Chapter 4
Echo
»»————- ♔ ————-««
His Highness got tired of walking, so he suggested that we go to his friend's house but to get there we have to walk. I left the motorcycle at this nice bakeshop open 24/7. I promised to get it tomorrow before going to College.
Since we can't use the motorcycle, we rented a bicycle which is still open. We hopped on the bike and went to his friend's house. They lived in Blink Hus.
I see some cars in the driveway, and I was expecting a huge party inside, but only one group of people was there. The one we used to go to back in LA. They were a big thing in LA if you throw a house party.
As soon as His Highness walked in, they came towards him and hugged him.
"Where have you been? You were supposed to go here at 7, not 9." a guy with a British accent came in and greeted His Majesty. His Majesty looked in my direction and slightly smiled. I looked away. The British guy he was talking to is a son of a huge business tycoon in Europe. Cadaver James Foxtrot. Their families own Foxtrot Industrial, which extended to housing, hospitals, and furniture.
"I thought you were not coming." a red-headed girl said. I recognize her from the magazines that Julie used to flip through. A singer and songwriter, Khalili Partridge. She was more beautiful than her pictures.
I learned all his friends' names from His Majesty's personal file. Jupiter Bridgette Hennessy is the daughter of a famous football player, and her mother is a famous fashion designer.
The last guy who didn't greet His Majesty and stuffed his face with peanuts is Noah Christopher Van den Berg, a marquess. His Majesty's third cousin. I guess all rich people flock together to discuss awesome it is to dive into their money.
They saw me looking at them, so I looked away. I heard some whispering before one of them asked a question.
"Griff, is she your new bodyguard?" Noah said from the living room. He looked at me from my feet to the top of my head. All of them did.
"I thought you're free from guards?" Jupiter said with her eyebrows shot up. All of them were confused about how I was with him at this time.
"She's the new scholar." He said. Khalili walked up to me and held my two hands before he hugged me.
"So lovely to meet you!" she said and gave me a cheek kiss. She was nice and warm. I guess what you see on TV is sometimes true.
All of them introduced themselves, but I already knew their names before I got here. They took His Majesty to the living room, and I stayed outside on the porch swing. I texted His and Her Highness that I am with His Majesty in his friend's house. I think they will be worried sick if he goes out alone in the middle of the night.
I heard their laughter from the outside, and I think they are playing a game or something. They played for hours, and I saw on my phone that it was already 1:30 in the morning. We better head back because he has class tomorrow. Before entering the house again, I bumped into Cadaver.
"Hey!" he said. He was holding two beers and giving one to me. I gladly accepted it and opened it using a frat technique. He was surprised when I opened it by that method.
"So you're the new scholar?" he said while sipping on his beer. I appreciate the gesture for small talk, but this isn't the time for friends.
"Yeah." keep it short. I began drinking the beer with one hand and the other one playing with the bottle cap.
"Where you from?" he asked. He looked at me with so many questions plastered on his face. I think he is the type of person who asks questions a lot, like a lot.
"L.A." He noticed that my bottle was empty and handed him. I took it and thanked him. I was beginning to get chills from the cold air.
"I didn't catch your name earlier. What was it?"
"Echo." I reached my hand to form a handshake. He accepted it but didn't let go.
"So do they call you Agent Echo or Agent Solander?" he smiled devilishly. I was taken aback by what he said. Does he know me? How? He laughed at my reaction and let my hands go.
"Chill, Agent. I remember you from my father's request, two years ago, was it? I don't forget a pretty face." He winked at me, but I just scoffed.
"I won't tell him if that is what you are thinking. I saw what kind of threats he received last month, and I'm surprised you didn't get here sooner." That lifted a huge burden off my chest. I placed my hand on my chest and sighed.
"You seriously need to chill. I can see your dagger eyes about to kill me." He joked. I laughed and finished my drink. We heard a cough beside us. It was His Highness and the rest of his friends. They were looking at us the whole time. I stood up and gave Cadaver his jacket back, which I noticed he put on me after giving me his drink.
"I think we should go." His Highness said. He began walking to our bikes on the side of the road. He was already far from the house when I got into my bike. I just waved goodbye and took off.
"Your Highness! Please be careful!" I warned him as he continues to sway from side to side because of intoxication. I tried my best to catch up with him.
"Oh my god!!" I ran to His Highness when I saw him on the side of the street throwing up. I pat his back to help.
"Jst goz!" He tried so hard to get words out of his mouth, but he just kept vomiting. I had no choice but to call someone for help. I dialed Jonathan, the chauffeur, to pick us up. I sent a ping of the address and asked if he can pick us up.
I noticed a black SUV stopping after a few minutes. I recognized the car because of its flags. Jonathan hurried and helped me carry His Highness inside the car. He stopped vomiting soon as Jonathan pulled up.
"Thank you, Jonathan." I was truly grateful for him because I would carry His Majesty until I reach the palace gates if he didn't come to get us. Our bikes were at the back and dropped off at the rental place.
"No problem Miss.," he smiled. I watched His Highness sleeping soundly at the back. I let out a big sigh.
"That was a big one, Miss. Care to share?" Jonathan asked. I guess there is no harm in sharing some problems with him. He will surely not spill it to anyone.
"Did His Highness experience trauma?" After what happened to him, I got curious. He wouldn't react that way if he were included in a trauma. People shouldn't take panic attacks lightly. I saw Jonathan's face fall. Now I'm more invested in the story.
"It wasn't His Highness experience the trauma per se." He said. My brow furrowed in confusion. I looked in the rearview mirror to see if His Majesty is still sleeping.
"What do you mean by that?" I placed my hand on my chin, guessing what happened to him.
"It wasn't His Highness who experienced his trauma. It was his older brother. Four years ago, His Highness' brother got into a motorcycle accident in the States. It was very tragic for the Royal Family. They were studying there, and His Highness got transferred after the funeral. They were so close, and he taught His Highness about motorcycles. That accident changed everything. Being the younger brother, His Highness isn't the first successor, so he didn't bother to learn about royalty. The Royal family did not release the full details of the accident to the media. Only the people inside the Royal Palace knew what happened that day. I am sorry that I cannot share the full details as instructed by His Majesty." I fell into silence. I was speechless. There was no story about the firstborn son in the file the agency gave me.
The whole ride was quiet. It still doesn't explain the panic attacks of His Highness. If he wasn't there, why does he experience the attacks? I don't want to pry anymore.
"Thank you again, Jonathan." I was holding His Highness. I didn't want the maids to see His Majesty in this state. Jonathan drove away, and we went inside the palace.
I tried finding His Highness's room on the third floor. Luckily, there was a sign. I entered his bedroom and placed him on the bed. I took off his shoes and no more. I laid his blanket over his body. He was trembling and sweating. I went to his closet and got a towel, and plunged it into cold water. I wiped his face with the cold towel. After assuring myself that he was ok, I got out of his room and headed to my cabin.
I got in the shower so I can have a good night's sleep. Just as I wrapped my towel around my body, my phone rang. I answered the call and placed my phone on my nightstand facing the ceiling.
"ECHO!!!" I heard a loud voice coming from my phone. I instantly knew it was Juls on the other end. I went through my closet to get some pajamas. I heard another voice on the phone. Charles was also present in the call. I quickly slid into my clothes and faced them.
"So?? How's Copenhagen?" Charles took the phone away from Juls, and she was chasing him. I laughed at them. I was lying to myself if I said I'd rather be there in LA than here in Denmark.
"It's cold!" I replied shortly. I reached the remote for my bedroom flatscreen. I turned it on and went to the news channel. The news was in Danish, and I can only understand a tiny portion of the news. I was holding the phone in my right hand and the remote in the other.
"Well? Tell us about the prince." Juls successfully snatched the phone from Charles. I don't know if I should share that His Majesty had a panic attack. Should I ask them to look into what happened in that accident? or is it unnecessary?
"His Highness went to a party, and I went with him. I don't think that was interesting enough to share it with you guys." I saw how shocked Juls was upon hearing me attending a party. Back in LA, whenever some guys decide to plan a party, I always find excuses to skip it. Parties bore the hell out of me. Juls will have to drag me to a party that I have no interest in.
"Are you sick?" Juls placed both her hands on her hips, insinuating that I was sick. If she were here, she would check my forehead for fever or something. I just sighed and rolled my eyes at her.
"Just one day there, I can't believe His Highness changed you. My. My. What a special person?" I saw her smiled devilishly. I think she thinks His Highness influenced me. I wanted to wipe her smile with a conk on her head. I shook my head.
"It was my job." She just laughed it off along with Charles.
"So couz? Did you send your report to the Chief yet?" I needed to give Chief daily reports on His Majesty for new information. They needed to double-check I didn't miss anything. I slapped my forehead. How could I forget? I need to do it right now. I rushed in front of my computer. I switched the call to my laptop and closed my phone.
"What were you up to? You know that you have to pass it every day." I was too preoccupied with His Highness and learned that I didn't remember the daily report. I tried to make the content very detailed. I typed fastly as I could. I did a draft in under 15 minutes and sent it to Charles for proofreading.
"I was preoccupied, okay? I'm sorry. I sent you a draft. Check it before I email it." I waited for Charles's response. I saw him reading it, and he gave me a thumbs up. I quickly sent it to the Chief's email. I closed my laptop and sighed. The Chief would be disappointed if he knew I forgot the report. I laid on my bed and my other arm over my eyes.
"You look tired. Get some rest. You have class tomorrow." He meant it as a joke. He was right; I was tired. I didn't even experience jetlag because I needed to report right away as soon as I landed.
"Goodnight, darling" Juls gave me a flying kiss before ending the call. I looked at the clock; it was already 1 am. I have to get up in 6 hours for 'College.' I turned off my lights but left only one light next to me. I need all the rest I can get. All this babysitting will be the death of me.
