These are some japanese words that you might come across in the book. So instead of Google-ing them, you can just refer to this chapter Aye!
First of all, if you're a newbie then you've probably heard the word 'anime' from many people without fully getting the concept. So, what is this anime that people keep talking about?
Anime is a japanese style of motion picture animation, yet it is more commonly used by westeners to refer to animation produced exclusively in Japan. Otherwise it refers to all animation according to the japanese language.
Long story short, it's similar to cartoons (not the same) but it's japanese. BAM THAT'S IT. If it's not japanese then it's not anime. :3
And now we'll be moving on to a few japanese words:
Ecchi
Another word often confused with ecchi is hentai. This genre is usually mixed with other genres like action or harem. They usually contain lots of fanservice and can refer to anything ranging from mildly erotic to unwarranted sexual behaviour.
Harem
Where the main protagonist is a guy surrounded by three or more girls attracted to him.
Reverse harem
Where the main protagonist is a girl surrounded by three or more guys like Diabolik Lovers.
Mecha
Where lead characters get to pilot a robot or something mechanical like Code Geass.
Slice of life
This focuses on a more realistic, everyday happenings.
Shonen
Shonen is japanese for boy. The age group is 10 and above. Tends to have humorous plots, male protagonists, and its common for it to have lots of fanservice like Naruto.
Shojo
Shojo is japanese for girl or little female. Age group is 10 to 18. Often has a strong focus on human and romantic relationships and emotions. Tends to have a more flowery art style than shonen like Sailor Moon Crystal.
Seinen
Japanese for young man. Age group is 18 to 30, some are even meant for people in their 40s.
Josie
Means woman/ feminine in japanese. Age group is 18 to 44. It's a more realistic version of shojo.
OVA
Original Video Animation. They are intended to be distributed on DVDs or CDs, and not to be shown in movies, or TV.
OTP
One True Pair. A couple that you ship in any anime. One of my OTPs is NaLu from Fairy Tail.
Fanservice
Scenes purely put to please veiwers and could otherwise not be in the show because it has zero effect on the plot.
VA
Voice Actor/Actress.
Ahoge
A single strand of hair that sticks out of a character's head. It literally means "stupid hair" and usually (not always) indicates that the character is stupid.
AMV
Anime Music Video.
Bishòjo
Means beautiful girl.
Bishònen
Means beautiful boy.
Neko girl/guy
Characters with cat ears and a cat tail, but an otherwise human body. They often have feline habits, claw-like nails, and occasionally show fangs.
Osananajimi
Childhood friend.
Chibi
Small forms of an anime character. They are so cute!
Canon
It means the pair that you ship or want to be together and it comes true, or anything that is true in the anime.
Dandare
A character that is usully antisocial and silent, that eventually changes to display their sweet, romantic, and loving side. Like Kanade from angel beats.
TsunTsun
Almost the same as Tsundere, except the character shows depression after getting embarassed.
Kudere
A character type, mostly female who is normally cold and unassuming but later reveals a softer and kinder side.
Deredere
Means to become love-struck or lovey dovey.
Moe
Moe is generally considered to be endearing, innocent, and naïve. In other word they are cute characters.
Kawaii
Means cute.
Fujoshu
A female yaoi fan also known as a rotten girl.
Hikikomori
Means a shut in. These are people who refuse to go outside or seclude themselves inside their rooms. Some of them are otakus.
Otaku
Anime lovers call themselves otaku. But in Japan otakus are supposed to mean geeks or nerds that usually aren't accepted by people in the society.
Lolicon
Means you have a Lolita complex or you love little kids or characters that look like kids even though they are not. And no, they aren't pedophiles if you are wondering.
Imoto
Little sister.
Ototo
Little brother.
Onee-chan/ Onee-sama
Both mean older sister. But 'chan' is an affectionate suffix where a "-sama" is a respectable suffix.
Onii-chan/ Onii-sama
Both also mean older brother.
