Chapter 3: At Least it Used to Be

"Ladies and gentlemen, may I present, the star of our show! Miss Medda Larkin!"

Everyone began clapping including Davey, Les and I backstage.  Jack had gone out to the audience and sat in a chair by everyone else.  Medda began singing and swaying her hips, swinging the pearls around her neck as she walked.  Davey and Les poked their heads out of the audience, watching in awe.  I grabbed them both and pulled them back.

"If you can see the audience, the audience can see you!" I hissed.

"Hey!" Les protested as I dragged them backstage and down the stairs to the audience.

We sat in three chairs by Jack and watched as Medda sang, the stage lights sweeping over her. I looked around at the set before turning and seeing one of the private boxes up high. From what I could tell there was a girl sitting there writing something. She wore purple and had curly hair that shone against the light. My eyes widened and I started tugging on Jack's sleeve quickly.

"Wha- What is it?" Jack muttered turning to me.

I said nothing but pointed up to the box; Jack's gaze following my hand. His eyes widened and he rose his eyebrows before grinning. He looked back at me and pressed a finger to his lips signaling to be quiet. I made a lip-zip motion and gave him a thumbs up.

Jack got up and quickly went out the doors to find the stairs that led up to the boxes up there.

I jumped slightly hearing Davey whisper something, his breath tickling my ear, "What the hell is he doing now?"

I waved him off, "Just off chasin' that girl again."

"Ugh, does he always do that?" Davey groaned.

I turned in my seat to face him better, "Listen Jacobs, Jack Kelly may be an egotistic smartass-"

"I'm with you so far."

I scowled, "But I know he is not a player."

"Never said he was."

"You implied it."

"No I-"

"Shut up!" Les hissed from where he sat on the other side of Davey.

I pressed my finger to Davey's lips and it was his turn to scowl at me.

"Lighten up Jacobs." I muttered, taking my cap off and leaning my head against his shoulder.

I felt his arm tense slightly and he cleared his throat softly, "It's Davey."

"Whatever you say."

"What do you think he's doing up there?" Davey muttered halfway through the show, flicking his eyes towards the box.

"Well, they could always be-"

Davey covered Les's ears and shot me a hard glare.

I raised my hands in defense, "Or- Or they could just be talking and he's trying to charm her."

"What are you doing?!"

We turned and looked up at the private box to see the girl had stood up.  I stifled a laugh as Medda yelled at them and Jack gave a sheepish grin.

"You are the most impossible boy-"

"I think he's trying to charm her.  Seems to be working." I laughed.

Davey rolled his eyes with a smirk, "A real knight in shining armor huh?"

"Sure is."

Davey shifted awkwardly, "So you and Jack. . ." He trailed off.

I raised an eyebrow, cocking my head to the side, "Huh?"

"Did you guys ever have any. . . History?"

I made some sort of noise between a snort and a laugh in my throat and coughed hard.

"Oh, that's a good one Jacobs." I said, wiping a tear, "Jack is literally a brother to me.  That's all.  I ain't never had a history with him and I will not ever.  In fact, he's the one that comes to me for advice on girls.  I usually help set him up on these dates.  Though- he seems to be able to fend for himself." I laughed, motioning back to the box.

Davey let out something that almost looked like a sigh of relief.

"Why'dya wanna know?" I asked, curiosity getting the better of me.

"No reason." Davey said quickly, "Just wanna- like, get to know you.  Wait- no, I mean I-"

"I wanna get to know you too Davey." I grinned.

He flashed a smile that could have blown out the brightness of a star.

"Good to know." He said softly, "Good to know."

We went back to watching the girls dance in the show before it ended and everyone stood up, erupting in applause.

I saw Jack climb down from where the box was, a smirk on his face as he fixed his newscap.  I took Davey's hand and dragged him and Les over to him.

"So how'd that go cowboy?" I grinned.

"Eh, she'll come 'round." Jack shrugged, "Sure turned out ta be a nice drawing though.  Really hope she likes it. . ." He trailed off.

I was almost surprised.  This was the most sentimental Jack had seemed with a girl.  He almost seemed like he actually felt something different for her.

Jack cleared his throat, jumping me from my thoughts.

"So. . . You two?"

"What?" Davey and I asked at the same time.

Jack grinned and made a motion to my hand that was somehow still intwined with Davey's.

We both released hands and jumped away quickly, Jack shaking his head in annoyance.

"Well you nitwits," He began, "I'm headin' back to da Lodgin' House.  Follow if ya want.  I don't care."

"Jack wait! Les piped up, running over to him, "Can I come too?"

He tugged on his sleeve and Jack bent down so he could whisper something in his ear.  Jack grinned mischievously before looking back at mine and Davey's confused faces.

"Sure thing kid.  You two can spend the night."

"I don't think mom would-"

"We'll stop by your place and talk to 'em." Jack shrugged casually.

I glared daggers at both Jack and Les, knowing exactly what they were up to.

"Bye guys!" Les said, quickly waving before dragging Jack out the door; leaving me and Davey to our awkward silence.

I looked around at the stage, the audience long gone by now as someone was sweeping the floor.

"Ya know, in Greek mythology it's believed redheads turn into vampires when they die."

I turned around, raising an eyebrow at Davey, "Why exactly are you telling me that?"

Davey shrugged sheepishly, "Just wanted to get a conversation going I guess. . . I mean, you kind of are a redhead- slightly." He pointed to my braid that stuck out from my cap and I touched it subconsciously.

"Follow me." I said, taking his hand once more and pulling him along, "I wanna show you somewhere. At least, before anyone else does."

We went up the stairs and backstage where we found Medda fixing her hair up in front of one of the mirrors.

"Miss Medda?"

She turned around and her eyes brightened seeing us.

"Oh, yes, what can I do for you two?" She grinned.

"Well for starters, you were fantastic tonight. You never disappoint." I smiled.

Medda waved a hand, "Oh stop it now." She smirked, "You say that every time."

"But it is true."

Medda stood up and walked over, giving me a quick hug.

"Now what can I do for you honey?" She asked.

"Oh, right. Do you have the extra key for the rooftop?" I asked, "I know Jack usually leaves it here on accident."

Medda grinned, walking back to the vanity and opening a drawer, pulling out a shiny key.

"That boy is quite the mess, I swear." She chuckled, coming back and dropping the key in my hand.

"But we wouldn't want him any other way." I laughed.

Medda nodded before turning both me and Davey around and giving us a small shove, "You two run along. I've gotta finish cleaning everything up."

"You sure you don't want any help?" Davey asked.

"I'm perfectly fine." Medda said with a smile.

I began walking when Medda pulled Davey back. I saw her whisper something in his ear that I couldn't hear and only saw her slightly nod to me and Davey stiffened slightly, his back straightening. He turned to Medda and nodded, slightly fixing the cap on his head.

"You ready?" I asked as he walked back up to me."

"Yeah."

"Then let's go!" I said, running for the stairs with him following me.
