Unlocked
I woke with my arms sprawled above my head and my legs bent beneath me on the floor. They were numb. My head ached. Slowly, I lifted my weak body up off the ground and steadied myself. I banged my fists against the wall, against the floor, the bed and the ceiling. Anything I could find. But nothing happened. The walls didn't magically open, and nobody heard my racket. In utter frustration, I sank to the ground, sobbing.
Once my eyes felt dried of all their tears, I decided to accept my position and simply wait this out. I couldn't be here forever... could I? I sent up a silent prayer. 'Im scared. Please don't let this last.'
After what seemed like an eternity of gnawing hunger, aching headaches and endless waiting, I heard a loud, scraping sound coming from the wall. There was a large slot opening up in the seemingly impenetrable white. All of a sudden, a silver tray appeared, heaping with food.
At first, my reaction was a rather stupid one, ill admit. I sat there. Yup that's right. I sat there with my mouth open and my eyes bulging.
Then, slowly, I stood up and inched towards the tray, almost afraid it might be some sort of trap. My trembling hands reached forward for the platter, grasped it, and pulled it towards my chest. I brought it over to the bed with me and set it on my lap. The metal tray was filled with stale biscuits and dried out carrot sticks. In the corner was a tall glass of milk.
I knew it was risky to eat anything on it, since I didn't know where it even came from or if it was poisoned or even sanitary, but my growling stomach drowned out the doubts in my head and I gnawed viciously on a biscuit .
It wasn't good. I could tell the food was old, but it satisfied a primal need and provided some small stimulation to my taste buds. It was the milk that truly worked wonders for my spirits. It was cool, refreshing, and creamy. When the last drop awakened my mouth, my only regret was that I had only received one glass.
My situation hadn't exactly improved dramatically, but at least now I knew someone had to be out there.
Suddenly, I heard a clang and a snap, like the sound of a lock unlocking, and another long scraping sound. I quickly turned my head to catch the last glimpse of the wall opening up in front of me, revealing a long metal hallway outside the boundaries of my room. An echo reverberated down the halls as I gaped, uncertain of what I should do. Did the wall open as a trap? Or was I SUPPOSED to explore? Was there even anyone here? And what did they want? Why so mysterious? Ughhhhh so many questions and no answers to balance the scale.
After a few minutes, I decided that if I was ever going to find my way out of here, my best bet was to brave the rest of the building in search of an escape. Setting my tray aside and standing on shaky legs, I squared my shoulders and took the first step out of my white walls.
