Chapter One "Daddy? Sorry."
"Gah" I exclaimed as I aggressively threw my legging into my duffel bag.
I wanted to scream, cry, and punch a wall. Life was finally looking up. I was finally happy with where I am. Motherhood is hard enough, especially at nineteen years old. I do not need this kind of drama in my life. What are the odds I go nine months happy without him and he shows up the day my son is born. How did he even find me? How did he know I was in labor?
"You need to relax." Nick told me, wrapping his arms around me from behind.
"Don't tell me to relax. I just had a baby and then the sperm donor walked in after nine months of ignoring that fact that I was even pregnant in the first place like we were going to welcome him with open arms. 'Oh you're ready to be a dad? Fantastic, change his diaper for me, yeah?' Like, seriously?" I rant, rubbing my hands over my face.
"I know. I'm just as upset as you are, but abusing your clothes isn't going to make him go away."
I turned around to face him and gave him a frown. "I just wanted to go home with our son and be a normal family."
"Me too. I want that more than anything." He told me, leaving a long kiss on my forehead. "He'll probably realize how hard it'll be and leave again. I give him a week at most."
"You're probably right." I nodded. "Let's just take our son home."
He nodded with a warm smile before we continued to pack the rest of my clothes.
Twenty minutes later, Nick pulls into the driveway of my dad's house. I sat in the back next to Thomas to make sure he wouldn't be scared of the car ride. To my surprise, he fell asleep as soon as we started moving.
"Welcome home, Tommy." I whispered to him and ran my finger down his soft cheek. "I'll get him and you get the bags." I told Nick and he nodded.
We made our way out of the car, being careful not to wake Tommy. The cold February air sent a chill down my spine and I adjusted the blanket in Tommy's carrier to make sure he wasn't cold. But out of the corner of my eye, I saw an unfamiliar car parked on the road. The driver's side door opened and he walked out. My anxiety shot up and I rolled my eyes. He jogged towards me with a cigarette in his hand.
"Dylan!" He yelled as he got closer.
"Shh! Tommy is sleeping." I urged him as he slowed down next to me.
"Sorry."
"Get that shit away from my son." I scolded him as I swatted away the cigarette smoke lingering towards my newborn.
"Oh shit, I'm sorry." He told me as he realized his harmful actions. He tossed it on the grass and stepped on it with his shoe. "He's our son, actually."
I looked at him bewildered. "That's a joke, right? You lost every right you had being his father when you told me you wanted nothing to do with us."
"Can you blame me? I was scared. I'm too young to be a dad. But I'm ready now."
"You think I wasn't scared? Jesus, Greyson. I'm nineteen. I'm a sophomore in college. I had to leave my dorm and move back home. I'm gonna miss everything fun about college." I retorted.
"I'm twenty years old. I never went to college. I work in my grandfather's shop. I barely make enough to pay rent. So yeah, I thought you were better off without me. But I'm ready now. I want to be Tommy's dad." Greyson told me.
"Tommy already has a dad." I told him as Nick walked over to my side with my duffel bags on his shoulders.
Greyson looked him up and down as Nick kissed the top of my head.
"I'm sure you're a cool dude, but I'm Tommy's real dad. He needs me."
"Tommy doesn't need someone who comes and goes when he pleases." I told him. "Let's go inside, babe." I tell Nick and he nods.
We started walking towards the house when Greyson started following us.
"I'm not going to leave. I'm here to stay. I want to be in Tommy's life. He's my son."
I roll my eyes as I open the door. "Leave us alone, Greyson."
I place Tommy's carrier on the floor a few feet from the door and start taking off my jacket. To my dismay, Greyson followed us inside and closed the door behind him.
"I'm serious, Dylan. I'm not going anywhere. Tommy is my son and I have rights.
"The hell you do. You left me pregnant and alone. If I didn't have Nick I don't know what I would've done." I hand my jacket to Nick who hangs it up on the coat hanger on the wall next to the door.
"I'm trying to be nice here, Dylan. But if you won't let me be in Tommy's life, I'm going to the court and using my legal rights to see him."
My heart dropped to my stomach as Greyson stood there staring at me, waiting for my response. The absolute audacity this man has to say that to me. I could scream.
"Get the fuck out of my house you bastard." I told him in a low voice.
"Dylan-"
"Get THE FUCK out of my house!" I yelled, startling Greyson.
"You heard her. Leave." Nick jumped in when Greyson didn't leave.
He looked between the two of us with a serious expression before he turned around and walked out, slamming the door behind him.
Tommy started wailing from the sudden sound and I collapsed to the ground, drowning in my overwhelming feelings. Nick rushed to my side to console me as I started crying.
