Seeing you again

It looked like an ordinary evening. Yet, there was something in the air. Longing? Waiting? I couldn't tell.

When the shadows of the night took over my garden, I saw her. She was slowly walking, almost in fear to touch the grass, herbs, and weeds that were spread all over. Her gray thin dress was floating in the crisp air that ruled over that area. A shawl was covering her thin shoulders and a few dark locks from her bun were caressing her delicate white neck. Emma.

I slowly came closer, unsure if it was a dream or reality. She didn't seem to have heard me. I gently touched her shoulder. She turned to me and looked at me with her big, brown eyes. I could read a slight curiosity and fear in her eyes. It must have been my appearance, I thought. Indeed, I have changed a lot over the past year since we haven't seen each other.

But she looked different, too. Much frailer than I could remember. Dark circles had appeared under her beautiful eyes. Thin wrinkles could be seen on her forehead when she frowned.

When she saw me, she began to shiver and took a few steps back. Two pearls of tears were growing in her eyes.

"Daniel, it's you... " she whispered. "I can't believe it's you..."

Then suddenly, she turned and, stumbling on her feet as if in a state of dizziness, she began to go down the cliff. I tried to follow, but stumbled on something and fell. When I reached the foot of the cliff, Emma was gone.

I returned to my house and searched for the thing that had caused my fall. It a stray dog. Watching me, and sniffing the air around with a muffled growl. It would've been a beautiful dog if fed. From under its brown, thread fur, the ribs were aligned like a ladder of twigs. I felt sorry for the poor animal and brought it some dry meat I found in the kitchen. It gobbled it, its body shivering. Once in a while, it was looking at me, its eyes full of gratitude and wonder.

I left the dog outside and I retreated to my attic room, troubled about Emma's coming. I was trying to understand her behavior. Why was she here in the first place? Why was she looking for me? And why did she run when she finally found me?

Maybe she felt some affection for me after all, and she admitted she couldn't live without me. Maybe she was trying to convince herself about those feelings. And then, the intensity of those feelings made her run away.

I intended to look for her the next day. There was only one inn in the village where the passers-by were staying. It wouldn't have been difficult to find her. And I didn't think she had any acquaintances in the village. I would've found out by now. That thought helped me fall into a deep sleep, the first after long months of torment and unrest. A sleep without those odd dreams to haunt me.

I haven't realized how long I've been sleeping. When I woke up, it was already dark. I went down in the parlor and lightened some candles I found above the fireplace. When the pale light filled the room, I saw her. Sitting on the sofa near the fireplace. Waiting. When she saw me, she suddenly stood up. She was hesitating whether to come to me. She was shivering. I was wondering about how intense her feelings might have been. What was she afraid of? Why was she so troubled?

"Emma, what are you doing here?" I gently asked.

"I came to see... to see whether it was really you..." she almost whispered.

"Well, you found me," I said, smiling.

She turned her back at me. She was wringing her hands and shaking her head as if in denial.

"I had to come," she said. "I've dreamt of you so many times, for so long. You were waiting for me... Calling me... And now it feels so weird to be here with you."

I chocked on my words. What did she mean?

"How is your husband?" I tried to find out the real reason for her coming.

A bitter smile appeared on her face, "My husband... My husband stopped being my husband for a long time. He only sees me as a neurotic, unstable woman."

"I'm sorry to hear that," I said. And I wasn't lying. "How about your mother? How is she feeling?"

She sighed, keeping her eyes to the ground, "My mother died... The illness was too advanced, and all the money in the world couldn't save her."

I slowly stepped closer. She turned to me and I could see her wonderful eyes, tears glittering as she raised them towards my face. She then threw herself at my chest and cried until her tears dried out. I didn't say a word. I just hold her and caressed her soft hair, trying to comfort her. It was for the first time to be so close to her. We've stayed that way for minutes or maybe hours. Time was gone, it was no longer a barrier between us.

When there were no tears left to cry, she smiled at me, then slowly headed towards the door.

"It's time to go," she said.

"Wait, let me accompany you to where you're staying."

"Please, don't," she supplicated.

"Am I going to see you again?" I asked, my heart skipping random beats. "Where are you staying?"

"I can't tell you. And please, don't follow me," she insisted. "I shall come to you. Wait for me tomorrow night. Just like today. I shall be here. I promise..."

She then left, leaving me more baffled than ever.
