With A Little Faith
Fin was finally beginning to get used to the fact that the crew of boat five were dead, until he saw Chirsty. Chirsty was standing on the end of the pier, her toes over the edge almost as if the closer she got to the edge the more likely it would be she would see a boat coming out the fog. Fin wobbled down the crooked and windy stairs to her.
"You alright, lass?"
Chirsty turned round so she faced him and wrapped herself in a hug to keep out the biting wind that was blowing in off the ocean.
"Do you think their still alive?"
Fin sighed thoughtfully and looked out at the clouds that brewed a storm.
"Maybe. Do you?"
Chirsty nodded strongly and looked back out.
"I do. I think they're out there and I think that they're gonna come home."
Angus came down the stairs and joined them.
"Chirs, you'd better get home to help you're mother."
Chirsty agreed reluctantly and ran back up the hill to the village. Fin turned glumly to Angus once she was gone.
"She can't take it, can she?"
Angus looked down then slowly shook his head with a sad smile.
"She's just like Alec was when Yasmin was taken..."
Fin felt a great weight fall on him. Ten years ago, Yasmin, Alec's older sister, was taken by a dragon and never seen again. Everyone presumed she had been eaten just like many other Vikings. But, it wasn't just like being eaten. The species of dragon that took her had never been seen and has never been seen since.
"Oh Angus, I'm so sorry. I'd forgotten about Yassie..."
Angus waved his hand quickly.
"Don't. Yassie's dead, she was just a wee lass, but Alec. He is becoming a man! He will overcome this skirmish like it never happened. He's a fighter, Fin. Alec will do just about anything to protect the crew. Even if he dies, the others, will return. You'll see."
Fin smiled and patted Angus on the back lovingly.
"What is it that Chirsty always says when he can't succeed?"
A smile crept over Angus' lips and he took I a deep breath of fresh morning air.
"With a little faith, we can conquer mountains..."
Fin laughed at the memories of a little girl with so much fair in herself she almost couldn't handle it.
"That's right. And mountains we will conquer."
...On Whistler Island...
Over a breakfast of berries, we tried to scrape the mud off our legs. It was caked on in layers and made walking a whole lot harder.
"I'm so hungry!"
groaned Leo sucking his last berry. We were all feeling it, but weren't prepared to say the blunt truth like Leo. I looked over to Tristen who was very quiet.
"Are you ok?"
He nodded but I could see he was shaking.
"I'm fine."
Knowing I could do nothing, I gave up and Alec was next to speak.
"See that huge tree?"
We nodded as we followed his gaze to an enormous tree in the distance.
"That's where we're going."
