Chapter 10| Construction

Sorry this took so long guys, I got caught up in a bunch of stuff QwQ

Also I'm defying Subnautica's limits of building because some of them are kinda dumb :b

—————————————————————————————————————

[Sabre's POV]

Once again, I wake up to something hitting the bottom hatch of the lifepod.

I sorely get up from the floor. Man, I'm glad I'm going to attempt to build a base today, I want that to have been my last night sleeping on the ground.

When I look out the window, I see that it's actually pretty early. The ocean surface surrounding the pod has looked to be turned a bright orange from the rising sun, with accents of golden yellow reflecting off the waves. I'd think it's pretty if I wasn't still half-asleep.

I go over to the hatch and open it up.

"Okay Orange, what'd you-" I start, but Orange jumps through the hatch excitedly.

"I GOT THE STUFF!" He exclaims, holding up some materials.

"Wh- What?" I say.

"I got the stuff you needed so you could start building today! You still needed a few more things to build that tool, remember?" Orange says, holding out the materials to me.

It takes me a second.

"Oh- Oh dang! Thanks, man!" I say happily, taking the materials and walking to the fabricator.

I quickly grab the other materials I need after setting down what Orange just gave me, and enter the fabricator's selection screen. There in the 'utilities' section is the one thing I've been waiting for this enter time to be ready to craft; the Habitat Builder tool. I click on it and the fabricator immediately goes to work on it.

In a few seconds, I'm holding my brand-new habitat builder. I excitedly turn to Orange with a smile.

"Wanna help me with construction?" I ask.

"You bet!" Orange replies, then jumps back out of the pod through the hatch.

I quickly equip my diving gear and follow after him. The cold water wakes me up entirely, and I swim over to where Orange is waiting for me.

"Where do you want it?" Orange asks.

"I think it'd be cool if it hung off of the rocky part of the hill your house is on, what do you think?" I say.

"That's a great idea!" Orange says, swimming in a circle for a second. "C'mon, dude!"

Orange leads me over to the spot of the hill we were talking about, and I ready my habitat builder for blueprint layout.

"So uh... how does that thing work anyway?" Orange asks. "Do we need to gather the materials first?"

"I already have what I need for one room, now watch this." I say, pointing the habitat builder at the hillside.

Two small beams fire out of the habitat builder, making Orange back up from surprise. In second, there's now a multipurpose room secured onto the hillside. It's just the room, I still need to add one or two more and then attach the solar panels so I have power, but it's a start.

"That... was... AWESOME!" Orange exclaims. "How'd it do that?!"

"It kind of works the same as the fabricator, but for buildings and furniture." I explain. "I need to build two more rooms; One on top of that one and one coming off the side. Then most of the structure will be done."

"These can stack? And connect?" Orange asks.

"Observe." I smile.

I quickly build two more rooms, just where I said I would place them. Orange Steve looks in awe.

"Even I can't build that fast..." He says quietly. "That thing is amazing!"

"And now I need to attach some solar panels and a hatch." I say, swimming towards the bare bones of the base. "Then we can go inside."

"Solar what?" Orange says, swimming next to me.

"Solar panels. They get sunlight and convert it into energy, and it gives that energy to the base so it can have electricity, which makes everything work." I explain. "It's pretty cool."

"Wait wait wait, hold up." Orange says. "You can just- get sunlight? And turn it into ENERGY YOU POWER STUFF WITH?"

"Yeah?" I reply.

Orange stays quiet for a few moments.

"Uh... Orange?" I say.

"What sorcery is that?! That's so freakin cool!" Orange suddenly exclaims.

"Heh, well... it's not really sorcery. It's just science."

"Not the kind of science we have! Can you build them now? I wanna see!"

"Okay, okay." I say, reaching the top of the base.

I build a few solar panels on the roof. Two on top of the second floor room, and two on the connecting room. I hear the base roar to life as the wires from the solar panels give power to the building.

I then lead Orange to the front of the first room I built, and put a hatch. Orange follows me through it once I open the door.

The inside of the base is much roomier than the lifepod, and I'm all here for it. I build a ladder to the second story against the wall as Orange runs laps through the two first floor rooms.

"There's so much more space in here!" Orange says excitedly as he runs into the connecting room again. I call after him.

"Careful, you might-"

I hear a squeak noise of water on metal followed by a thud.

"...Slip. You alright?" I ask.

"I'm good!" Orange says.

"Well get over here then, I was about to start the best part." I say, laughing.

"Ooh, what's the best part?" Orange asks as he walks back in.

"Decorating the place, duh." I say, holding up the habitat builder.

"Oh, right!" Orange says. "What first?"

"I wanna put in some windows, so let's start with that." I say, walking to the connecting room, which will soon be my storage room.

"Wait, won't water leak into the base?" Orange asks as I click the 'window' option on the habitat builder.

"Sometimes science can look like magic." I say. "Watch."

I place a large window on one side of the room. Orange runs up to it as soon as it's finished and looks out at the ocean scenery.

"Dude, this is magic!" Orange says.

"Nope, I'm no wizard." I chuckle.

"Are you gonna put more windows?" Orange asks, turning to me.

"Not here no, but upstairs. That's gonna be my bedroom." I say.

"I'm gonna watch!" Orange says. "Race you up there!"

Before I can say anything, Orange rushes by me and is already climbing up the ladder when I turn around.

"Hey, no fair! You had a head start!" I laugh, chasing after him.

"Says who?" Orange giggles from upstairs.

I smile as I climb up the ladder.

—————————————————————————————————————

We spent all day decorating my new base and moving all of my stuff in.

Orange was seriously helpful, he even helped me move my materials to the storage room and went out and got more when I ran out of certain things I needed to build. The base is still a little bare, but I'm sure it'll be filled to the brim with stuff soon enough.

The main room has two small windows next to the hatch, and plant pots take up four spots around it in a formation of a square. They don't have anything in them just yet, but it'll be nice to have plants around in here. Reminds me of Dropsy...

The storage room is filled with lockers, each organized and labeled. I've always kind of been a bit of a neat freak, heh. Lots of fish swim around outside the window and two more plant pots stand on either side of it. These ones are smaller. A fabricator is on the left wall of the room.

Finally, my bedroom. The most decorated of all. There is, of course, a bed up against the wall of the room. It's a big bed too, nothing like the tiny twin sizes from my old quarters on the Aurora, so I'm definitely gonna be sleeping well tonight. The bed is in front of a large window, which take up half of the wall. There are small end tables on either side of the bed, each with a charging port for different devices; One for my PDA, and one for my scanner. Some empty shelves stick to the window using suction cups, empty because I don't have anything to put on them yet. On the other side of the room, without a window, there's more, bigger shelves magnetized to the wall. Some small storage boxes are under two of the shelves, meant for personal belongings. My wetsuit and helmet, which I took off a while ago since I didn't need them, are now hanging from an equipment hook next to the shelves.

I smile as Orange and I look at all the work we did.

"Thanks for helping me with all of this, it means a lot." I say.

"It's no problem!" Orange says. "I had a lot of fun!"

We then notice how dark it's getting, although I'm not worried because Orange's house is literally right next door.

"Oh, wait, we can see them now!" Orange says, taking my arm and quickly dragging me over to the window. "Look!"

I oblige, and I see tons of glowing fish in the water surrounding us. Some I recognize as the same fish we see during the day, others are unfamiliar to me. It's all beautiful.

"Woah..." I gasp.

"I've only ever seen this a few times." Orange says excitedly. "It's awesome, huh?"

"Heck yeah." I say, mesmerized by the neon colors in the water.

Orange soon has to go home, as it's getting late. Once I hear the hatch close, I set my PDA and scanner on each of their charging stations and flop onto my new bed.

Holy cow, having a bed to sleep in after having to be on the floor for so long feels amazing. It feels like the softest thing ever.

I quickly fall asleep as I wrap the blankets around me, glad for today and wondering what tomorrow will bring.
