An Awesome Game
It was another typical day as usual — with what seemed like hours of waiting around. Jacob Bertrand and Peyton List soon noticed a young boy with blond hair sitting at a table with a laptop in front of him.
They walked over, and saw he was playing the game titled "Mortifying Monday" in the School section of It's My Life, which was from the old version of the PBS Kids website on Mozilla Firefox.
One embarrassing moment is bad enough, but what if you had one day FILLED with them? Try to make it to the end of this Mortifying Monday and without dying of shame...or going completely crazy!
You're having that great dream again, the one where you're the singer in the world's most famous band, with thousands of crazy fans screaming out your name. Suddenly, you wake up and realize that somebody really is screaming your name: your MOM. "Get out of bed!" she yells. "My alarm clock broke, and you're going to be late for school!"
Uh oh. It's gonna be one of those Mondays.
Jacob grinned. "Ooh, little brother, looks like this game is too good for you to pass up."
His little brother turned and gave Peyton and Jacob a sheepish smile. "I couldn't help it. It sounded neat, so I had to give it a try."
Peyton smiled. "I'm sure you'll do great at it. And speaking of mortifying Mondays, or even Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Thursdays or Fridays, we all have those. Even Jacob and I have our embarrassing moments from time to time too."
Jacob's little brother was silent for a moment, turning Peyton's words over in his head, and then nodded. Peyton obviously had a point there.
They then turned back to the game.
Do you:
Hop right out of bed
Or:
Get ten more minutes of sleep?
"Go for the first one," Jacob suggested, grinning.
Peyton also agreed. "Yes. The first choice here is a good one."
Also thinking this was a good deal, the young boy clicked on the first choice. It led to this:
You can't be late for school again, so you jump out of bed. The bus will be at the corner in only five minutes, so you don't have time for both a shower and breakfast. You feel kind of yucky, so a shower would be nice...but your stomach is making all sorts of "I want food!" noises.
"Ooh, this is a tough one," remarked Jacob's little brother.
Do you:
Satisfy your need to be clean
Or
Give your stomach a nice balanced breakfast?
Jacob tilted his head in thought. "Hmm... I'd suggest going for the first one, since personal hygiene is quite important."
Peyton nodded. "Yes, indeed." She then bent to the young boy's ear. "The first choice is a good one."
As they both had a point, Jacob's little brother then clicked on the first one, and came to this one:
You step into the shower...and get hit with a blast of icy cold water. Your older brother has used up all the hot water again!
Brrrr...you're shivering and shaking under the freezing water, promising yourself that you'll find some way to get back at your brother. With no time to dry your hair, you get dressed, grab your book bag, and race out the door to the bus stop.
As you get to the corner, you look up and see that the school bus is already leaving. You wave and yell, but the bus driver doesn't see you. How can you get to school on time now?
Do you:
Chase after the bus and try to get to the next bus stop in time
Or
Head back home and ask your mom to give you a ride to school?
After Jacob's little brother chose "chase after the bus" Jacob and Peyton exchanged grins before suggesting for him to go for the first choice almost every time. The only time they suggested the second choice was when they came to this:
First period is your favorite class, so Monday's got to get better now. There's a pop quiz (uh oh!) but the teacher says you can use your textbook to find the answer (phew!).
But when you look in your bag for the book, it's gone! It must have fallen out in the hallway, and there's no way you can pass this quiz without it!
Do you:
See if there's an extra textbook you can use
Or
Ask for a hall pass and go search for your textbook?
After picking the second choice (which meant running into the Principal and trying to explain about finding the lost textbook, only to end up getting taken back to class and scolded because the teacher thought they were trying to get out of taking a quiz), they soon came to gym class and the basketball game:
It's time for gym class, and you can only hope that this terrible Monday will start to get better. Things are looking good when you get picked early for basketball. Late in the game, the score is tied, and you find yourself under the basket, holding the ball. All the kids on your team are yelling at you to make the easy shot and win the game. The pressure is really on, and everyone's looking right at you!
Do you:
Take the shot
Or
Pass the ball to someone else?
Peyton and Jacob exchanged a knowing glance: no matter the choice, it'd end up embarrassing anyway.
"Take the shot," suggested Jacob.
Peyton shook her head. "No, I'd go with passing the ball to a teammate."
Jacob's younger brother tapped his chin, thinking it over for a moment. (That was one good thing he liked about the "Mortifying Monday" game. There was no timer, so he didn't have to rush in making his choice.) Take the shot, or pass the ball to a teammate? This was a tough decision.
Finally he made up his mind. Jacob initially grinned as he read the following:
You have a chance to be the hero here...besides, you could use a great moment right about now. You hurl the ball at the basket. It hits the backboard, then the rim, and then bounces back and hits you right in the face! As you lie on the floor holding your bruised nose, the other team quickly steals the ball and runs down the court to win the game. Some of your teammates start calling you "spazzface".
Jacob narrowed his eyes at reading the last line. "'Spazzface'?" That's not a nice to call someone," he remarked sagely.
Peyton nodded, knowing exactly what Jacob was talking about. It reminded him of all those times he'd been bullied as a kid. So, as his way of portraying the bully version of Hawk, he'd draw on those experiences of being bullied in order to bring Hawk's dark side to life.
If only those who bullied me as a kid could see Hawk hunting them down in return as his way of getting back at them for how they treated me..
Blinking a little as he mentally pulled himself back to reality, Jacob then watched as his little brother clicked on the "Next" button, which came to this:
For the rest of the day at school, everyone's laughing and whispering about the things that happened to you. Maybe tomorrow you'll look back on it and find it all pretty funny, too.
A nice dinner at home makes you feel better, but because your brother is out at a late soccer practice, you have to pick up his turn to do the dishes. Aargh!
When he gets home, he runs upstairs, jumps in the shower...and screams at the top of his lungs! Looks like doing the dishes used up all the hot water! You've gotten revenge on him just like you promised, and now it's your turn to laugh.
Maybe this "Mortifying Monday" wasn't so bad after all...
A smile slowly spread across Jacob's face as he turned to his little brother. "Good job, little bro!" he said as he and his younger sibling exchanged high fives.
Peyton also grinned, and returned the high five with Jacob's little brother as well.
