Chapter 1

June Johnson. That's the name. Head cheerleader of the high school varsity team. The most popular girl in school. Homecoming queen two years in a row going on three. Guys want her, girls want to be her.

Heh, that's not me.

Demi Louis. June's shadow. A nobody who hides in her shadow. And who is happy there. Have been best friends all of their life. Their parents grew up with each other. People know her as the girl beside June. Guys don't notice her, girls want to take her place. The place as the popular girl's best friend.

Now that's me.

But lastly, there is James Johnson. Now that's an important one. The quarterback of the football team. The most popular guy in school. Homecoming and prom king for three years, counting on four. Guys want to be him, girls want him.

He's June's brother. Older by one year.

So, that's the main people in this story. I've known the most popular people in school all my life. They're the hottest ones there, and sure I may be pretty but I'm nothing compared to them.

June and I are both in our junior year, and our parents have always made it so we were in the same classes. James is in his senior year, so that's great.

To James, I'm his little sister's best friend, and a born friend because of our parents. To June, I'm the little girl she met at a gathering when we were in diapers. We don't remember very much, but what we have been told is that when we first met, and our parents put us down for a nap together, we ended up hugging each other in our sleep. So we have always been as close as sisters.

So yeah, they are the face of the school, I'm in the background, helping them do all of this. I help them study to keep their high grades and so James can keep being the quarterback, and even if he doesn't show it when we are studying, I know he's grateful.

I make sure June always looks perfect. We facetime all-day and as she gets ready she asks me how she looks. And I am brutally honest. I'll tell her if her outfit doesn't match, or if her hair looks awful, or if it looks like she was doing the hundred layer makeup challenge.

And for the people who actually do notice me with the two of them, more often than not, they look me over, scoff, and roll their eyes. I'm used to it. My fair skin, bright fiery red hair, and grey eyes don't match to the beauty of them with their perfectly tan skin, dark brown hair, and their dark brown eyes that seem to have specks of gold in them.

Anyways, I have talked way too much about us. We need to get to the whole reason why I am writing this. To tell our story.

Beep. Beep. Beep.

It's the first day of junior year and once again, I am woken up to the sound of a facetime call and my alarm clock at the same time. I sat up, turned off my alarm clock, and picked up my phone. I yawned as I accepted the call.

"Are you kidding me?! You were still asleep?! It's the first day back!" June exclaimed from the other side of the phone.

I rolled my eyes and got out of bed, "Well sorry that I'm not excited to go back to school."

She laughed a little, "Alright, well you need to get ready! The first day is for first impressions!"

"We've known these people all of our lives," I groan as I head into my closet.

I'm an only child. And our house is big and has plenty of spare bedrooms, I chose the biggest of the rooms with the walk-in closet and bathroom.

"No, me, James, and you have known each other all our lives. We have five years on these guys!" she exclaimed.

I set my phone on its stand and I grabbed the pale green shirt with a tie by the stomach and a small pocket, and some ripped up jeans.

"That's what you're wearing?!" June exclaimed as I showed her the outfit.

"Yeah. Why?"

"Because that's boring! That's something you wear on a Thursday!"

I groaned, "Fine. What should I wear?"

Her screen paused and soon enough I had messages sent to me. She has pictures of every clothing item, shoe, and accessories I own. I opened the messages and I grabbed the items from around my closet.

I changed into a black dress that goes to about my knees, a pale pink cover-up thing, and some black ankle boots with about a two-inch heel.

I put on the rose gold heart necklace she got me for my sixteenth birthday and then put in some rose gold earrings I forgot I even had.

I put the camera back on my and she squealed as she saw me.

"See! That's better! Maybe this year you can leave the shadows."

"I'm fine in the shadows though. Anyways you look great in your outfit." I said as I left my closet and went to my vanity.

We talked as we did our hair and makeup. I did simple makeup but for my hair, I did two braids on the top of my head that met in the center of the back of my head. Since my hair has some pretty nice natural waves, I just cleaned it up a little bit and I was done.

I headed downstairs and ate breakfast before saying bye to my parents and grabbed my bag and keys. I headed out to my car with June still on facetime and put I set it beside me. I turned on the radio and drove to my best friend's house. As well as her annoying brother.

When I pulled in I saw the two of them standing in the driveway arguing. I laughed at them as I honked and got their attention.

"Are you guys done?!" I exclaimed with a laugh.

"Oh shut up," James said with a smirk.

I laughed and unlocked the doors so they could get in.

"You know if you didn't crash your cars you wouldn't have to ride with me."

"Shut up!" they both exclaimed.

I laughed even more and I drove away.
