Chapter 24
Being Watched
Chapter 24
“Why didn’t you ever invite me to sit with your group of friends when I first got here?” I ask Jeremy. I mean I know if the roles were reversed, I would’ve invited him to sit with my group of friends from the first day.
Jeremy and I have been together for three days now and he is currently at my house. My parents are still working now but they will be back in an hour so we will all have dinner together.
“I didn’t know you were watching me too and I didn’t want you to meet Jeremy, the jock. I wanted you to meet the real Jeremy,” he says making me smile.
“I already know that Jeremy and I love him very much,” I say to him, kissing his cheek.
“You do?” He asks teasingly.
“Yep, and I’m pretty sure he loves me too,” I say.
“Really now?” Jeremy feigns surprise.
“Yeah,” I say, nodding my head enthusiastically and he chuckles lightly.
“Well then you’re one hundred percent right,” he says. “He’ll be an idiot not to love you.”
I grin and he smiles before leaning down and kissing my lips.
“You know what we should do?” I say suddenly, sitting up straighter on the couch.
“Dance?” He replies and I give him a confused look.
“What?” I say.
“What?” He says as well.
“Do you…” I start. “Do you like to dance?”
His cheeks turn pink and he shakes his head. “N-no!”
“You do!” I exclaim, pointing at him with a smile on my face. Then I added, “Hmm you can still discover new things about a person even after watching them for three years.”
“We’re creeps,” I hear him mutter and I chuckle.
“I know,” I reply then I grin and exclaim again, “You like to dance!”
I didn’t think I would know more new things about Jeremy but I guess I was wrong.
“Stop,” he says, embarrassed.
“There’s nothing embarrassing! I like a guy who can dance,” I reply, shooting him a wink.
“You do?” He asks, raising his eyebrows slightly.
“Of course. We should go dancing some time!” I say, getting excited.
He laughs at me but I can tell he likes the idea.
We are quiet for a few seconds before he says, “Anyway, you were saying. We should…”
“Oh yeah!” I say, remembering the start of the conversation. “I think we should give George a call.”
He thinks for a moment before nodding his head. “Yeah, the time for him to explain has finally come.”
I agree with him and take out my phone. “I think this needs Skype.”
Jeremy nods and grabs my laptop, turning it on. I send George a message telling him to go on Skype because I need to talk to him.
We wait around five minutes before I see George online. A few seconds later, his familiar face appears on my screen.
I look at his surroundings and notice that he is in his room. His brown hair is perfectly combed as usual and his glasses still the same.
He smiles when he sees me and his eyes widen a bit when he sees Jeremy then he grins.
“I see things are working out,” he says, a satisfied smile on his face.
I roll my eyes. He can never start a normal conversation with ‘hi’ or even ‘how are you’.
“Yeah and now we need an explanation,” Jeremy says.
“It’s the ‘right time’ now, isn’t it?” I add.
I watch his reaction closely but nothing changes. He face remains neutral.
“Not really,” he says.
I raise my eyebrows at him. “Really George,” I say. “If now is not the right time then when is it?”
He shrugs and looks away for a brief second.
“You never planned on explaining yourself,” I finally concluded.
He bites his lip, confirming my thoughts.
I sigh. “C’mon George, just tell us already. You have no right to back out now.”
“You won’t understand,” he argues.
“Try us,” I reply. We stare into each other’s eyes challengingly.
“I can see the future,” he says and I blink at him. I turn my head slightly to the right and see that Jeremy’s reaction is the same as mine.
“Seriously, George? You expect us to believe that?” Jeremy says giving him an incredulous look.
“I told you, you wouldn’t understand,” George replies with a sigh.
“You didn’t even tell us the truth!” Jeremy argues.
“Why does it even matter now?” George asks. “You’re together, you’re happy, you’re honest with each other and everything’s fine. What will change if you knew?”
I think about this for a minute. He is right. It really won’t change anything but I guess Jeremy and I are both curious.
George’s behavior was really unusual and the whole thing has always been a mystery to us. We have been waiting for the day when the time is right for us to know but George won’t give us answers.
Will it change anything? No.
Do we still want to know? Yes.
Are we going to know? Probably not.
Jeremy glances at me and I think we both reach the same conclusion.
“You’re not going to tell us, are you?” I ask. One last try, I think.
“I already told you. This,” George gestures at me and Jeremy. “Wouldn’t have happened if it weren’t for the cameras.”
“Who says?” I ask him.
I think without those cameras and creepiness I would’ve had a better chance with Jeremy! At least we would’ve had a normal relationship without all the drama.
“If I didn’t put up those cameras, Jeremy would’ve fallen in love with Amelia and once you moved there you wouldn’t have fell for him. You would’ve fallen for Henry.”
“How do you… How do you know these people?” I ask with wide eyes.
“It’s too complicated. I just had to make sure that you and Jeremy got together. I used a weird way to do that but it worked and that’s all that matters.”
I shudder at the creepiness. Why did he have to make sure we were together? Why couldn’t he let things happen on their own? Should someone control other people’s relationships? Why should someone even interfere in other people’s relationships?
“What are you? Cupid?” Jeremy asks.
George laughs at this. “Nope, but something close.”
“You’re such a creep, George,” I say, blinking at him, still shocked because of what he said.
“I know,” he replies. “Look I gotta go I have homework to do.”
“Okay, I’ll talk to you soon,” I tell him.
“You will?” He asks, surprised.
I give him a confused look. “Yeah… Um, why wouldn’t I?”
“I-I just thought,” he stammers, looking away for a second before meeting my eyes again. “I thought you wouldn’t want to talk to me anymore after this.”
I smile at that. “We already discussed this before Christmas, didn’t we?”
“Yeah,” he says, giving me a smile. “Thanks.”
“Study well,” I tell him. “Bye!”
“Bye,” he says and we end the video call.
I shut my laptop and turn to face Jeremy.
“So, um, is he a fairy or something?” I say and Jeremy laughs.
“Maybe,” he says.
“What if he’s a cupid in training?” I say.
“Can we stop discussing what George is?” Jeremy pleads. “I just want to forget about all this creepiness and carry on with a normal life.”
“Yeah, me too,” I reply.
“Like he said, it doesn’t matter. What matters is that you’re my girlfriend now,” he says, his blue eyes boring into mine.
“Y-yeah,” I say with a squeaky voice.
He chuckles. “You’re cute.”
He then gives me a brief kiss.
“So,” I say when a thought pops into my head. I smile innocently and say, “Did you write me any poems?”
“Of course you know about that too,” he mutters. His cheeks are now red and I think he looks extremely adorable.
“So, have you?” I ask.
“No,” he replies quickly, not looking at me and I immediately notice the lie.
“You have!” I say, grinning.
His cheeks turn to an even deeper shade of red. “I—”
“You’re so adorable!” I squeal, pinching his cheeks.
“Please stop,” he pleads and I snicker.
“I’m sorry,” I say and his eyes finally meet mine.
I kiss his red cheeks and he smiles at me.
“We’re home!” My mom’s voice suddenly calls. A few seconds later, she walks into the living room where Jeremy and I are seated.
“Hello!” My mom says her face lighting up when she sees Jeremy.
“What have you done to the poor boy?” My dad says and I immediately recognize his teasing voice. “He’s blushing like a girl on her first date.”
I burst out laughing and mom slaps my dad as Jeremy keeps on blushing.
“He’s just a shy boy,” I reply, shooting him a cheeky smile.
He narrows his eyes at me as his cheeks turn back to their normal color.
“Dinner will be ready in half an hour!” My mom says, dragging my dad with her to help her in the kitchen.
“We’re still going out for lunch on Sunday after church?” Jeremy asks once we’re sitting on the couch again.
“Yeah,” I reply. We had decided last week that after church on Sunday we will go to lunch with my parents and his mom.
I now go to church every Sunday and I don’t miss the church meetings on Friday. A lot has changed over the past three months. One of those things was my faith. I started believing more in God and that was a really good thing.
“Great,” Jeremy says, stopping my thoughts.
The rest of the night passes much better than I even thought it would. My parents adore Jeremy. I think they love him almost as much as they love John even though I haven’t known him for that long. It’s not even half the time I had known John!
We didn’t get to really find out what George’s intentions were and we’re probably never going to know but now we didn’t care because what mattered was that we loved each other.
Whether what George said about me being in love with Henry and Jeremy being in love with Amelia was true or not, I am more than happy that it didn’t happen. I never want anyone other than Jeremy. He is the only one for me, the only one I love.
