6- Tell Me About It

Let's not forget to click ⭐️

Laura sat in the Tasty's coffee shop looking out the window and then her watch for the seventh time in ten minutes. She and Rhonda had a lunch date which was a normal thing for them since forever. They always tried to make time every week when ever they had time but lately she had been avoiding it and she couldn't anymore.

She already made up my mind that if Rhonda wasn't here in the next five minutes she will take her leave. Immediately five minutes passed, Laura picked her jacket and just like the movies, Rhonda walked in like a queen. With her gun on her waist and some sunshades obviously for the swag.

"You're late." Laura stated as she took her seat.

"I'm sorry. Had to round up a case." Rhonda dragged the seat opposite Laura and sat down. Then Rhonda raised her hands signaling the waitress. After that she pulled her glasses and dropped them on the table.

"How are you doing today Detective Sanders?"

"As good as a homocide detective can be." She smiled at Winnie the waitress.

Winnie was a woman in her mid forties that still taught she was a sixteen year old queen bee. Her blond hair styled in a ponytail with a pink ribbon and her mini skirts was enough to tell anyone that she was still living in a time of her life that she didn't want to let go. From what she said she was the prom queen which was obviously the highlight of her life. Other than that she was a jovial and nice person.

"Your usual?" She asked.

"Yes."

"And you Laury?" She said calling Laura that hideous nickname.

"The same too."

"Okay. Just give us five minutes." And she left to the kitchen.

"Care telling me why you let this princess wait for hours?" Laura playfully said.

Rhonda rolled her eyes. "Please stop being dramatic. I was fourteen minutes forty-seven seconds late."

"You knowing the exact time is enough reason for me to stop being friends with you. You're just a weirdo."

"That's why we are besties. Birds of the same feathers flock together."

Laura chuckled and rolled her eyes. "So any news?" She said changing the topic.

"News about what? My job or my nonexistent love life."

"Both."

"Sorry don't have any interesting thing happening to me now. The Aria Jordan case is just a headache. We can't still find any motive. No motive, no weapon equals to no crime." Rhonda was the lead detective in the Aria Jordan murder case.

"Yeah tell me about it." She murmured. Just then Winnie walked in with our orders.

"One iced cappuccino and cashew nut cookies for you." She said placing it in front of Rhonda. "And one vanilla latte and chocolate shortbread for you."

"Thanks." Laura smiled at her.

"Anything for the three musketeers. Speaking of which I don't see him here. Girl time I guess?" The three musketeers was a name they earned in college as they were inseparable.

Laura smiled at her and nodded. One thing she hated about her was how nosey she was.

"Then I'll leave you guys to gossip and do whatever." And she carried her tray and walked off.

When she was out of earshot Laura sighed. "Doesn't she know the meaning of the word boundaries or if that is to complicated for her, privacy is simple."

Rhonda laughed. "Winnie is just being Winnie. And she is not the only one curious about Nat."

She sighed due to frustration. "Not you too. I've almost lost my mind with the people in my office ask me about it, I'm not sure my brain can survive it again."

"I'm just curious. And worried."

"Why are you worried?"

"You've loved Nathan since we were teenagers. You guys always fought but this is the first time I've seen you so calm about it. It's like it never even happened. It makes me wonder if you are okay." She said looking very concerned.

"Of course I'm okay. I'm just tried of fighting and feel like I have reached my limit."

"You can't just break up with him Laura. You guys have known each other for over ten years. You just don't throw that away."

"I can and I have." She said almost angry at her. "Do you know what it means to be in a relationship were you are constantly unsure of yourself. Do I deserve him? Are we going to work? Does he really love me? All those crazy questions run through your head every second. I can't deal with it again. I can't deal with someone who doesn't give a shit about my feelings."

"You know he cares about your feelings. Is this about the baby?" Her tone like she was talking to a toddler.

"It's not just about the baby. I've been going through all this for long. The baby was just the last straw." She sipped her latte in a rush forgetting it was hot making her to cringe.

"So what happened?"

Laura turned her face to the window watching the cars and people that passed the street. She didn't want to talk about it. "I don't want to talk about it."

"Keeping it in won't help you."

"This feels like a trip to a therapist office. Tell me, have you been taking online classes I don't know of?"

They both laughed. "I'm serious Laura."

Laura sighed. She just doesn't know when to give up. "There is no letting me out of this one is there? Fine you win." She tucked her hair behind her ears. "It's just that everything has felt different for a long time now. He is just not here. He is obviously hiding something from me."

"What may that be? Don't tell me you think he's having an affair?" She said with a look in her eyes that Laura translated to disbelief.

"No! Far from it."

"So then what?"

"It's the Devina's case."

"Jesus! Not this again. I thought you let it go already."

Laura was surprised by her statement. Was she serious? "You let go when you go to Starbucks and order for a cheese sandwich and they tell you it's finished. You let go when you want to go to a Beyoncé concert and you find out it's on a work day. You don't let go when someone was murdered. Especially someone who you cared about."

"I know what it meant to you but sometimes you can't solve anything. He may be going at it the wrong way but he is just trying to protect you."

"To hell with that. I don't need it."

"Everybody needs a protector sometimes. Even the strongest of us." Rhonda picked her drink and took a long sip before she spoke again. "And?"

Laura raised my brow at her confused. "And what?"

"That's not all. There is something else."

"Wait?! Are you really taking those classes because I was joking at first but now it seems possible."

"I know you Laura. And I know something else is bothering you all else you wouldn't have been stirring your latte for the hundredth time. Something I'm sure is cold by now."

"Fine Dr Phil." Laura pushed the latte aside. "I love Nat. Really even as I don't think I should be with him anymore I still love him but it's not the same. I mean we have been together for so long we are literally like a married couple. We dated for nine years! Nine fucking long years. And not even once did he ask me to marry him. Sometimes I even had to ask him upfront and he just gave me lines like, 'We'll always be together.' Or 'You're the mother of my children and my only love." I was so blinded that I didn't notice he never called me his wife or anything. I know everyone will think I'm rash and will tell me to be patient. But there's a limit to what a woman can take. Sometimes it makes me question myself. Maybe it's my fault? Or maybe I have a problem? But I'm done. For my sanity sake I need to leave this relationship." She felt a huge weight leave her chest. Laura had carried it inside her for so long. It was time to share it with someone else.

"I'm sorry Laura. I never knew you were hurt like this. It makes me feel like a horrible person for not noticing it at all."

"I've been doing a good job living with it." Laura shrugged it off like it was nothing as she took a sip from her drink.

"But I have to be sincere with you. Nathan loves you. He has since we were in college. You guys losing your baby did a toll on him. Maybe that's why he couldn't stay. Seeing you like that without him being able to help you may have made him feel useless."

"I don't care how it made him feel. Did he care how I felt? I lost our baby and was admitted to the hospital. Only for me to get discharged and Nathan was nowhere to be found. All I got was a voice note. A fucking voice note!"

There was silence for a few seconds. Then she broke it. "I'm sorry Laura. I'm really sorry."

"No it's not your fault."

"I wish I wasn't so useless. I was supposed to be your bestie. I know you didn't tell me most of this because you felt I wouldn't understand. I'm sorry. I was so caught up in you guys having a happy ending that I forgot you have to be happy to achieve that. Please forgive me."

"No you are far from useless. You were one of my greatest strength in this period. And you always say what you feel like is the truth. Not what I want to hear, so don't blame yourself."

Saying that made her smile. "Thank you."

Laura smiled. "So enough of this emotional crap. I need some drama and action."

Immediately her phone rang. "Excuse me." She picked the call. "Detective Sanders speaking." She was silent after that just nodding her head as she processed what the person on the line was saying. After a few minutes she hang up and had a look on her face that Laura couldn't  decipher.

"What?" Laura asked curious about what she just heard.

"Looks like your prayers have been answered."

"Which of them?" Laura said.

"Winnie!" She called out.

"Yes Detective." She said appearing only a few seconds later.

"Can you please change the channel to the news. I'm sure your other customers wouldn't mind."

"Of course." She said as she quickly went to change the channel.

"-And the police have currently taken him in custody. Steve Jones who pleaded not guilty in the last trial may have a change of mind. For the murder weapon was found in his apartment after an anonymous call was made to the police. We are-"

"We need to get out of here."
