Chapter Three

The night dragged on as Daisy slowly fell asleep, growing used to the noise of the television in the background as though she was at home on the busy main road.

After a few hours, a shrill alarm cut through her sleep. Covering her face with the blanket, Daisy sighed loudly in annoyance. She was absolutely knackered, it couldn't have been the whole night already, right? Even on the loudest nights back in London, she'd wake up feeling refreshed, so it couldn't be.

Though Daisy had waited what seemed to be hours under the safety and warmth of the blanket for the shrill alarm to go off, it just continued to beep, and beep, and beep, and beep. Jerking her arms and legs in annoyance, she shoved the blanket off her body and stood a little too quickly, making her feel as though she was spinning on the spot and her legs wobble slightly. Rubbing her eyes to dispel the tiredness, she steadied herself and wiped the black stain of mascara onto her jeans- or was it eyeliner? It didn't really matter, either way, it was definitely smudged now.

Breathing in a sigh she glanced around the room, noticing that there were only embers where the roaring fire was. The clock said that it was twenty past 3, which proved that it was definitely not the time for her to be awake at all; She'd better go to bed as soon as she destroyed the evil beeping that was keeping her awake.

Stomping tiredly through the house, turning all the lights on she could find, she searched for the damn noise. She'd obviously only turned the lights on because demons would instantly attack her in every dark hallway. Although she'd be the one attacking the bloody beeping demon hiding wherever it was.

Damn, she'd forgotten how big this house really was, and she straight up had no idea what the noise was.

Standing still in the 4th hallway she'd been into, she considered whether or not she could ignore the noise and just go to bed; She was quite sure that if she shut the thick door or her old bedroom on the third floor, she wouldn't hear the noise at all. And, to be quite frank, it was pissing her off and she was too tired to keep searching.

Pulling a hair tie from her wrist, she shoved her hair into a rough bun and pulled her sleeves over her hands. To bed it was, and that sound can screech all it wanted, nobody but the rats could hear it- not that the house had rats of course, but she needed a cool way to finally go to bed without feeling lazy.

Turning back, she traced back through the house that she'd stumble-stalked through, and turned off all the lights that she'd turned on. Arriving back in the dimly lit, cooling living room, she grabbed her overstuffed bag and started towards the stairs to her bedroom. Knowing it'd take a while to walk casually up the stairs, Daisy legged it as best she could; not stopping even to breathe...And when she finally did breathe she couldn't. Puffing in and out she dropped her back onto her springy hot pink bed covers and shoved the door shut with her foot. Sitting on her old high school bed, she looked around the small, Ivory alcoves that were littered with pictures and posters from back in the day.

Spilling her bag onto the floor, she pulled her baby wipes from the pile of essentials and scrubbed at her face until it was fresh and spotless. Pulling her toothbrush from the pile, she tip toed towards the only other room on the top floor: The bathroom. After brushing her teeth, she did her bathroom business, and then once again tip-toed back into her bedroom. The tiptoeing was a habit that she still hadn't broken from the times she'd stay up until 5 am binging TVD and Brooklyn 99.

Pulling her cold covers back, she got in and snuggled into her pillows. Tonight's sleep would be amazing, it always was when she was in her own bed. Closing her eyes and shuffling down deeper into her bed, she was absolutely lost to the land of sleep; and she really didn't want to be found from said land until at least ten thirty tomorrow morning or she'd be pissed off.

Not many people can say that they can sleep soundly in their dead grandmother's home alone, but weirdly enough, Daisy could. She didn't even cast a thought towards where she was staying until she'd actually opened her eyes the next morning and thought 'wow, I'm alone'.

She wasn't particularly used to being completely alone either, back home, it was almost impossible to feel alone with the rumbling of the traffic haunting you throughout the night; but here, there was nothing to bother her at all. Which, wasn't completely awful for her sleeping schedule, but it did let the knowledge that she really was alone sink in deeper.

When her parents weren't on holiday, they only ever visited when they could, And when they did call in it was always short and quick, as though they had something to rush home to. Daisy didn't hold it against her parents though, after moving away from gran nobody really seemed the same. It might've been the guilt of leaving their mother and mother in law alone in her 70's and moving more than 3 hours away.

Assuming it was 8:00 am, the usual time that she naturally wakes up, she casually stretched and reached for her bright pink alarm clock beside her bed. The analogue clock read 11:00 am. Oh gosh, Daisy thought, Had the rake said what time he'd be back with the will? She distantly remembered something about a 'tomorrow'.

Sighing in annoyance, she knew that if Mr Rawlbank was coming, he'd have already been and gone by now. Pulling her feet out from the comfy covers, she decided that she'd have a nice walk through town and visit the law firm herself and get answers to the many questions that Mr Rawlbank left her with.

Glancing outside, Daisy saw that the sun was shining brightly outside. This was not the weather that she'd packed for at all. Despairingly, she looked at the pile of clothes that were sprawled across her floor; there was absolutely nothing that she could wear in the heat, she'd literally just brought clothes to suit London weather. She should've known, though, it was always sunny here from what she remembered.

Finally, after just staring at her clothes for a few minutes, she swung open the beige, old wardrobe and inspected all of her high school clothes. She hadn't changed that much, lost a few pounds and grew some boobs in, just the usual kind of growth. She was hoping that some of her old shorts or skirts would fit her, maybe with a belt or something to hold them up.

Rummaging around her messy ass wardrobe, she yanked out two things: A baby pink pleated skirt, and an old pair of worn denim shorts. She honestly couldn't remember the last time she'd worn a skirt, so her eyes wandered more onto the comfy looking pair of soft denim shorts. Should she make more of an effort? She hadn't seen these people since she'd been covered in spots and a little overweight, why should she care about her appearance?

Pausing for a small second, Daisy rolled her eyes and laughed. Of course, she cares what these people think, their opinions literally used to be her whole life, even if they did think that she was a witch freak.

Wiggling into the pink skirt, she found that it was a little big, but fit just right in a baggy way. Next problem was the top half of her body. There was probably nothing that she'd have that would be suitable for warm weather; it'll all just be baggy.

Hoping for the best, she pulled out a grey, clearly well-worn T-shirt from the bottom of her wardrobe. It'd definitely be baggy on hem but she could either tuck it in under her bra and wear it as a crop top, or tie a knot in it. She tried both looks and decided to tie it in a knot just above her belly button. skinny enough to wear outside, and covered enough to not be called a slag. With that decided, she just yanked a pair of old sandals out of the bottom of the wardrobe and shoved them on.

After using the bathroom and brushing her teeth, and hair, she dug around through her grandma's cupboards for some sun cream. When she found some, she slathered it on all over, making sure she was protected- and looking at the bottle, she knew she was definitely protected by the factor 100 sun cream.

Seeing a cute beach bag hung on her door, she emptied yet another bag onto the floor and filled it with the original floor items; Perfume, lip balm, deodorant- all the necessities for going out on a warm day.

Nodding to herself in the dull brown full-length mirror, she was ready. She'd even shoved a nice flower clip in her hair to keep the frizz looking trendy.

Hurrying down the stairs, she avoided going into the kitchen and the living room and went straight to the front door, if she had gone in she knew she'd get distracted.

Stopping in front of the thick front door, she glanced down at the protruding letterbox, noticing a small piece of paper sticking out from the letterbox, Daisy pulled out the whole piece and saw big, bold italic letters.

'stopped by at 09:00 am, no answer, will call back whenever next possible - Mr Rawlbank'

The rake had come while she was sleeping and she hadn't woken up in time. Her chance to possibly leave had been and gone, and there wasn't much she could do about it- except go after him: which she was definitely going to do.

She'd walk to the law firm and demand the deeds to the house then, after collecting her things, she'd book the next train to Euston station.

Hopefully, anyways.

Unlocking the door, Daisy stepped through the doorway and felt the warm, fresh feeling of sun hit her face. Breathing in, she smelt the familiar scent of home. Allowing the door to slam behind her, she turned and locked it- shoving the keys into the beach bag on her shoulders, she was ready to yell at some solicitors.

~

She'd been walking through Milbury for what literally seemed to be forever before she was faced with the prehistoric building of the solicitor's. Looking at it, Daisy realized that it really had aged a hell of a lot since she'd left. Judging by the paintwork, nobody had bothered to keep it looking nice enough for it to look... official.

Furrowing her eyebrows at the dodgy place her gran had decided to write her will with, she stepped up onto the dirty step and pressed the buzzer. Studying the building closer, she decided that it really was a shame that this place looked the way it did. The rest of the town was gorgeous, looking as though it came from the live-action 'beauty and the beast' movie. This building, on the other hand, looked like one of the abandoned buildings in London where crack-heads go to get high. And she certainly didn't look like she fit into that scene, with a bright pink skirt on, she looked as though she came from a teen movie.

Checking the overhead sign, she was cautious of if she was actually in the right place; surely, it should definitely look nicer than this. Pushing the buzzer for the second time and waiting, she knew that she wasn't getting an answer. I guess 'Jacob and CO' were at home now.

Rolling her eyes, Daisy turned from the building and stepped down from the concrete step. Maybe they had moved buildings? She hadn't been here for a long time and that was the only reason that she could think of as to why the Rake wasn't here answering the door to her.

She needed to find one of the locals, one that didn't recognize her, and ask what was going on.

Thinking of the old coffee shop in the middle of the town, she knew where she could find plenty of people and she could even grab herself one of her favourite hot drinks: Hot chocolate with melted ice cream drizzled on top. Nowhere else seemed to sell it, sadly.

Adjusting the strap of her shoulder bag, she once again set off for one of the buildings she came to know before she left, except this one would be open... she hoped.
