Chapter 1
My body jolts awake as I claw at my throat for air. I break out into a cold sweat. Where am I?! Where is... I reach across the bed, feeling for the warm, pale hand of my husband. Oh, right. He's not here yet.
I stare blankly at the ceiling, my face a stone. Unmoving, and breathing heavily as I willed my mind to calm. My chest slowed, my mind drifting back into sleep, back to him.
A beach. The air is warm and the waves drift quietly onto the sand. The sun sinks down onto the horizon, basking the area in purples and reds. To my left, a large mansion overlooks the ocean. Proud and noble, yet peaceful and inviting. To my right, bottles of wine and crystal glasses lay on a table nearby, the chairs have been knocked over by the waves. The food had been good, and the view was incredible.
Straight ahead, there he was. A woven hammock hung between two lazy palm trees, his pale, slender legs dangling just over the edge. He called me, without ever speaking a word. His eyes, warm, yet dark and mysterious, turning even more red in the dying light of the sun. The closer I get, the more I see. In that moment I realize that he wears absolutely nothing, his cream colored skin covered only by a large pillow. My breath hitches, my heart pounds into my ears. He reaches out, his small hand beckoning me closer. I too, reach out, craving for our fingers to touch. Then, without warning, I awaken yet again.
In frustration, I rip myself away from my bed. The dream still seethes within my mind. Soon, very soon, I won't have to dream.
Working my way down to the kitchen was a chore, and it didn't help to have maids stopping me every 5 feet. I want food. I need to eat, to think. I take a seat at the large, emaculate table in the dining hall, ordering a maid to bring me some water. My chest hurts, my head aches, and this room is particularly lonely. The maid rushes in, water in hand, as another scampers up behind her with my meal. As sweet as it smells, the taste is bland. Although, I don't understand why I'm even surprised anymore.
Once I finish I head to my office, readying myself for the day's work of ordering around my legions. Hours upon hours of meaningless paperwork and phone calls, and visits from my commanding officers would take up most of my day. Nothing new, nothing special. Until, that is, a young scout came into my office, bearing news that would bring me great joy.
