at him as he falls off of the pedestal in which he sat I feel guilt. Maybe I should shorten the list. Maybe I should just end it.
"Hey are you okay?" Jules asks me, slightly pointing me in the arm.
"I feel kind of bad now." I admitted.
"Oh no you don't." She started getting off of the chair and turning it to face her. She leaned down in front of me and rested her hands in my mine and placing them on my lap. "This bastard cheated on you. You gave him your heart and he didn't just break it, he stomped on it and waved in your face like a victory banner. Now it's your turn. You are strong and you are not going to let him win. Now look up and every time you look at him remember that he deserves every bit of this."
I smiled at her little pep talk and hugged her close. "Thanks Jules."
"What else are friends for? Now if it were me, I would lock him in the old stocks in the town square and let people throw rotten food at him." She beamed at me, a deadly look in her eyes that only made me smile.
I chuckled a little at her comment. "You've been watching too many medieval shows."
She shrugged and got to her feet. She gave me another quick hug before telling me she actually had to do some work now. I smiled and thanked her again, letting her go and turning my attentions back on the screen in front of me. It was an empty conference room and Jordan had turned the camera back to face him.
"Who was that?" He questioned nodding his head a little, a weird expression on his face.
"Oh, that was Julie, my best friend." I beamed at him, my head quickly turning to face the door Julie had just walked out.
"You have friends you work with?" His tone was one of stunned and surprise. Doesn't everyone?
"Oh that's right I forgot you don't have any friends." I smiled, suddenly feeling like the joker at how wide it was.
"I do so." He snapped scrunching up his face.
"Like who?"
He paused for a minute. Gosh buddy don't strain yourself "Peter." He finally said but his voice wasn't very convincing.
"You made that up."
"Don't you have work to do?" He quickly changed the subject.
"Yeah I suppose so."
"The demolition for that building is scheduled for tomorrow but I have to meet with the builder to give him the plans today, want to come?"
"Oh uh" I started thinking about the building and the thought of it coming crumbling down. "No thanks."
"Oh come on, we can make a night of it, celebrating our partnership." He smiled.
"Fine, but you're going to have to pick me up."
"I'll swing by after work." He gave me an award winning look at made my heart flutter and my hand start tugging at my collar. It is getting a little hot in here or is just me?
Swallowing I smiled sweetly at him and shock my head to clear it of any naughty thoughts. "Good-bye Jordan."
"I'll see you soon Mia." He said mimicking my tone and I quickly shut my laptop as if I were quickly trying to swat a spider.
I leaned back in my chair and thought about how tonight would go. It wasn't weird right? Just two friends having dinner or drinks or whatever it is he has planned as a celebration, but were we even friends? I think we were now, that is after all how I would introduce him if anyone asks, but what was I to him? A little bit of entertainment maybe as he gets a front row seat to my love life crushing down in ruins. Or maybe it was more charity than anything else; he felt sorry for me and thought he would help me.
I shook my head trying to clear myself of the thoughts and turned to look at my flies. Friends or not, all I knew was that I was a little nervous about going out with him tonight, it wasn't a date or anything but it still put the butterflies in my stomach.

So I hope you all enjoyed this chapter, what do you think Jordan thinks of her? Would your money be on friend, charity case or maybe something else... something more? *wink*
