5| A SECOND FIRST DAY
After the events of Saturday, Sunday had been pretty uneventful, excluding the fact that they had been allowed to meet some of the First Form Merpeople from the UnderWater School of Magic. Apparently, the Merpeople were to join them in Crétuology while the students of the Academy joined them for their Ordinary Biology classes. Unfortunately, during their interaction, Bella had fallen into the pond and spent ten whole minutes with her clothes stuck to her skin, shivering from the cold.
Headmaster Grimm also gave the new First Years a tour of the school, showing them where everything was. Their classrooms were all over the school and Bella wasn't sure she could keep track of where everything was. So far, the only places she knew the directions for was the Headmaster's office which was at the school's centre on the second floor, the Medical Wing which was on the first floor in the western tower and the Dining Hall which was bellow Grimm's office.
Luckily, she was friends with Blake who had mapped the entire place out in her brain already. And if that didn't work, they could count on Piper not being afraid to ask for directions.
Piper had also received the answer to her wardrobe question. When they went to bed their first night, they were informed that their wardrobes were enchanted to magically dress them appropriately for what the situation required. They were informed that the wardrobe could only dress them in the clothes they had, simply styling them in outfits they owned from their homes in whatever realm that may be. Bella wondered how it worked, especially since she didn't have a wardrobe on Ordinary anymore. She didn't have anything of herself on Ordinary anymore.
"I don't think it matters if you exist on Ordinary anymore," Blake suggested. "It seems as though once you had owned it, it counts. Whether it exists anymore or not."
It was fun stepping into the closet and having a swarm of sparkles swirl around you and change your clothes. It reminded Bella of what Nova had done when she had first arrived. Some of the more boyish students weren't to keen on this though, likening it to the Fairy Godmother and Cinderella. They wanted absolutely nothing to do with that. But even they could admit, it certainly was a much faster to get ready. Unfortunately, enchanted wardrobes only existed in schools so that luggage wasn't necessary and places like hotels.
Bella was pretty excited about all of this, especially the fact that she was sharing a room with three other girls. The fact that there would be four mirrors instead of one reminded her that things certainly had changed for the better. She wasn't alone anymore. There would be no more nights of staring up at the ceiling, begging for sleep to hit so that she could drown out the joyous laughter coming from the two rooms on both sides of hers. Now she had people in her room to rebelliously stay up with past lights out. It felt great.
Bella shared her room with Blake, Piper and a girl named Jasper. She was in Humilitatem, and from what Bella had learnt from Grimm on Saturday night, she certainly acted like one. Jasper was a short, chubby girl with long brown hair. Her round face was densely freckled and when she smiled you could see the gap between her two front teeth. She looked much like a rabbit and ate like a rabbit too. She also had two small deer antlers growing from her head which Piper asked about.
"I'm a Jackalope. I recently learnt how turn into one on command too, but we're not allowed to on school grounds," She had explained when they were eating dinner Sunday night. "Our primal instincts might kick in. If it does for me, I wouldn't be dangerous, but a Dragon could burn the whole place down."
"Are all Créturae able to have human forms?" Piper had asked.
"Of course, we can. We're Créturae, not animals."
"And what would you consider an animal?" Blake cut in.
"A Unicorn of course!" Jasper threw her head back and laughed. "You Miracles certainly are strange."
After dinner, they were all sent to their Common Rooms at 8:00 and then had to find themselves in bed by 8:45 because it was lights out at 9:00 since school was the next day.
Bella had woken up Monday morning to the shrieking of what seemed to be a raven. Everyone in their dorm, except Jasper, jolted awake at that, terrified as they hadn't heard that on Sunday. They then heard a bell ringing and a voice chanting, "Time to get up First Formers! Your second week -first week some of you- starts now! Hurry up! Don't want to be late and miss breakfast!"
"Ugghh," Jasper groaned. "Sounds like Annalise. She's a First Form prefect from Upper Six. The worst I'd say. Always snappy with that big mouth of hers."
Bella laughed at her description.
"What time even is it? It's still dark out," Piper complained.
"Wake up time is 5:45 on weekdays so that everyone can be dressed and get a chance to eat breakfast," Jasper explained, getting off her bed and stretching. "Come on. Let's hit the showers."
They returned to their dorm at 6:30. ("Jesus. Why the heck was that line so long," Piper had said. "There's about 100 of us Piper," Blake had replied.) They all wore white robes that had the school's monogram on it on their way back, hands holding their pyjamas. One by one, they entered their magical wardrobe and were dressed accordingly. Bella stared at herself in her mirror, feeling very smart in one of the school uniforms they had acquired from Uniforms for the Young Extraordinaire. She was busy admiring herself that she hadn't noticed her reflection glaring back at her.
When she finally did, she jumped back from shock, heart pounding from the surprise. Her Lyte Self stared at her with what seemed to be an intense disdain for her person. She looked exactly like Bella, like a reflection should, but her eyes glowed gold and looked extremely soulless.
"Wow! You, uh...you scared me there." Bella had no idea how to interact with...well, herself. Especially since she seemed to dislike her for whatever reason. Was it because...Bella hated herself? No, that couldn't be it. She was mad at herself, sure, but she didn't hate herself.
Her Lyte Self scoffed at this.
"Wow, I've never seen a Lyte Self so hateful towards their Owner before," Jasper said. "Usually, they only scowl at...but that shouldn't be the case."
"It might be mad at her because you didn't say their name," Piper chimed in.
The girls turned to her, the two in Miracles in confused while Jasper's facial expression didn't change, already aware of this.
"They have names?!" Blake asked, stunned.
"Of course, they do! I asked my Guide that as soon she told me about it. It's the backwards spelling of your name, so sometimes it's hard to pronounce," Piper informed them. "That's how you summon them for help, like a Fairy Godmother." She jumped off her bed and went to her own mirror. "Watch," she instructed them.
Piper stared deeply into the mirror, her reflection still copying her every movement. "Repip! Are you there?" Suddenly, her reflection stopped moving and the background disappeared. Then its face broke into a grin when it saw Piper, eyes glowing white.
"Piper, how are you?! Haven't seen you since I dragged you into the mirror!" Repip said. "Sorry about that by the way. If I had waited to introduce myself, you might've started screaming. now that wouldn't have been good." Repip sounded more mature than Piper. Less excitable than the always upbeat Piper. Repip glanced over Piper's shoulder and smiled when she saw the other three girls. "Hello there. I'm Repip. You must be Piper's friends."
The girls nodded and introduced themselves. When Bella did, she could see Repip's smile falter. There was a shift in the happy look in her eyes, vanishing before Bella could name what emotion it was.
"I should...go now Piper. Don't want to make you guys late for class." And without saying goodbye, it disappeared, Piper's reflection returning to normal.
"Well then," Piper said, confused. She decided to ignore her abrupt leaving and turned to face Bellatheibus. "Now you try. Maybe knowing her name would make her less angry at you. Try your nickname though. My Guide said long names are too complicated."
Nodding, Bella turned to her reflection which was now its usual self, following her without fail. "Alleb?" She asked into the mirror. Just like Piper's mirror had done, Alleb appeared, arms folded, lacking Repip's joy to be there.
"What?" it snapped.
"I was just...I thought maybe if I knew your name you wouldn't be so mad at me..." Bella told her, completely at a loss for what she had done to Alleb.
Alleb's eyes softened at that, feeling a shadow of guilt as Bella stood before her, looking defeated. She then shook her head and her hard glare returned. "Don't you have to eat breakfast? I hear that the good food finishes fast."
Before Bella could respond, Alleb left, leaving Bella to stand before herself, eyes full of sadness, her good mood gone.
"Oh. I'm sorry Bella. I just thought that-" Piper tried to apologize, but Bella shook her head, not wanting to hear it.
Putting on a fake smile, she said, "Let's go eat breakfast. I'm starving."
Her roommates shared nervous glances with each other before joining Bella at the door and made their way to the Dining Hall which was completely after Saturday Nights events. Their breakfast consisted of bottomless pancakes, drenched in syrup. Students from all Forms ate as much as their stomach could hold. They got glasses of vanilla-looking milkshakes that became any milkshake flavour the drinker really wanted. Bella's full stomach and the milk moustache on Blake's ever serious face was enough to get Bella into a better mood. But she didn't forget the two Lyte Selves that seemed to want nothing to do her.
Eventually, most of the students made their way to their Starting Class where their Deans would address the entire year group about any issues, upcoming events or just important things to note in general. After that, each student would follow their individual schedules. Their Form One Dean was Professor Henri, one of the ExtraOrdinary History Teachers. He was the same man who sat at their table for diners with his kind amber eyes and wrinkled dark skin.
They all took their seats in the auditorium sized classroom and chatted away. The grey classroom walls had posters depicting epic battles. Bella could see the swords moving and spells glowing as they struck their enemies. Bella also noticed images of what seemed to be Gard Marie with other persons building the school and she saw a picture of an ecstatic Miracle Stevens graduating.
Then, the 8:00 bell rang and Professor Henri came strolling in. For an older man, he was not small nor frail. He was sturdy and fit. His nature was upbeat and friendly, unlike some of the other old crones who were snappy and judgmental. Bella tried not to think of Grimm as his comparison.
"Good Morning First Years! I am Professor Henri, a teacher of ExtraOrdinary History," he announced loudly to them, doing the typical teacher writing their last name on the board bit. "To the ones who here since last week, you already know this, but as you have realised, we have some newcomers with us this week. Let's give the last batch of Miracles a round of applause as a welcome." The classroom was fill of cheers, the first actual welcome to school greeting they had officially received, other than being sorted. He waited until they subsided. "You lot must be worrying that you have missed so much already, but don't worry. We never start official schoolwork in the first, at least not work on the syllabus, so you're completely fine. You have nothing to catch up on."
If Bella was being honest, she had completely forgotten about the fact that they were a week late when it came to schoolwork. She shuddered at the hypothetical thought of having to catch up on magical studies, something she had never done before and most certainly would not be able to understand by herself.
"Now," Henri continued. "What I have to announce today is the same as I had to announce last week. Each Form has five prefects from each House to help manage it. These prefects would have to take part in meetings. You also have five Upper Six students to keep an eye on you as well. If anyone would like to be a prefect, you have to give reasons as to why you should be chosen. Make it good since you don't know each other. We'll have presentations next Monday in this time so come prepared.
"Secondly, every year in second term we have something known as Sport's Day which some of you will be aware of. This is where majority of your House Points comes from. Each of you are expected to take part in its activities one way or another. Other House Points comes from routine uniform checks and exam results, so I hope your desire to have the House Cup cultivates respect for your uniforms and pushes you to study.
"Lastly, your final exam which is something all of you will have heard about for the first time, so pay attention." Henri's tone exchanged from casual to serious. "This exam will be an intense but easy exam. This exam will test the knowledge you have learnt over the course of the year. However, it is not a written exam. It is practical and will force you to put your theory to action in a high stress situation. It is in fact slightly dangerous if you don't prepare for it, so I advise you to study extremely hard. This test makes up 50% of your grade, meaning that even if you were failing all year, this could save you. If you fail, you will be sent to another school."
Everyone gasped at that information, turning to their friends to discuss this new information.
"They'll expel us if we fail? That's- we're first years! That's not fair!" someone shouted at Professor Henri. Bella looked towards the voice. It was Isla. "And you said it's a practical. Miracles like us have little to no experience with magic."
"That is a good point," Henri agreed, not at all put off by her outburst. He sounded rather cheery again. " But neither do ExtraOrdinaires. They may have grown up with magic all around them, but it's only when they're around eleven to thirteen do they start seeing their fully fledged Lyte Self, an indication of magic mature enough to start learning spells, do they really learn any magic at all."
"But why do we have to be expelled? That's a bit harsh," Piper said, strongly against the idea.
"Every year we have students so vocal against this. To simply put it, if you don't pass, this means that you are not capable of the most basic magic which means that well, you can't continue be here."
"So, you just dump them at a second-rate school like trash?" an Irish, green-haired girl spat, tone laced with venom. A green badge with a tree on it was pinned to her black overalls.
Henri shrugged, smiling sadly. "I don't make the rules, I simply enforce them. This school is meant grow students with ExtraOrdinary Potential; if you're not up to standard with the easiest spells...well, I guess you can't stay anymore."
The green-haired girl opened her mouth to argue but was cut off by Marvello.
"Oh stop bothering with it Lylma. If they're not cut out for it, they're not cut out for it." His tone was condescending. And then his eyes found Bella's. "And if they discover that they're not meant to be here despite all that magic, then they just have to be it." He reminded Bella of a snake, his gold eyes staring at her as if she were prey. He turned back to Lylma. "Of course it would be awful for them, but at least they still get to learn magic elsewhere. Its not like the other schools aren't good."
His logic seemed to make sense to Lylma who accepted this without a second thought although she still sulked in her seat.
Henri nodded to Marvello as if to say thank you and then continued to prepare them for what classes were going to be like and answering anyone's questions. Some of them though were rather inappropriate and left the dark man embarrassed. Others were about when they were to have Ordinary classes (it was a full day Tuesdays, Thursdays and a half day on Fridays.) But Bella ignored all of it. Marvello was very keen on looking at her when he said that they just weren't meant to be here, despite all their magic. He's out for me. I don't know why but he's out to get me. First my Lyte Self hates, Piper's Lyte Self looks me for one second and automatically leaves for no reason and now this boy who I barely know seems to hate me too.
Bella didn't know what was happening, but whatever it was wasn't good.
∞
Bella's second first day at the Academy was going significantly better than her first first day at St. Xavier's. She learnt about swords in Weapon Handling with Professor Connary and even got to hold a Rapier which was cool. It was a regal looking sword, elegantly crafted. It was similar to the one Gard Marie had held in her portrait in Grimm's office.
In ExtraOrdinary History, they started off with ExtraOrdinary's very beginning. Apparently the Ordinary and ExtraOrdinary used to be one until Ordinary persons grew fearful of them and started a war. ExtraOrdinary won of course, banishing Ordinary to a realm of its own, creating a barrier where only ExtraOrdinary persons could enter and leave as they so pleased.
Crétuology was interesting. The Merpeople had joined them as they sat around the pond on school grounds. They first deciphered what the difference between an animal and a Créturae was, which was simply whether their kind could turn into a human like Dragons or were already humanoid like Merfolk and Fairies. Apparently, it was a long list in which they had to learn all of for their EEDs, a Fifth Form exam. Professor Owlwood also explained how Miracles knew they were Créturae.
"Students over the centuries have reported to get vivid dreams of themselves as a Créturae," she had explained. "They might even start developing some of their Créturae attributes. See how Jasper has antlers and Finn has feathers in his hair? Avid signs of Créturae. It might take a while until they can turn though."
"What if they're a mermaid? Wouldn't they need to go live in the sea or something?" Piper, of course, asked.
"They should spend time in the sea, but they don't have to live there. Unlike ExtraOrdinary born mermaids, Miracle mermaids can alternate between legs and tail. Merpeople can have legs, but it's a spell that doesn't last long and needs to cast by the mermaid themself. If any of you Form One merfolk casted it, it wouldn't last thirty minutes."
Bella found the class informative, but not really all interesting. Piper took extreme interest in though and so did Blake. It might be because they could turn out to be Créturae, she thought to herself. Then again, Piper seems to be curious about everything.
At 11:40, it was lunch time at the Academy. All students from every Form gathered in the Dinning Hall to eat what the cooks had prepared that day. They were served lasagna (with their being a vegetarian version of course) with soft drink that became any flavour the drinker desired. Everything was going well as the four girls spoke together, joined by Jasper's two friends Annabeth, another Jackalope, and Rowan, a normal ExtraOrdinaire and Alyssa. All seven of them were becoming fast friends with each other. Friends, Bella realised, a small smile made its way onto her face. She had friends.
Then, Winston decided to join them.
He didn't announce himself either. He simply got up from his place amongst his group of rowdy friends ("Idiots always surround themselves with other idiots," Blake had snidely remarked.) and plopped himself right in between Piper and Blake on the bench.
Bella frowned deeply.
"I don't think they want you sitting next to them, Winston," she told him calmly.
"Oh! Right! I-" He got up instantly but still stood before them, looking sheepish. "I didn't mean to just barge in- well I did! But, I don't really...think sometimes and..." he trailed off, eyes downcast, looking ashamed.
"Wow, I hadn't noticed," Blake replied sarcastically, pokerfaced.
Piper nudged her in her ribs and whispered, "Stop it! I think he's trying to get at something. Don't scare him off."
Blake snorted and folded her arm. " Well if you are getting at something, get to it. Our lunch time is limited."
"What did he do to those two?" Rowan whispered to Jasper.
"I have no clue," she responded, eyes glued on the scene in front of them.
Winston nodded and then stood straight, as though he suddenly regained some of his pride...or confidence, and continued on.
"I wanted to say I was sorry, to both of you," he confessed. "I didn't mean to insult you Piper nor start fights with you, Blake. And I'm sorry to you Bellatheibus. Sorry that you had to be in the middle of that." He scratched the back of his neck. "I'm rather impulsive and don't normally think about what I say before I say it. I wanted to apologise sooner, but I was nervous. Today I just kind of...impulsively came over here when I spotted you. I'm not asking to be friends; I would just like to make amends."
Piper smiled at him. "Of course, I forgive you! It's totally fine! I've been told that a lot actually, that I'm really inquisitive. But I'd like to think that that what's got me here in the first place."
Winston smiled at that. "You ask some good questions too, questions I'm too afraid to ask sometimes if I'm honest. It's very...brave of you." he blushed some reason at that, before shaking it off and turning to Blake whose glaze was icy.
"Well, I'd say it was kind of you to take initiative to apologise," she said, finally. Her glare softened as she looked down. "And I guess I was rather mean too, so I'm sorry as well." She looked up at him, a small smirk on her lips. "However, I can't say we can be friends. After all, I did see somewhere that Daemonium is the enemy House of Opportuna. We often find ourselves at odds with each other. And since I still think you're an idiot and-"
"I still think you're incredibly self-righteous," he cut in, a huge grin on his face.
Bella was stunned to hear Blake actually laugh at the joke.
"And you think that. I'm afraid we can only be rivals," she finished. She stuck out her hand for him to shake it.
Winston accepted it. "Oh, it is on water witch."
"Since you're not the brightest, I feel the need to tell you that it's a friendly competition, fire hazard. So, don't go planning my death or anything."
"No promises." Finally, he looked at Bella. "And you, Bellatheibus?"
Bella smiled at him. "Of course, I forgive you. You're clearly still an impulsive idiot though, seatin yourself here without warning, but if they forgive you, I forgive you. And call me Bella. The teachers say it wrong already. Don't need to hear it out of a student either."
Everyone at the table laughed at that. Then Winston asked if he and friends could join them and just like that, with three apologies, her social circle got even wider. Could this day get any better?
∞
It could not get any better, because it decided to get worse. After such a great lunch, Bella had assumed the rest of her day would go just as well, but fate had other plans.
Everything started going downhill in Simple Spellcasting.
Unlike Professor Connary who wanted them to do practicals with weapons midterm after their second test based on theory, Lady Leonora wanted them to go with a more hands on approach, much to Bella's dismay.
Remembering what Grimm had told her, she raised her hand. "Um...Excuse me, Lady Leonora?"
"Yes dear?" Her voice was soft like silk and her mannerisms resembled that of a woman from the 1940s, with her gentle movements and dainty appearance. She even spoke and dressed like she came from the golden era of Hollywood, with her curled dark brown hair and a fake beauty mark on her face along with her fitted dresses accompanied by gaudy jewellery. She was glamorous to say the least.
"Headmaster Grimm said I'm not to do practicals until we do the theory-"
"Ah, you must be Bellatheibus, right?" Leonora interrupted. Bella nodded. "Well Miss Demure, I'm well aware of what Headmaster Grimm said but how on earth do you expect to learn the theory without doing the practical right away?" She sounded condescending.
"I- Well I was just repeating what she said Miss. I did destroy some parts of the Dining Hall-"
"And it was fixed. So, I assure you dear that if something like that happens in here, all will be returned to normal." Leonora turned away, then paused an idea crept into her mind. She spun back to face Bella. "Why don't you go first."
She signalled Bella to come towards her, her delicate smile still on her lips. I feel like she wants to embarrass me, she thought, finding her demeanour odd and creepy. She'd never been fond of glamorous people; they often had hidden agendas and ugliness under their "Hollywood Lights" so to speak.
Leonora placed her hands on Bella's shoulders and carried her to the centre of the classroom. Bella looked up at everyone as they stared back at her. Blake, Piper, Winston and Alyssa, who were the only out of their little group to be in this class with her, gave her encouraging smiles with Winston giving her a thumbs-up. She smiled back, smoothening her overalls dress nervously. Then her eyes landed on Marvello who had a look in his eyes Bella didn't like.
"Now, today I was planning on teaching you all very easy spells. Spells that even a child with an underdeveloped core could manage. The first one is called a light spell. It simply consists of you forming a ball of light in your hands. Very useful if you're out at night, there's a blackout or...you're still scared of the dark at this age." That last one had the other students laughing. "Now then, Bellatheibus. I want you to rotate your left hand in a clockwise motion twice and then quickly snap your fingers and hold open your palm." Leonora demonstrated the motion herself. "Can you do that, please."
"Seems simple enough," Bella muttered, following the woman's instructions.
She did it perefctly.
"Now, I want you to repeat these words as you do that motion," she instructed. "Accrode-iom al Miélure!" She announced the words with passion, timing them to each 360 degree turn of her hand, and when she snapped her fingers, a ball of white light appeared, hovering over hand as it casted a bright, white glow that extended to the board and the first row of desks.
The class clapped, awed. This wasn't their first time seeing magic, even the Miracles had experienced it by now, but seeing it with their own eyes never got old.
"As you have noticed, my ball of light is white as my core element is Air, also indicating that I belong to Humilitatem," she informed them. Students in Humilitatem cheered, making the others laugh. "Magic comes from our core, so it makes sense that most of our spells will be linked to our core elements. Now Bellatheibus." Her found Bella's. "Your turn."
Sighing, Bella nodded and readied herself. Her nerves were all over the place and her left hand trembled. She swallowed down her fears and took a deep breath before performing the spell.
"Accrode-iom al Miélure!" A ball of light formed in her palm, it's yellow light not reaching the same radius as Leonora's, but it was still good. The class clapped, cheering at her success. Bella felt immensely relieved. But as soon as her nerves melted away and she let pride and amazement swell within her for having done magic, the ball in her hand started to vibrate erratically.
Leonora's eyes widened at that. Her normally velvety voice was cracked as she shouted, "Close your palm now Bella-!"
But it was too late. The light burst out of her hand and violent began shooting itself all over the classroom with lightning speed. Everyone screamed and ducked as it hit tables, the walls, the floors and almost hit the light but Leonora stopped it when she shouted Bella couldn't make out and white light should out from her finger and struck the ball of light, making it explode into fireworks.
Gingerly, everyone raised their heads and looked around the classroom that now had cracks and holes in the walls.
"Uggh! It went through one of my books!" Isla screamed, her glare finding Bella, irises glowing red. "Can't you just try to control your bloody magic for once! Gosh!"
"Like you could do any better," Winston retorted, a sneer on his face.
"I bet I can actually," she boasted. "Accorde-iom al Miélure!" And then a ball of orangey-red light floated above her palm. She then closed her palm after a few moments, light vanishing. Her eyes found Bella's once more. "And I'm not even an Imagin," she taunted.
Bella hung her head in shame. "I'm sorry Miss. I don't know what happened-"
"Its quite alright dear." She didn't look at her, too busy fixing the classroom as she muttered spells under her breath. She walked up to Isla and then fixed her book. She turned to face Bella, frowning slightly. "I think that's enough practical for you today. Good effort though, It was a good light...before it, did that. Now take you seat and take notes instead."
Bella nodded and made her way back to her seat, silent. She felt her friends sending her worried glances but chose to ignore it along with the muttering of the other students as some of them glared at her. For the rest of the class she watched everyone else try magic while she sat there, doing as Leonora said, and took notes.
In Elemental Projections class with Professor Aurelias, she wasn't even allowed to participate in the lesson in which they were going to activate their element on their own. Aurelias was aware that Grimm didn't want her participating in practicals just yet and after what happened Saturday night and in Leonora's class, she was not going to risk it.
She taught them that elemental magic was the first type of magic anyone could ever do. It comes directly from their cores and was linked very closely to who they were or could be. She explained that elemental projections could be made into anything the user desired. It was an extremely powerful form of magic. And they were also not limited to one element but it took some to learn the others.
After their theory, Bella then had to sit back and watch as Blake had a ball of swirling around in the palm of her hand, and Piper made air blow out Winston's fire. She even watched Marvello zap a paper on fire with lightning, only for his friend to put it out with water. Bella also noticed Lylma make a small seedling from a pot grow as Aurelias had given the Salvator students.
Her last class, Shadow-Blocking, was probably the most embarrassing. Professor Medabango had brought Imps to class and had taught them a spell to banish them back to The Shadow Pit.
"Nirnab tuto alm!" He shouted, pointing his finger at one of the nasty creatures in their cages. He faced the class. "Now, I want all of you to try. Even you Bellatheibus, except you'll go last."
"But sir-" she started to protest but was waved off by him.
He was a handsome man who smelt like the forest. He dressed like an outdoorsman, his boots tracking dirt a little bit over the classroom. He towered over her, eyes narrowed and smile absent. He reminded Bella of a wolf.
"Now I know what Grimm said but I personally think that if they continue to baby you, you'll never get the hang of that powerful magic inside you."
He left no room for argument, so Bella just fell at the back of the line.
Everyone was able to banish an imp, although it took some people a few tries like Jasper and Annabeth. Isla was perpetually opposed to be near those "Ugly looking beasts" but Medabango threatened her with detention after which she seemed to have no problem facing them.
Finally, it was Bella's turn. Everyone was wary of her, some even hid behind their desks. They were expecting her fail. It would've hurt her deeply if she herself had no hope that she would succeed. Nervously, she took her place in front of the cage, one Imp remaining. It was short and black and seemed to have ooze dripping from its eyes. It was restless, screeching and frantically shaking the bars of its confinement. When it saw Bella, it shrieked at her, stretching out its claws as if to grab her. She shrunk back.
"Don't act so nervous around it otherwise the spell won't work," Medabango ordered. "Calm yourself and the spell should work."
She held out a shaky finger. "Nirnab tuto alm!"
Nothing happened. Everyone sighed, relief washing over them. It hadn't worked, which was a much better result than what they were expecting.
"With confidence Bellatheibus," he told her sternly.
Gulping, she took a deep breath and prayed that the spell would work. Or not at all.
She held out her finger again, and with more confidence, she said, "Ninab tuto alm!"
This time, yellow lightning shot out from her finger and electrocuted the Imp. The power from the blast shot Bella backwards, hitting a desk and landing flat on her face. She groaned and looked up, a horrified expression making its way onto her face as everyone screamed for the second time that day and took cover as the Imp rammed violently against the cage, even more hyperactive, yellow sparks flying off him. He managed to escape, tearing the cage apart. It headed straight for Bella and almost got her, but Medabango shouted the same spell and the creature burst into sparks of green.
Everyone stared at her. Even Medabango stared at her in shock.
"How on earth did you that?" he asked angrily, stomping over to her.
She flinched and stood up, not meeting his eyes. "I- I don't know! I was just doing the spell and-"
"Clearly you did something or else that wouldn't have happened. I've seen that spell backfire and it never does that."
Bella stood, silent, feeling mortified as everyone either stared or glared. She heard whispers of "She could've gotten us all killed!" float about the classroom. Tears stung at her eyes and before Medabango could say anything else, she fled from the classroom, no longer able to contain the negative emotions that were rising within her.
